I read a lovely rejection letter from Pomona yesterday, but I’ve accepted it for what it is and have moved on to considering other schools. However, I am wondering about something else.

First, some background stats:

ACT: 31
GPA: 3.73
Rank: upper 20%

I understand that my stats were not strong enough, but the fact that I was deferred after applying ED gave me hope. After I was deferred, I sent a letter expressing my continued interest, and also a little something extra. I am wondering if this something extra was what got me rejected?

I created this comic using photoshop in about two weeks. I worked really hard on it, and was hoping that it would show my enthusiasm and help explain one of my interests (art and comics). I showed it to my friends, family, teachers, and they all seemed to really like it, so I didn’t really worry about sending it in. However, after I got rejected I felt a little embarassed for going through all that effort to make something they probably threw out the window. My mom thinks that they didn’t even look at it, since it sounds like the admissions office was a little disorganized this year. Who knows? Haha.

Just wanted to share with all of you my little comic. And any thoughts on the whole situation? Thanks. :)

Catsushi – You can’t ultimately know why Pomona picked one student and not another. I’m sure they looked at your cartoons. My understanding is that they are quite thorough. If you were in the pool, I’m sure they looked.

I suspect the problem had more to do with your academics not being as strong as other students in the pool. Pomona is wildly competitive. It’s very hard for the admissions office to overlook the extremely strong candidates with stellar scores and great GPAs.

Good luck. I’m sure you’ll bless whichever college community you end up at. Your contribution to this board has certainly been appreciated.

Hey! Those comics are really cool - a lot better than I could do! I’m sure the only reason why you were deferred was because of you rank… I think most colleges expect their students to be in the top 10% or at the very bare minimum top 25%.

aww man catsushi i was totally rooting for you to get in! well maybe it was for the best i’m sure you got into some great schools. i don’t know, but i read this college admissions book full of essays, and this girl a few years ago submitted a comic as her essay in her pomona application, maybe they thought you were being unoriginal? but yeah it’s still an awesome comic.

catsushi,
I don’t think the comic got you rejected. You really did your research on the school, eh? Grades and test scores were just on the low side for a very competitive year. Where are you going to college?

I wish I could fix that, but by the time I realized the mistake it was too late to replace the image link.

Thanks for your nice comments, everyone. I think I am deciding between three schools: Whitman, Wellesley, and Scripps. I am leaning towards Wellesley so far, but shall be visiting all three to make sure.

aww catsushi i got rejected too it’s all good… i loved the comic though!!!
and wellesley is a sickkkkkkkk school i know a couple people there and they LOVE it, you can’t go wrong with any of those choices

The comic was adorable; it’s Pomona’s loss. No doubt you will do well with at any of your acceptances - you’ve got some great choices. Good luck!

Don’t worry about your name being there; admissions decisions are done! You were a lot of fun on the Wellesley board and, I too, was rooting for you to get into Pomona. Those comics are outstanding!
I wish we were going to be classmates (I chose to go to Bryn Mawr because ) but I wish you success wherever you go!

hey catsushi. I just wanted to let you know that i thought your comic was great. I definitely dont think that was the reason for your rejection. My friend who is asian applied to Rice university and in the “place an optional picture” box, she put an anime drawing and she was accepted. So, i mean, just because you did some drawing doesnt mean that it rubbed them off the wrong way. Perhaps it just wasnt meant to be, you know? You will be better off without them. Life is funny sometimes and, if you wait it out, you will see that things will eventually go your way, because, in the end, it always does. I was rooting for you, and I am really sorry it didnt work out. Good luck in your school choice.

I am going to be visiting my top three colleges soon so I can make the final decision. I’m so excited!

Congrats on making your final decision, froghorn! It’s a shame that we may not be classmates, but I also wish you much luck at Bryn Mawr. Donjuan, Wellesley is ranked number 4 for being the best liberal arts college and Pomona is ranked number 5, according to US News. Other than that, both colleges seem to be equally strong. And that’s so cool that your friend made a cartoon of herself, haha. I just sent my senior photo, hoping that maybe they’d see my pale skin as proof of my Russian-ness (just kidding). :P
