Saw Tom Brokaw offer to buy Matt a pair of socks following his segment on Today! Probably a commentary from a member of the older generation, but think I agree with him. Matt’s bare ankles during the Olympic coverage surprised me.

Are there rules about going sockless that we should know about??

Cute, I don’t know about rules but my H and his friends rarely wear socks in the summer no matter what shoes they have on or what pants or shorts they are wearing and believe me they aren’t wearing “no show” socks.

Crossposted, but yes, this isn’t a "new’ trend…those guys have never worn socks with shoes in the summer.

My son had these weird socks on the other day (they looked like peds) and I asked him what they were and he told me they were loafer socks. So I am going to assume that Matt was wearing them.

Nope. Nothing new. The guys in my family have never worn socks in warm weather. DH will wear socks with oxfords on certain days because that is the expected norm at work, otherwise no socks.

Loafer socks are something fairly new for people who want the look that has become trendy recently but think it’s uncomfortable otherwise. The fact is, it’s only new for a certain segment. For lots of people this is nothing new, and they’ve never worn loafer socks.

I know, going sock-less isn’t new (I went to prep school in the early 70’s and none of the boys wore socks) and that loafer socks are new, but since TV personalities have stylists they are up the newest things.

The newest things? I have seen men doing the sockless look for at least a decade here in Atlanta, and I’m pretty sure we are not trend setters here!

Sorry, I was just going of the OP. I’m sorry, but guys or girls wearing loafer type socks is a kind of “old people” thing. It’s kinda like the gateway thing to wearing black socks with shorts!

S wears socks with athletic shoes (white with a little showing) and dress shoes (matches the color of pants) and he wears no socks with other shoes, Sperry, Reef, etc. D would ridicule him if he showed up with that black sock look, YouDon’tSay. H asked me why there is such a fuss over Matt Lauer… I don’t have an answer.

I’ve found this to be a slightly regional thing. I remember my boss who had lived all his life in California went to a meeting on the East Coast in loafers, no socks. They let him know that he needed to go get some socks before they all went out to dinner. He was shocked. It seems to me that it is a prep/summer look to go with the topsiders and no socks in the East. In CA you see it year round…perhaps Matt was going for the summer/casual look.

DS2 (17 years old) thinks its a socio-economic thing. Says for “old guys” it indicates the guy is “rich” or “preppie”!! Different perspective, to say the least. Agree it may be a regional thing…

I’m inclined to agree that men who are dressed in a suit, need to find a pair of socks!
I’m trying to picture having confidence in an attorney or financial adviser or business man who had visibly bare ankles, ala Matt Lauer. Maybe. Maybe not.

GA2012MOM, would the men in Atlanta go to work in the business world without socks?

I’m not quite sure why “visibly bare” ankles bother people when the ladies have been shunning summer hose for decades also. I see alot of leg in the office without hose and don’t give it a thought. Why would it bother you to see a man’s ankle :-)
