Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Considering I just had the flu, I feel quite accomplished with my 20 min per mile for 3 miles around the lake yesterday. First time Ive gone around it with my new knee.
It also was the first time my dog has been to this lake & not only was he making me go a bit faster than I would have otherwise, but I had to keep him from jumping in!
I feel guilty, it was so nice yesterday, I tied my jacket around my waist.

More snow tonight into tomorrow - another 6 inches. This is ridiculous! I guess I know what my early morning workout will be. I haven’t ridden outside in so long I don’t know if I can any longer balance myself on a bike not attached to an indoor trainer ;).

I am here abasket! Have been walking and biking at the gym and trying to complete my shedding for the wedding program. Family life has been a bit hectic and the horrendous cold temps a bit crazy but I am still getting to the gym. Yesterday i walked three miles on the dreadmill and biked for 30 minutes. Having a warm up today. It is already only -2! ;)

My heart goes out to those of you getting the storm. Michigan is quiet and warmer at the moment…by warmer, I mean just daytime 20s, though it got up to 31 yesterday. Then again, we’ve had long bouts with ridiculous volumes of snow, so we can use a reprieve.

They’re calling for 40s next week…but lots of rain, and below freezing temps at night…and they’re calling for flooding. I am on a hill, as you know, across from the river that swamped a gf’s house last spring, so while I’m not worried the river will breach, I’m a bit worried whether my bizarre collection of French drains will handle the runoff. I’d almost forgo the warmup to avoid the possible drainage issue and ice on the driveway because its t-2 weeks until the studio move and I’m having nightmares about the truck getting up the hill.

At anyrate, I am also back down to roughly Oct. weight and about 2 lbs from all time low…but it’s V-day, and I am a sucker for chocolate…

Idad, I need that line in the sand too or else I’m sunk.

Michael…I don’t know if folks are just crazy here, but we seem to have a breed of cyclist in Michigan that rides in the snow. Just the other day I passed one in awe. On one hand, I’m glad your not crazy…but on the other, I can appreciate that cabin fever sucks  I actually miss the snowshoeing now in the summer…not that I’d trade the summer overall, but its weird to miss the crunchy snow and beautiful light that happens in winter. I try to remember that when I’m impatient for spring :)

They have those fat tire snow bikes! I think that would be fun, except for the temperature part and the part about how I would fall over every 20 feet!

I spoke a little too soon. A friend sent us a huge pan of these homemade “GoomBahs” which are sort of like a caramel brownie. I had a piece last night- but just ONE- which is pretty good progress. It was worth it.

Good job on the 3 miles, Emerald!
Glad to see you haven’t frozen up there, NMinn. I can’t even imagine.
Michael- I saw all the pictures from the Philly area. Really bad. My son is flying out sometime today to Colorado. I hope he makes it out.

I could ride my mtn or cross bike in the snow but the amount of salt and dirt on the bike would be massive and with the temperatures being what they are, I would have no way to clean that corrosive mess out of the drivetrain. Plus the risk of crashing if on the road just isn’t worth it. Trail riding in the snow can be a lot of fun - and crashing isn’t that much of an issue since the snow covers all the rocks :). But I just miss road riding :(.

MOWC, your son should be ok getting out. All the major roads are clear and temperatures are going up into the mid to high 30’s so the airport should be ok as long as he gets out before tomorrow when we are supposed to get another 3-4 inches! BTW, I’ve seen those super fat tire snow bikes. Look like fun but weigh a ton.

Ran in my spiffy new North Face gear. Worked great and best run I’ve had in a while  it has also warmed yo to 22 so I’m sure that helped also.

Hope everyone has a great Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day weekend.

H asked if we wanted to go to our local yummy chocolate shop and I could pick out some candy. I told him that was really nice but I’m trying to eat less. He said, oh so you are dieting! And I told him no, I’m trying to eat less! I am not going to call it a diet!

Maybe just ONE piece of chocolate?! It’s Valentine’s Day!!! :)

I read this morning - “Athletes don’t diet and exercise, they eat well and train.” Wouldn’t call myself an athlete but like that statement.

Deb, so are you finding some outside space that is snow/ice free to run on?? I’m hoping by sometime next week to be able to get out SOMEWHERE!!!

OhI feel your pain, everyone who got affected by the terible winter weather. Used to live in a place where winter snow with all its worst consequences was the norm, so Seattle rain does not bother me - I appreciate the fact that I do not need a shearling coat to survive the coldest months here! :)

EK - great progress! 20 min miles with a dog and a healing knee is pretty speedy!

Ran 6 miles last night. Going 7.2 mph for ca. 50 min after a sushi dinner is not fun, but somehow i survived.

I can survive the snow, it’s the bitter cold that bothers me.

4 miles in today on the dreadmill.

Hug your Garmin, today. 25 years ago, on Feb 14, 1989, the first GPS satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral.

<a href=“Celebrating 25 Years of Not Getting Lost Thanks to GPS | WIRED”>http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2014/02/happy-anniversary-gps/</a></p>

Cool, idad - I’m going to treat mine to a nice battery charge tonight (planning for the longish run this weekend).

Bunsen, from what I’m seeing on the hourly forecast (through Sunday noon), it looks like early Saturday morning may be your best shot before the wind starts picking up.

Do y’all think I should buy the Garmin a special sweater for days when I take it out in bad weather?

^^^Just don’t block the GPS reception!

Thanks, Deborah! I hope I will be able to drag Mr B out of the bed early enough. I only need 2 hours of better weather for my run! :)

My first Garmin died of exposure to the elements. Maybe that could have been prevented by a special sweater. The current one is a model designed for triathletes - so far, so good, it can run nekkid, rain or shine :D

Here ya go Deborah, this can keep your Garmin cozy before and after!!!

In our family we have a habit of naming inanimate objects - our cars, our GPS"s, etc. any of you have a name for your Garmin??

^^^She Who Must Be Obeyed…

iDad- shopping guru for CC! I’m going to tell H about the Patagonia.

I haven’t named my Garmin, but I have named our multi-function printer/copier/scanner at work (that seems to be on last legs). Known to me as “my big friend”!

Good day at work. Donuts and cupcakes in the morning (cupcakes weren’t special, so I resisted- and only a half a donut), bonuses and early dismissal. Unfortunately, I had to go downtown to a mediation so I didn’t get the early dismissal. Got my 2 miles in this morning. Rain started at 2pm. It is supposed to be 21 degrees for my 15K Hot Chocolate race in the am. I am working hard on my resolution to not freak out about my races. I am going to dress warmly and not worry about my time.
