Well- I have only felt not right since last night’s run, and I think it might have just been too hard for the warm gym. I’m not worried, but thanks. The treadmill (until I get more used to it again) is a Catch 22 for me. To be relaxed and comfortable, I have to go even slower than I run outside, and then it takes me longer and I’m bored. My comfortable pace on the treadmill is a good 30-45 seconds slower per mile than outside. I CAN run faster, but then I’m working harder than I should for an easy run, and right now ALL my runs should be easy (post-marathon). Going after work all I really have on the TV screens is news and ESPN, and neither were particularly thrilling last night.

News or ESPN probably would have been more exciting than my workout entertainment last evening. I plowed through some Patriots podcasts and got a series of Bill Belichick press conferences and radio interviews. Now that’s energetic! :)

I can’t watch ESPN, period, at all. Their shouting fool schtick and hiring of ex-jocks who can’t speak English has gotten so old that I literally can’t stand having it on. And TV news? Just shoot me now…

The other problem is that the treadmills are the back row of the cardio equipment and are pretty far from the TVs. You plug your earphones in to the treadmill and you can change the channels, but the TVs are still pretty far away. If it is a talking head, or close up, I’m fine, but I can’t, say, watch a basketball or football game. I can’t even see the score at the bottom of the screen. There are about 8 TVs, but some have the same channel on.

“To be relaxed and comfortable, I have to go even slower than I run outside, and then it takes me longer and I’m bored. My comfortable pace on the treadmill is a good 30-45 seconds slower per mile than outside”

Ditto here. Treadmill running does take some time to get used to. Maybe it was dehydration, MOfWC? Sometimes, my body gets dehydrated without feeling any thirst, especially after an hour on the treadmill.

Also significantly slower on the treadmill than running outside (at least races, no Garmin so I’m not sure what my pace is on regular outdoor runs). It sounds like you did some speed work on the treadmill this time, MOWC? That wipes me out more.

Home workout and ~ 3 1/3 mi low rolling hills run. Ducks, geese, and on the way back a woman retrieving a doggie who’d gone roaming out onto a very busy street.

Went to hot yoga today–slow flow class (90 minutes). I find this class difficult, but I always walk out of it feeling so much better than when I went into the class.

I’ll throw this out to help with treadmill boredom. I stopped watching TV at the gym and have been listening to podcasts of NPR’s This American Life. It’s a very entertaining and often informative radio show that I really enjoy. I find that listening to one of the podcasts allows me to negotiate the treadmill for an hour. I walk so, it takes me 15 minutes to walk a mile (unless I’m pushing myself). The podcasts really make the time go by quickly.

Yeah. I’ve got a local Boston-based NPR podcast on a variety of current affairs that I listen to quite regularly during workouts – although every few months, I do get NPR’d out. Fortunately, I get an extended break during football season. :)

I also have a backlog of diet and fitness podcasts that always seem appropriate for workouts!

Bunsen- I do think I may have gotten dehydrated. I think I sweat more than I realize on the treadmill. I was mainly wiping my face, but my clothes were pretty damp afterwards.

I think I found my treadmill- speaking of buying a car. These can be had inthe $5000 range without the fancy display. One of my young stud runner friends ran on one today at her PT (injury rehab) and said it has now ruined her for all other treadmills. Someone else chimed in and agreed. I have never seen one. Anyone tried a Woodway? I won’t be buying one, but sure would like to try one out.

The Woodway treadmills are what Mike Boyle and similar athletic oriented training facilities tend to use.

They make a motorized model that will go up to 25 mph and a 35% incline:

In addition to their very heavy duty motorized treadmills, they make a unique manually powered treadmill. You run at whatever pace you like. No motors. This is the killer interval training treadmill:

MOWC: I think you are the best hope for a CC’er to get a Woodway and let us know how it is! :)

To the basement for me.

CORE:
Tabata planks and ValSlide Painful Pushaways

POWER:
Med ball slams and box jumps

STRENGTH:
KB Goblet squats (50lb), 3pt Row (50lb), Box steps (2 x 30lb), DB bench press (2 x 35 lb)

I’m doing ten rep sets of the strength exercises, so it’s challenging, but I’m seeing pretty significant improvement from the first couple of times I did this workout. Probably about time to think about kicking the weight up on a few of these.

I really want to try the Curve and the other one.

Here’s a gym in Nashville that advertises Woodway treadmills:

I would be shocked if D1 in Franklin doesn’t have some Woodways:

Vanderbilt athletic training facility might have them. They are very popular in pro and college sports training:

I’m the last one on earth to know about treadmills, but I’m not sure the Curve manual treamill is ideal for distance running. Seems to be more of an interval training treadmill. Definitely harder because you’ve got to supply the energy to keep it moving. Although, I guess you do when you are running outdoors!

D1 is very close to me. I’ll ask around. Thanks for the links. That Barry’s Boot Camp is in the hipster area.

They had a Woodway at the Furman FIRST clinic I attended. They used them when testing our VO2 Max and Lactate Threshold. Don’t remember much about running on it as they were ramping up the speed every 2 minutes and taking a blood sample at each interval for the lactate test. Pure agony. I think I heard that it cost 15 grand.

Elliptical for a half hour today followed by 8x133 intervals. LSD tomorrow.

I hope you have some Grateful Dead loaded up on the iPod for that… :)

^that could make the workout interesting ;)

A health club I belonged to had a couple of them.

I tried walking on them, but not running. They have a different feel than a regular belted treadmill because of the track design. Not bad, just different.

They are pretty noisy as I recall.

NFL teams use them because they can handle up to 400 pound persons.

I heard they get good ratings on noise. Vandy Student Rec Center has some- not that that helps me!

3.2 miles this morning. 18 degrees. That is really cold for us. I was OK in what I wore but my toes did get cold- surprisingly. I had my normal SmartWool socks and new Hokas, but my toes hurt by the time I finished. Not sure what that is about.

Yeah, I see in the reviews where they get a high noise rating.

Perhaps the ones at my club were not properly maintained, or maybe because the sound was different it was more noticeable to me.

They didn’t seem get a lot of use, although they weren’t positioned so you could watch a TV while on it, so maybe that was why.

Did a 30 minute workout this morning–TRX and kettle bells and some body weight exercises. Followed this with 40 minutes on the elliptical and then another 40 minutes on the treadmill.

My husband has a Landice treadmill in his office. Everyone there seems to like it. I think they got one that was re-conditioned so that it wasn’t as expensive as a new model.
