Are you an athlete or a poseur ?

Lol! Gotta love some verbiage - “athleisure market”.

I had the weirdest experience last night! As I was heading upstairs to go to bed, about 2 hours after finishing my run, a strong cramp crippled my right foot! At first, I thought, “Oh, no, it couldn’t be the shoes!” Nothing seemed to help… Not even Mr B’s massaging my foot helped at all (he was amused to see my toes take on the life of their own and twitch in weird ways!)! After several minutes of this agony, I reached for the jar of magnesium pills and chewed on one… In the next 2 minutes, the cramp was gone like it never happened! I have had these cramps before, and forgot how nasty they could be! They used to last for up to an hour, with gradually subsiding pain. I do not think the shoes had anything to do with it, but the magnesium trick seemed to work well! If anything like this happens again, I will continue with my N=1 clinical trial. ;)

Ohiopublic - I can’t wait til I retire and then I get to wear yoga clothes all day long! ha ha

Interesting BB - I get those in my foot from time to time - D2 does too. Might have to invest in some magnesium!

On athleisure apparel: who knew that $90 yoga pants would be a money-saving strategy?
That’s a stretch (pun intended).

My most versatile clothing purchase? The hideously expensive Patagonia Capilene 4 baselayer – pants and hoody. Wore it in the winter as long johns down to 11 degrees. Now, I wear it as camping PJs. Just perfect for chilly summer nights. I did the permethrin treatment so I can hang around outside without bug spray and not get eaten alive.

kmcmom:

aargh. Heal up quickly!

I wouldn’t worry about bears on your hill. Probably a bigger risk of seeing them at your trash cans than on your trail. These campsite bears are a nuisance because they are used to people.

I’ll confess that almost all the clothing I’ve bought in the last year is workout gear – although I do wear it to work out! One of the main reasons is that I’m so displeased by the fashion options this year – crop tops, maxi skirts – yuck, I’d rather wear racerback tanks and yoga pants. Since I’m retired, I’ve invested in nicer workout clothes because I often just keep them on all day.

I know I mentioned this once before when someone wanted to know what to wear to NYC – I’m tempted to put on my sneakers and workout clothes next time I visit, figuring that’s the best way now to look like a local.

As for foot cramps, I used to get them all the time. Almost every day. Often in the middle of swimming (that was horrendous). I started eating a banana every day, and that solved the problem. In fact, I was traveling abroad this spring and went about 2 weeks without a banana, and what do you know, my foot cramped.

Clothing? How’s this for clothing. My daughter spends about $4000/year on workout clothing, shoes and spinning shoes and because virtually all of it, except for the spinning shoes, can be worn outside of the gym or studio, she can’t even take it as a tax deduction based on her business as a trainer and spinning studio manager. Of course, if she bought anything other than lulu lemon (expensive even with her discounts), maybe she would spend less but she loves the comfort and functionality of it. I’m just glad she’s supporting herself
!

Magnesium is certainly on the public radar these days as a “miracle supplement” which I find kinda funny because I’ve supplemented for so long I suppose I take it for granted. By this I don’t mean BB’s comment, but a spate of Facebook miracle cure posts…and then this morning, even H asked me if shouldn’t I take more magnesium
(re my neck spasms)

I told him if I took any more magnesium than I’m already taking I might need to wear diapers
(Magnesium can act as an unintended laxative in mega doses for some folks…but generally fine around 500 mg)

At any rate, slowly increasing ability to turn head so will give the hill a whirl this morning. Spasms pretty much gone, left neck muscles merely tender.

And Ohio, while I’m a poseur at heart, I’ve gotta admit I wouldn’t wear $90 yoga pants on the hill…they’d be ruined in no time from the inevitable burrs! Instead I wear cheap but lightweight yogas (poison ivy so even in summer, gotta cover up) and a tank with a permethrin-soaked old men’s dress shirt over top (re poison ivy), a Tilley hat and Coleman mosquito net
NOT a fashion statement, to be certain! But the outfit certainly reduces the summer hazards on the hill!

The only time to wear “nice” workout clothes in my case is…when I’m not “working out”
hi ho.

Stick with your program sabaray! You will be fine. Glad your H is doing well on the weight loss program. You are an inspiration!

kmc…Sorry to hear about your diving injury! Feel better!

idad…we have bears here at the lake. We have to have a bear bar on the trash dumpster. D2 has seen bears around here when she runs in the morning. Makes me nervous! Your videos are great!

D2 and I have switched from Lululemon to Zella, a Nordstrom house brand for yoga pants. I think many of the college girls around here switched away from Lululemon a few years ago when the brand was having some construction issues and the pants were pilling. She also likes the Nike running shorts that have the built in spandex shorts. The more colorful the better! D1 likes whatever looks pretty and is on sale at TJ Maxx!
She is training for a 10 mile run and is also having leg cramps. She is eating bananas and kiwis but I will tell her to get some magnesium pills.

Magnesium seems to be recommended for everything lately…my doc recommends a supplement for migraine prevention. Given my digestive issues it is unfortunately something I can’t tolerate.

NM, I like those Nike shorts as well. I still love the Lulu stuff I got recently.

