Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Long, long travel day. The last 5+hour flight to Kona from SF was killer, but at least we were in an exit row. Oceanfront condo- rocky coast here. I’m sure it will be gorgeous in the light! Goodnight, all. Oh- ran 2 miles this morning before we left.

Enjoy Kona and sending wildchild the light for a safe but great race :)

Sabaray, do share about the eggs. I’ve been doing eggs for breakfast every day. Most times, I was getting the organic, free range brown ones, but mch picked up regular eggs so I’ve been using them this week. I thought it was my imagination, but when I beat them, they’re a different consistency, not nice and creamy like my brown/organic ones. They seem to stay more “separated” or something. I actually had to check the date because I wondered if they were on their last legs. So I’m curious about the egg differential now that I’m eating so many of them :)

In other news, I was able to simulate a single leg deadlift on each side last night without falling over. It wasn’t pretty, but it is getting better.

KMC, I don’t want to get too far off topic or gross people out, but I have a real problem with factory farming. I think your body can only be as healthy as the food you fuel it with - and factory raised food is not healthy. I think you’ve found that there is a substantial taste differential in organic v regular eggs, for starters. Commercial egg and poultry producers regularly feed their chickens antibiotics to prevent illness, not to cure it. You are eating those antibiotics. Commercial feed - you think those chickens are eating corn, grains, etc.? You would be shocked at what can be and is included in animal feed. Even if a vegetarian diet is mostly corn, soy and other grain products, I’d far rather my chickens eat that than some of the other options. It’s all about the bottom line for a commercial producer - and cost cutting directly impacts the quality of the food we are eating. Yep, I’m a nut.

MOWC, enjoy Kona! Best of luck to WildChild - I know he’s worked hard for this!

MOWC what day is the race/event for WC???

I have egg whites every morning for breakfast. I will look to see if I can find organic ones! Never really paid attention to this. Thanks for the info sabaray!

Good luck to WildChild! What an exciting time for all of you. Sending the good race karma his way!

Asked DH this morning if maybe he would like a personal trainer. (He is extremely exercise-averse, overweight, and in poor shape.) I thought maybe that would make it fun for him and the trainer could start at his level. I got a frown out of him.

He gets up early, reads the paper, visits web sites, drinks coffee, THEN goes to the office. I know he could fit in a tiny bit of exercise but he is not at all motivated. It’s all I can do to get him to walk with me in the evening but if I’m not home he doesn’t remember to walk. I wish his doctor would “prescribe” exercise the way he prescribes drugs for HBP, cholesterol, and diabetes. :(

He is younger than I am but I am in much better physical condition. Sorry for the rant.

Edit: Forgot to say good luck in the Kona race! Sounds beautiful!

Mommusic, your efforts with you H don’t hurt, but ultimately he has to be the one to decide to take a step towards wellness - and you never know what will be the magical day that something “clicks” and he decides to jump on the bandwagon.

I have been bugging my H for years to eat better. He has always had some degree of exercise - he’s a park ranger and does a lot of walking and tends to do a fair amount of outside work at home and at our cottage. But his eating habits - terrible! Something “clicked” for him last November - he says he was reaching for his 3rd helping of Thanksgiving stuffing when he realized “enough was enough” - he joined WW without telling the rest of the family and has continued to go to weekly meetings/weigh in. I would have NEVER guessed that this would be the route he would take - WW - but he did and he has since become much more educated. But it had to be on his dime/time. Not because I wanted him to - HE had to decide to take the steps.

I agree, abasket. This is the first time I’ve said anything in ages. He was traveling so much for almost 2 years that he really didn’t have the time to do anything organized, and when he was home he just wanted to veg. I just got the idea for the trainer, which would be expensive, but well worth it, I thought. Oh well.

The race is Saturday. ironman World Championships. His coach said he did something really stupid and ran 3 long runs on the treadmill in 6 days (16, 18, 14) after not being able to run since Vegas. He can run with Treadmill at a slight incline. I know he needed the confidence, but still… Hope this goes well. TSA broke his bike during the travel day, so we have to deal with that. Lots of mechanics here. This sport is a nightmare.

