Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Fire and Rain - an article I read in running times indicated that there is a 2 to1 ratio for pool work to get the same training effect you get from running . It was discussing cross training and rehab. So 60 minutes of pool work would equal 30 minutes of running. I guess it equates to calories burned too from the myfitnesspal calculator . 60 minutes of moderate swimming equals 444 calories. 30 minutes of running at 7:30 pace equals 428 calories and 60 minutes of aqua jogging equals 508 calories. Although I don’t know if I agree with many of the calorie counts for many of these exercises on myfitnesspal.

Sabaray, I went through the same thing with my training, doubting myself- partially because I had a friend who was running like crazy, e.g., 10-15 miles every Sunday flowing an 18-miler on Saturday! And she was telling me that was the only way to train. I felt tired, which is normal (as long as there is no persistent pain localized to a single area, general tiredness is ok, as MOfWC said). You should be in good shape by Nov 15! You might be tempted to cut down on the tapering, because it really feels weird to lazy-butt for a couple of weeks after some crazy running, but it will really do more good than harm to your race!

And if you are following the marathon rookie plan shooting for Nov 15 - just wait a few weeks, the intense running will start soon enough. :)

Exactly! Why push it? I’ve really been trying to focus on my core and upper body when the mileage hasn’t been so intense and I definitely feel stronger when I am running. I’ve been really lucky and nothing hurts, knock on wood. I am really enjoying the TRX workouts and they have made a big difference. I like our trainer - I think the class ends on 9/10 and then I am going to do a small group training with two other women for another six weeks. Then it’s just running.

Sabaray–stick to your plan. I don’t know much about running, but I do believe that you know your body and how you feel. Don’t get swept away by what others say. I’d encourage you to keep up the TRX, even if it’s just once a week. The weight training (like TRX) is so good for you in so many ways.

Sabaray, I think you are amazing! What a journey for you since this thread has first started! You have led the pack of many of us in being inspiring.

Happy to watch you blaze your own trail!

Thanks, everyone. I need to check in with my support system more regularly!

Bromfield, the TRX is awesome. The class is a total of 5 of us, all very motivated and supportive. I hate using the machines for weights and finally feel confident in using the dumbbells, body bars, etc. so I’ll definitely keep up the weight training. Having it scheduled definitely helps with that.

I survived my backpacking overnight. 35 pound pack. The walk in (3.2 flat miles) was just about perfect. Enough for a good solid workout each day, but not enough to feel like a death march. I’m still working on figuring out the pace with that kind of load.

Lots of excitement in the middle of the night. I was camping next to a first-year orientation trip of Yalies. Poor kids, they were pretty much demolished by a very strenuous six day backpacking trip in the White Mountains and, honestly, not that well outfitted – sleeping under a big clear plastic painters tarp.

In the middle of the night (about 1 am) I heard a mass murderer scream. The kind of scream that you’d let out if you were home alone and Charlie Manson walked in the door. Turns out, one of the kids has woken up to see a bear poking around their backpacks six feet away! I never actually saw the bear, but about 10 minutes later, I hear "BEAR! BEAR! from the next campsite on the other side of me. Sheesh. Needless to say, I didn’t get right back to sleep… :)

They said they put all their food in the bear box (dumpster) at the camping area. But, after four days, their packs had to be laced with food smells and the bear was looking for some easy eats. Kinda aggravating because I had all my food and smellables in a bear cannister a couple hundred feet from my tent. The bear didn’t want anything to do with me and I didn’t want anything to do with the bear. It could have tried to figure out how to get my food all night for all I care!

No video of the bear…

Hey I think you are doing great sabaray! I hate all the naysayers, poo to them! Everyone needs to be healthy, not just those who want to lose weight.

Been trying to run 3 times a week. Been really happy running 3-4 miles at a time. After my calf strain, I don’t want to over do it and 3 miles feels good so that’s what I’m sticking with. I was going to run a 10k on Labor Day but I think I’m going to drop down to the 5k because I’m not wanting to do the long runs. Mostly I’ve been playing more golf and enjoying that (and getting better, not great but better) so I feel like doing what I like doing instead of putting the time into training right now.

Having just said that, I talked to my D today and we are going to do the 5k at the Runner’s World Festival in October. She’s going to do the five and dime and of course now I’m toying with the idea of doing that also. I’m sure I could if I want to. ;). But do I want to… There are 8 weeks until that race, time enough to train. September is looking busy though with a couple of golfing trips, do I want to add training into that.