Got to the gym last night and decided to do Saturday’s long run - 8.5 miles. Will run and lift today as I have a monthly challenge Saturday (hence the early long run) and really want a legit rest day on Sunday. H will be at a training Sunday through Tuesday and I am really looking forward to it.

Re: MNK’s post. Lol! There is some workout clothing that does not belong outside a gym or a running trail, but Lulu does sell a variety of things that can easily be worn as purely street clothes. That’s what I use their leggings for!
I just got an email with a link to a goshdarnit such a cute fall dress that goes well with leggings. Sigh.

Speed-walked all the way from the top of Capitol Hill to the bottom of Queen Anne Hill last night! Wow.

@sabaray - there are a lot of different forms of Mg, some cause much less digestive issues than others.

Of course, the cheaper forms (oxide, citrate) are the worst (magnesium citrate is often used as a colonoscopy prep), and the good ones get expensive, but it might be worth looking into.

You can also soak in a magnesium salt like Epsom salts and absorb the Mg through your skin.

Almost everyone is deficient in Mg these days.

Thanks, NRE - doc specificially cautioned me against the oxide and citrate versions. I hadn’t thought of Epsom salts - these days my soaks are confined to the gym whirlpool. Sabadog and sabapup think water running in the tub is their cue to hop on in!

I use chelated magnesium glycinate, there are also malate and orotate forms (and probably a few others) which are supposed to cause less digestive issues. You’d have to try them to see what you can tolerate.

I saw that Lulu dress, Bunsen! I’m waiting for more colors. I also wear a LOT of Lulu stuff to work. I have a tank and a more flowy flowered sleeveless top on today with white jeans (jeans Friday). I wear the Lulu leggings and capris a lot, just like Bunsen. I’ll wear the running skirts around casually on the weekends, besides for running.

Speaking of running- I’m really struggling. There are so many factors at play that I don’t know which one(s) is tanking me, but something sure is! Of course I’m recovering from two fracture situations, it’s extremely hot and humid even at 6am, I lost quite a bit of conditioning, I just got back from a cool, dry climate… The bottom line is that my 3 mile run felt like a death march (but not as bad as the other day when I was dehydrated) this morning.

My daughter has her first Olympic distance triathlon in the morning and it’s going to be dangerously hot by the time she gets to the 10K run. We’re going to cheer her on. She’s very well prepared, but it’s disappointing that the goal is going to be survival because of the extreme heat. My son is doing some extreme mountain biking (oh, yay) trying to prepare for a qualifying triathlon for the XTerra off-road triathlon world championships in Maui. His qualifying race is in Quebec. He’s hoping the Canadians won’t want to spring for a Maui ticket that late even if they beat him in the age group. It filters on down if the top folks don’t claim the Maui spot. It’s 2 weeks after Kona and he already has his tickets booked. The girlfriend goes to half ironman worlds in 2 weeks to try to defend her world age group championship from last year. It’s in Canada this year. Then…Kona.

I feel old and tired. I can’t go back to hot yoga yet because the ribs aren’t quite there, although the rapid healing is astonishing. I really think the Forteo osteoporosis injections have helped with that.

Healing thoughts–MOWC.

I did two yoga classes yesterday–first one was Yin (which involves holding a pose for 3-5 minutes). Hadn’t planned on taking another class, but my D (who’s visiting) wanted to go to a class in the evening and asked me to go with her. I felt fine, so I went–it was a regular flow (vinyasa) class.

I’m wearing running clothes to work 1-2 times a week and if clients won’t be visiting. My daughter’s friends saw me in a suit the other day and didn’t recognize me without running clothes.

Pretty much an exclusive tjmaxx buyer here for clothes. Otherwise I couldn’t purchase new bikes, Garmins, knee braces, etc etc etc

MOWC - maybe you ought to see if someone has an AlterG in your area to get your running legs back. I set mine at 70% weight and use it to get the feeling of going faster or to rehab. Move the weight up gradually . I know that Salazar uses them for the Nike Oregon Project

Goucher injury rehab
http://www.oiselle.com/blog/comeback-building-base-after-injury

MOWC, don’t despair! I know how frustrating and demoralizing it can feel to be “laid low” by a series of debilitating injuries when you are accustomed to being an active, vital athlete. It really eats at you. Try to put things in the perspective of the time and effort you spent over the years to get into the kind of shape you’re in. You’re experiencing a set back but with the same perseverance you’ve brought to your training all these years, you’ll pull through this. A female friend of mine who is 63 and is a life long body builder and elite level masters cyclist recently had very serious disk surgery and I’ve watched her struggle to recover and return to her previous fitness levels. She’s not there yet and it will take several months more, but week by week she is clawing her way back. Give it time, you’ll get there!

I might not get there, and I understand that. At my age every setback- even after recovery- takes away from performance/times. I lost about a minute a mile after my 2010-11 upper hamstring stuff. I think a lot of this is the heat. I’m normally good in the heat, but I lost my acclimatization, despite hot yoga!

In other news, the handoff of new Ragdoll kitten Hawi (named for the Kona town where the bike course turns around) has been made from the breeder to H near the Austin airport! Nashville landing about 5:10pm!