I’m about to go hook up the Bodylastics. Husband bought these for himself. He uses the more robust ones in the bag, and I’ve taken over the others. There’s also a pair of dbs sitting on his desk that get used. Swimming is great, but some days it’s easier to do a workout at home than go to the gym.

Ran 6.2 along Alii Drive, which is part of the marathon course. There were a lot of athletes out “jogging”. I felt like an old slug- you should have seen them blow by me. At least there were some other non-Ironmen out there. Spouses, coaches, sponsors etc. Dropped the kid and coach off at the swim course for a practice before I ran.

Bunsen will appreciate this- there is a limited edition Dooney Ironman purse for sale at the expo. I’m going to check it out.

Have fun MOWC. Are you going surfing while you’re there?

I think abasket has it right on the hubby fitness thing. There isn’t anything you can say or do that will get him going until he decides on his own. Diet, exercise, and fitness is hard enough to make a routine when you want to. Imagine if it were only because somebody was telling you to do?

On the flip side of that equation, one of the problems is that that so much of a what a guy thinks about diet and fitness is so stupid that it’s hard to get started, even if he wants to. Especially on the diet front. I would NEVER have lost weight if I had followed the standard diet advice. The deal I could live with was get rid of the junk food, but still cook and enjoy fantastic dinners with big portions and good stuff like steak and pork chops and homemade blue cheese salad dressing and veggies sauteed in butter, etc.

Diet is far more important than exercise and there are some subtle changes that will make a huge difference – stop drinking sugar, cut the pasta dinners, etc.

Re Hubbies-who-are-tubby…amen. Mch only goes along with the lower cal lifestyle at home because he’s “fed lean.” I do not, nor can I, actually directly influence him to get on the court, so to speak. So I just don’t fuss about it and hope the universe is kind to him anyway :)

In other news, I did two whole weight bearing single leg deadlifts. Just two, and a light kettle bell, but hey, it’s a start :)

MOWC - Enjoy Hawaii and I hope dear son has a fantastic, injury free run. I can’t remember if you are running also. If so, have fun.
KMC - Congrats on those leg lifts.

Oh my goodness, I weighed in at WW this morning and have lost a total of 16.2 pounds (7 weeks). I am starting to feel it in my clothes. Hubby has lost 16. I have been walking and playing basketball (shooting hoops with Odessagirl or Hubby). We are leaving for Canaan Valley, WV this morning. Our 25th year in a cabin. No TV, no phone. Huge stone fireplace. Deer everywhere. It’s my happy place. Was planning on hiking Seneca Rocks today, but it is raining here in MD and is 70% chance of rain at Canaan. We might just have to go to the exercise room in the lodge.
I figured out how many points for a some-more and will work it into my meal plan.
Have a fantastic weekend, everyone. I might not have much luck on the computer this weekend up in the mountains, but I will try to check in.

Congrats on the weight loss eddieo!!! Woohoo! That is awesome. Have fun on vacation! What a nice tradition. Enjoy the cabin and all the nature around you.

Excellent progress, Eddie. I BET you are feeling it!

No- I am not completing here at Ironman. I don’t do triathlons and this is the world championships. You have to qualify (there is a small lottery, too). Meeting a lot of celebrity triathletes here- winners of multiple Kona Ironman races. We’ve gone to some parties and receptions put on by various companies and groups. It’s intense. My son eats a lot. And frequently. We went to bed at 7:45 last night. The time zone is killing us. I woke up again at 3am.

What a cool environment and event to get to take part in MOWC. Living the dream - in Hawaii!!!

Eddie, that is FANTASTIC! You are so in the mode - you’re going to continue to have success. And yes, have that s’more - just work in to your daily intake! Your place sounds like a little piece of heaven and I am totally jealous right now!!!

Have a great vacation at the cabin, Eddie.

MOWC, soak up some sun for me. :)

MOfWC, good luck to your son! I keep fingers crossed for his race to be injury-free. Hope his bike problems were fixed. Grrrr… TSA luggage screeners, the herd of dummies!

How did you like the Ironman purse? Enjoy the sun and have lots of fun!

I may be completely wrong, but I swear some people on this thread were talking about Polar Heart Rate Monitors - just in case, I’ll post this offer I just saw in my Groupon email…
