Eddie - exactly - and chances are, if you get in a good routine, you’ll keep those 50 pounds off!

"We will carry water and go out 5/back 5 (get cold drinks) and then out 3/back 3 in the other direction. Tough course with the first 10 the worst of it. "

Very smart decision, MOfWC. This is pretty much I handled my long runs this summer - get done with the longer part first (max 7.5 miles out/7.5 miles back), get a minute rest, and then run the leftover portion, whatever it was. Seem to have worked out OK, I’m still in one piece. Good luck to you both!

Good luck to everyone who is racing this (long) weekend!

tom - my belated congrats. Amazing number!

Yay, eddieodessa! Getting started is the hard part. I’d rather be down a pound than up a pound!

I found that trying to wrap my arms around 50 pounds was too much to think about. So I just focused on trying to lose 5 pounds. When I stood in the grocery aisle eyeing the Pringles, I could convince myself to wait and I’d buy them after I lost five pounds…

It made the goals feel more achievable…

That’s good! Whenever I get hip pain, I can never really tell where the heck it is coming from…

This is my favorite hip stretch/warmup. Being on the elbows locks the rest of the body out so it easy to really focus on the hip:

I think I hurt myself doing something like this one:

The foot up on the weight bench puts a crazy stretch on the front of the hip.

I’m hoping this is where this exciting activity was discussed, but for anyone looking for a fun activity in the D.C. area this September…courtesy of my dear D:

LOL, sabaray! Good one! As of 2:40 pm pacific time, 19 have been purchased. Wow! Some folks apparently would not have second thoughts about shelling out $39 for a gag gift. :)

I’m feeling a group workout session for all the DEHW participants. Wouldn’t that be wild! We could all wear our light up accessories.

Nice weight loss, Tom!

Still can’t do much, but my ankle is on the mend. Good news is–no weight gain. Hoping I can get back to workouts in the next two weeks.

Thanks everyone.

idad- I think I am going to try the kettle bell swing/burpees on Monday. I think I will try it a little scaled back for now. I am an incrementalist (made up word) with exercise. I always take it easy the first time around and add reps/sets or minutes/speed as I go along. Since I am consistent with the number of days I work out it does not take that long to be at a point where I am really working hard.

“We could all wear our light up accessories.”

I can’t stop ROFLing after trying to picture all of us showing up for the class glowing like Hanford at night!

Bromfield: keeping my fingers crossed for your ankle.

Smart move. The first couple of times I did the KB swings and burpees, I did 10 minute rounds. Literally left me feeling like I was going to puke. That’s when I cut back to 6 minute rounds with a rest between sets.

I think I started out with four burpees and 10 swings and built it up over time to 6 and 12.

Thank you. I think I will try that.

groan

Rest day for me. I guess you could say I got in walking as errands took me to a couple of malls. Nice to see the sun shining again. :)

If so, the joke may turn out to be on them. I’d not be at all surprised if she can outlast many of the participants who come for a workout.

3 mile run. So humid! Hear it will break on Monday and be much cooler. Went to the running store and got a new pair of shoes!

What kind of shoes, deb?

Yes, the running fashionistas want to know!

I got myself a pair of Hokas. They are so ugly they are beautiful!

Thanks, abasket. I used to use myfitnesspal but I got annoyed because it kept requiring me to log in, and I was afraid that I would inadvertently post something somewhere. But it would be fun to have a simple way to communicate with D about running, so I will check it out.

Bunsen- I can’t wait to hear how you like the Hokas. I think they are miraculous in terms of saving your legs. They are definitely hideous. The pair I’m wearing today for the 16 are orange and white. Clown shoes, for sure.

Kudos to Eddie. I actually thing low and slow is a great way to go. A pound a week was my original plan, (but then originally for 30, not 50) but I lost more than I aimed for in the first little while, compliments of the hill, and then increased the goal, and spent a few months chasing the same few pounds around…so we’ll see where I’m at by New Years

Just try to make it a lifestyle you can picture continuing :)

In the theme of shoes that are so ugly they’re beautiful…knew a guy like that once who was the best dancer in the room on any given night :)