I’m not sure. Decision, decisions :)

Wow, iDad. That IS some excitement! Glad you had a good trip except for the missed sleep due to the Yalies and the bear!

October is a great month for running Deb922!!! Forgive me, but what is a “five and dime”? Must have to do with a 5/10k??

We had the high humidity today and I had a crazy schedule till now so I stole in hour at the gym at my workplace today and ran for 30 and rowed for 15.

Idad - WOW. Glad everyone came out in one piece (including the bear). :)

Just read idads post - double yikes!!! I draw the line at bears!!

I can imagine the look on that bear’s face when that girl screamed…

Yikes on the bear! Otherwise nothing to report. My exercise today was walking from the DMV to the parking meter four times - I still can’t believe how slow it was but ds has a learner’s permit again.

They have meters at the DMV? Oh, greedy slugs… At least ours have free parking…

Took the Huakas for a 30 minute test run! Loved them. I hope my leg muscles will agree with me tomorrow. As MOfWC said, they are on the firmer side (but very, very well cushioned!) and somewhat more sleek looking for a pair of Hokas, so yes, one can run fast in them. I did not, because it would be insane to try to break the sound barrier in brand new shoes. JK about the sound barrier. The Huakas weigh even less then my other Hokas that are feather-light and have ample toe room, which is important for someone like me who has lost multiple toenails due to rubbing shoes. These are the beauties (in purple):

Short video. May not be playable on mobile devices. Sorry. I had to use this song…

The Yalie’s are crossing the river, while I was filtering water for coffee and dinner. They all had flip flops, but their group leader made them keep their boots and socks on to get completely soaked. I took Crocs to cross the river this morning for a little sight-seeing, but decided I really didn’t feel like getting wet (it was 45 degrees last night).

Here’s what they were sleeping in: a plastic tarp. I would think Yale could spring for a couple of tents:

<a href=“Typical Day | FOOT”>Typical Day | FOOT;

I had the maiden voyage for a lightweight backpacking tent.

Wow, idad, lots of excitement!
Last summer we had a report of a wayward black bear in my woods after an uncharacteristic report of an attack on a young girl. The bear eventually wandered onto the road a few miles away and was killed in a collision with a car.

Black bears are protected in Michigan, and most don’t live this far south, but I admit it gave me pause on my hill  Of course, there was lots of “helpful” commentary about my need to carry bear spray, though I suspect the odds of my “surprising” a bear on my hill are about nil. Between the thrashing and the panting, there’s never any stealth in my hikes…the only animals I seem able to 'surprise" are ancient box turtles and the odd snake.

Sabary, sounds like your program is going well. I think I need to get with a program so to speak ;)

So I don’t do much that’s particularly strenuous in terms of impact because I’m always taking care around my idiot back facet joints, right? But I always assume I’m safe in the pool…

Sunday night mch was teasing me that my dives weren’t very high (our diving board is stiff, likely because our diving well is 9-feet)). My diving form is usually pretty good – and its something I really enjoy. Well, idiot me decides to show him one so I tried to get some extra height by really springing up/off but I lost my form and hit the water at a weird angle and felt my right hip and leg fly out of alignment. I was a bit sore, and I stopped diving for the night, but didn’t think much of it, except 'doh! Sucks not to be 18 ;)

Got up Monday and could hardly rotate my head! So by yesterday, my neck muscles are in deep spasm and I can’t even shoulder-check when I drive. It’s ridiculous!

I’m on the naprosyne-heat-Australian-dream program and its feeling a little better this morning but I suspect I have a wee issue in my c-vertebrae now. Stupid bones! I’m kinda sick of these shenanigans…I’d line a new bionic spine  Beam me up!

Bears, diving mishaps…yikes! KMC, clearly you’ve forgotten that we’re geezers. Hope you’re feeling better today.

BB, glad you liked your shoes! I’m looking out my window and seeing fog. Right now it’s 63 with a dew point of 62. Humidity of 99%. I think I’ll be visiting the treadmill later today.

Great video and song! Your pack and equipment look terrific. I know it’s a learning process, but you sure have figured out this hiking-thing!

Love the shoes, Bunsen.

Welcome new shoes to BB’s running feet! They are snazzy looking! Almost time for my feet to get new digs as well.
