Just a brief background, I screwed up in hs, and chose the wrong college for the wrong reasons. I left after a semester and took a few years to get my life in order and figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Figured it out, found schools that would meet my requirements. Spent some time meeting all of the requirements for the majors. Was an A student and finally happy with myself. Go to transfer and get rejected by all but one school, but didn’t get into my major of choice, now I’m a junior, no other majors even interest me. My luck after I transferred in they completely overhauled the admissions to this one program to make it impossible for me to get in. The only reason I applied to the schools I applied to was because they had great reputations, especially what I wanted to study. They have excellent undergrad programs and amazing alumni networks/job placements, and opportunities only open to students in that program. Now I’m stuck, I’ve lost motivation and the A student has turned into C- student.
Is your major really that important?
What was the major? It will be easier for us to help you if you tell us what the major is, and why you chose it. What interests you about this major?
It’s a combination of the major and the school. I could have gone to a low tier state school and gotten into that program no problem. But I know plenty of people who have gone that route, done well, and have either had no job in that field or literally had to start their own business to get a job remotely related. It’s more about what this program at this school could have offered me. Coupled with the fact I have no idea why I did not get in, it’s just paralyzing me mentally
There might be someone on these boards who could help you find a similar school and/or a similar major, but you need to tell us what you were looking for (and accept the fact that it’s time to look for plan B).
Also, you need to keep your grades up!!! If you plan to transfer to find a better situation, you will need a good academic record. Withdraw and take a gap semester or two to regroup and make new plans if you need to, but don’t take a bunch of classes and barely pass them.
You’re going to have to move on. You didn’t get into the major, and if what you said is true then it’s going to be very difficult for you to get admitted to that major anyway. So it’s time, as AroundHere said, for you to think of a Plan B.
There are a couple of different approaches you can take. You can stay at your current college and pick a different major. That’s probably the easiest way to do this, and there may be other majors that are pretty similar to the one you wanted.
You could try to transfer to another college to go to the same major you wanted at the current one. But as you have realized, going to a college solely or even primarily because of its reputation in a single major is a risky proposition.
Or, if you dislike your current college, you could transfer to another one that appeals to you holistically and choose a major there that fits you.
However, we can’t really give you sound advice unless you tell us what the major is (and maybe even what school it is) and what you’re looking for.
Trust me, if moving on was easy I’d do it. The reason I screwed up in high school was because I was put in a bad position by guardians that were supposed to help me. This was my way of proving to myself that I was right (90%) and they were wrong (10%). Plan B was 20 plans ago. it really doesn’t matter what the major was. I know there are others that are a similar path. They just don’t excite me or motivate me. I honestly didn’t expect any one to respond, to be honest this was more just me venting to the void.
We can help if you indicate the major and the college.
As of now, I see two possibilities : IB and acting. As for the college, it could be Bard or IU… But really many others that select along the way (Purdue engineering, Penn State finance…)
Of course it matters what and where. Because strategies will be different : at some places provided can reapply. At others you can apply through the system in place when you entered college. At others still they lifted the GPA requirement but also created similar majors that are easier to access.
Due to the '20 years ago’it also sounds like you’re a non traditional student (are you 38-40?) and there may be an office at our university dedicated to helping you.
You need a Plan C then.
In the meanwhile you need to keep your grades up because all ‘outs’ include a good GPA. Don’t ruin your A 's because our feel depressed now. Take a lighter academic load and time to regroup.
What was your GPA?
Did you complete the pre-reqs defined at the time you entered the college?
20 plans, not 20 years. But I am 25 so technically a non traditional student, as pointed out by the advisor I was assigned who told me to get a general studies degree or drop out. I spent two years getting gen eds and pre reqs out of the way. They only really work towards one other degree, and it’s one that I don’t like, or get any enjoyment out of.
Are you at a CC?
Nope, transferred out with a 3.7ish
Are you missing some classes for your major?
Are you allowed to reapply to the major (typically, you can apply when you have between … and … credits)
No I was not missing classes.
technically yes I can reapply, but the gpa requirement is such that it would take several years of getting a 4.0 gpa to get my grades to the minimum required to even apply. During the application process I discussed with an admissions counselor at my current school, and the advisor at my cc who was in charge of making sure students who wanted to transfer were prepared. Both said I would have no problem. The counselor at the school I transferred into even said as long as I had a 3.4 is get in (minimum to apply is 3.3.
And for the record they are both public institutions in the same state, the cc is a feeder school to the university, so it’s not like the courses were radically different
If you have a 3.7 you should be fine - what caused the problem?
This is what I don’t know, and why I’m stuck.
If I had been missing classes or even was at a 3.3 I could understand, but I had the courses AND cleared the minimum gpa by a comfortable margin
Perhaps they made a mistake? Those sometimes happen. Go talk to someone - adviser, registrar, dean…
Is the major impacted or a “first come first served” situation? If so, reapply next semester, as early as possible.
I talked with my advisor, she didn’t know why. Got a new advisor (after first one suggested I drop out or get a general studies degree) he is too new, doesn’t know who to talk to. I tried several times getting in touch with this programs in house admissions team, was directed to general undergrad admissions who won’t discuss why decisions were made. Also it’s been over a year, my grades have fallen off a cliff, I feel like I don’t have a viable chance of appealing even if I found out the reason was an error, even though that possible mistake was the cause of my poor performance.
