Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Math mom, what other kinds of equipment will you have in your home gym? I hang my TRX from what is essentially a pull up bar on a piece of free standing equipment that is heavy enough not to be moved by me pulling or hanging from the straps at an angle. I unclip the TRX straps when they are not in use, just leaving the mounting strap wrapped around the pull up bar. You can also do as IDad suggested. In fact, if your joists are typical 12 inch joists, you could probably get away with a heavy duty flat stock u bracket lag bolted with 4 bolts to the joist and the TRX attached to a heavy duty swivel attached to the bottom of the bracket. Even better, through bolt a 3 ft section of a. 2x12 on each side of the joist and bolt the bracket to the reinforcing sections.

I actually bet you could hang the TRX from one of the manufactured joists and never have a problem – just a short section of 2 x 4 on each side of the particle board and a lag bolt/washer combo. But, I understand the concern.

I had to hang my chin up bar from an older style of manufactured beam – one made from 2 x 4s sandwiched between plywood. I was able to sink some of the bolts into the 2 x 4 with long lag bolts. One of the four went through the plywood, where I used a long bolt/nut combination with a big shoulder washer. It hasn’t budged, even though it’s all supported by a single beam.

I have my Jungle Gym XT attached to the chin up bar. It’s not ideal (a little too low), but it’s serviceable.

In addition to the TRX, I’ve got a bench, a barbell, some dumbbells that you can attach weights to and some ready made dumbbells in 10 and 15 pounds. Two kettle balls, one is 15 pounds, one is 20. One of those big balls. A yoga mat. I think that’s it. The new room will be about 8.5 feet by 12.5 feet. I’d have no worries about the old part of my basement which has regular 2x10 joists, but i-joists are a little different. They basically operate like a truss: http://www.woodaware.info/fire_frame/roof/i-joist/detail/i-joist_detailpic7.html</a></p>

It may be that it’s fine to bolt 2x’s or an LVL on either side, but I wouldn’t do it without checking what they recommend.

Just dropping in to say I want candy. wipes single tear and continue to gnaw on celery

Mount joist hangers on the sides of the i-beam, and then put a 2 x or 4 x whatever between them. That way the load is carried on the top of the beam and you should be able to hang hundreds of pounds from it.

Yes, that’s what I think too. The joists are sized to carry 40 pounds per square foot.

@Niquii77, there’s a world between candy and celery. You should be able to eat something a little more satisfying than celery!

Am back from our yearly vacation in the Sleeping Bear Dunes area. As always we were very active and ate way too much. I’m up a couple of pounds but hoping to get those off pretty soon. But the food was great, lots of fresh fruit but lots of fruit pies and pomme frites also lol!

It’s hard getting back to normal, my hunger still seems to be on vacation! Meaning I’m hungry all the time. The thing that is hard is that we don’t eat at regular times and dinner is really really late. The people we go with eat at 9. Or later! I find that hard.

3 mile run today, felt sluggish. My credit card was hacked while on vacation so yesterday was taken getting that straightened out.

H and I are going to see Buddy Guy tonight. Idad isn’t the only concert goer here ;)

I feel your pain, Niquii. I would like candy too. But I think I’ll go for a run instead.

Deb, your vacation sounds great! I am still trying to have two five pound parties. It just gets harder and harder. I think H finally gets it - he’s down another five pounds, but remember folks, he was close to 300 pounds when this started.

Hang in there, Niquii. I keep walking by a pile of cookies. Had another cup of green tea instead!

Here is a good list of what not to do in a gym (or at home):

<a href=“7 Exercises Fitness Experts Wish You Would Stop Doing | HuffPost Life”>http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/5641513</a></p>

Congratulations, NMinn!

Cheering for your willpower, niquii!

I ran 2.5 miles on the treadmill today. About to go for a walk with DH. We were rained out of our walk last night because little pieces of Bertha kept swinging by our way with precipitation and plenty of lightning.

deb922, that stinks about the credit card hack.

Thank you for the support, you guys! Have any of you noticed how doorknobs look like chocolate covered peanuts?..I think I’m becoming delirious. @-)

Going to try to make some crunchy roasted vegetables tonight so I have more things to munch on in the afternoons.

Niquii, good idea … Distract your sugar cravings with delicious roasted veggie snacks.

I need to look into this TRX. I also need to figure out how to work a yoga session into my life once a week. Now that I’m unsore I miss all that stretching and bending and relaxing.

My race today was good, no records but nice cool weather and a kick butt finish.

Did I miss why Niquii can only eat celery sticks?!

Welcome home Deb922! Bummer about the pounds but I KNOW those cherry pies (assuming!) were truly worth it! You were right back on the pavement today so soon those pounds will be history!

Hot and humid today with a supposive chance of storms all day (never rained a drop till a few mins ago) - brought work out clothes to work and joined Plantmom on the treadmill for a change - 32 min run - treadmills are great when you only have to use it every 6 weeks or so!!! It was sort of a nice change.

I hiked 7+ miles today – people from the San Francisco area might know it, called the Dipsea, from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach. Every June there is a race, called the Dipsea, where 1500 runners climb hundreds of stairs and go up and down a mountain. I didn’t shoot video, but you can see the course on the website, Dipsea.org. I cannot imagine running this thing. The friend I hiked with today ran it this year for the first time – her goal was to finish in under 2 hours uninjured. It’s a fascinating race, with most runners given a handicap based on gender and age. It was a great hike.

Dipsea looks gorgeous! What a nice part of the country!

SnowflakeVT, if you gp to the TRX website, there are videos of the TRX in use which can give you a pretty good idea of what it’s all about. I also registered for the instructor certification course which is offered locally on September 5.

The Dipsea and Double Dipsea are difficult races. Some of my running friends have done the races. Gorgeous but SO hard!

The TRX videos make me feel like I just worked out. Pretty interesting gadget, now I’ll go back and re-read the TRX conversations.

I have to say, Snowflake, that I am loving TRX so far. The class I’m taking is intended to focus on the core, but you really get a good workout for all parts of your body. I was supposed to run this morning but cheated and ran last night because it’s just too tiring to double up on running and TRX in the same day, as I found out on Monday.

MOWC, thinking of you today and hoping you get the “all clear” to run.

I’ll second that wish for MOWC. :)

For those of you who exercise to music and perhaps use Spotify, did you know that they have a bunch of playlists specifically for running/walking/exercising to different tempos? Really a nice selection!!

On Spotify, click browse-genres then genres and moods then “workout”.
