Happy trails, Fireandrain!

Idad, sounds like an awesome trek!

Ok, I am up in Canada at my mom’s after a funeral – dear friend lost his wife…2yrs younger than me.

So I brought my patagonia down sweater hoodie for the drive and now my mom wants it

I told her if she spoils herself with a $300+ Canadian down sweater jacket, she has to promise to sweat outside for a mile every day

I’m in Nevada now and may get to hit up a new (to me) LuLulemon tomorrow. I got one last run in this morning in Napa. My legs are tired from yesterday’s longer run.

4.25 miles plus upper & lower body weight workout. Then a nap.

We did the 10 miles today (barely)- so getting down to the wire next weekend for the half. The chilly air (35) was actually pleasant. I think I got the right clothing down with my Penn State hat- can’t wait! Hope to finish and I think we will. Expected to be really nice sunny 55 that day but… we start at 7 AM which will be about 25. H wanted to sign up for the over 4 hr start to give him some room to go slow or walk- I am predicting a 3.5 hr for me and 3 hr for him.

5.4 miles in Henderson, NV where every road goes up or down- for a LONG way! I have some altitude adjustment issues here, too- it’s not really high but there is some altitude. Did it- 33 mile week. Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valley.

Going shoe shopping with a friend who has troubles finding the right pair of shoes - I expect a LOT of walking! I hope she wears her fitbit because I’m curious how many steps it will take.

Loved the cover of the latest Bloomberg Businessweek issue:

Well I screwed up in my first triathlon. Swam 17 laps in 10 minutes which I was happy with. I screwed up in the bike. The old spinning bikes (which I practiced on) measured miles in strict rpms. The new spin bikes (which we rode on today) measured miles as a blend of tension and rpms . I had no tension and averaged over 142 rpms for 25 minutes but scored extremely low because I had no tension. Guess I didn’t understand. At that point I was out of my game and only ran 2.85 miles for 20 minutes. Was hoping for at least 3.1. No scores yet, but the bike definitely hurt me. Guess I should have consulted with MNKat !

Ohiopublic, don’t be down! You went outside your comfort zone, it’s a win. If you do another one, you’ll know what to do and now you have room to improve. It’s all good.

5th day in a row that I’ve skiied. 8 miles XC skiing, 2.5 hours. I am utterly exhausted. Everything hurts. Tomorrow a rest day.

Well, you learned! Proud of you for trying it!

Well, I was sick and tired of all the snow, so I took off and drove to …Cleveland. Yeah. On a snowy day!!! Can’t catch a break…

Here just overnight for a conference tomorrow - made good use of the hotel exercise room for a mixed bag of the equipment for 45 minutes.

Hey Ohio, don’t beat yourself up - best laid plans and all - you’ll be prepared next time - heck, figuring out one sport and how it goes in a race is a challenge - let alone THREE events!!!

Deb, what are you going to do when all that snow FINALLY melts!!? 8 miles - I’m impressed!!!

Good news!

We are getting more snow tonight… :frowning:

Dreaded Airdyne for me. Another little five mile cruise. Hammies are on fire.

Back from the BVIs and into an ice storm in the Phila area. No snow, just ice; some things never change this winter lol!

Nrdsb4, sorry to hear about your injury. Hang in there!

Ohiopublic, just stepping up for your first triathlon is an accomplishment in of itself. You no doubt had a great experience and your performance in your next event will reflect that. The newer bikes that were used provided a more realistic simulation of outdoor riding and if you can find them for your indoor training, that would probably be beneficial not just for your indoor events but also for cold/messy weather indoor training for outdoor events. In this regard, I would also suggest that when doing indoor cycling training, cadence should be limited to not more than 110 rpm except when doing sprints of no more than 30-45 second duration. Find a comfortable cadence between 90-110 rpms and focus on increasing your resistance within that cadence range. That will better simulate riding an outdoor time trial. One of the things I’ve observed in some indoor cycling classes is that excessively high cadences are promoted by instructors who usually have little actual outdoor cycling experience. You end up spinning you legs like a hamster on a wheel, with light resistance, which provides little real world training and also risks injury as form deteriorates due to excessive leg speed. Even when sprinting indoors, I would limit cadence to no more than 120 and increase the training effect by adding resistance, not leg speed. In fact, the newest bikes from Star-Trac (used by Mad Dogg certified Spinning Studios) start flashing the cadence readout if you exceed 120 as a cue to slow down and add resistance.

Now that I’m back, need to really focus on training for my March 21 75 mile hill ride. With the way the roads have been, don’t know how many opportunities I will have for weekend outdoor training, so I’m increasing my indoor cycling sessions to 90 minutes each. Ugh! Did the first one today :(.

Good morning and kudos to the movers/shakers

I have managed to claw back what I suspect was 8 lbs of mostly water from the cruise, but still have Xmas and my SF vaca to work off. IME, this is where it gets tough

I’m sure this article is one part fantasy, but for those who miss a day at the gym, here’s an “alternative”

Perhaps I should start supplementing!

Ohio, good for you trying something new! I know it was a lot of work invested - sounds like some good advice from MichaelNKat.

fireandrain, vacation sounds wonderful, hope you’re enjoying!

Rocky, sounds like you are well prepared for your half!

Weather here is miserable - warm, cold, rain, ice, snow…so lots of treadmill which is nothing too exciting to write about. KMC’s method sounds much more interesting!

Upper body weight and planks

ohio, at least you’ll know next time, it sounds like a good experience.

Thanks all. Unfortunately I missed out on a nice trophy. That’s why we do these things right—for the BSO!

Ohio, anyone completing a triathlon is a hero in my books! Bike is the reason I would never do one. congrats, the bling will be yours next time.

Ohio–next time you’ll shine! Congratulations on what you did do.

Hot yoga for me today. Good class–I kept up and modified as needed.

Met up with a girlfriend who is working on losing weight - she is probably 100 pounds overweight and has struggled for a long, long time. She told me she was walking on the treadmill, so I encouraged her to do Couch to 5K, and if she doesn’t feel she can run, just maybe do 3.0 mph for the walking and bump it up to 3.5 for the “jogging” and go from there. I got her to agree to do a Color Run with me for incentive!! I told her we can walk it together (which she’s nervous about, 3 miles is a lot for her right now), or maybe I’ll run some parts and then run back to her and walk with her. This will get me going and will help her too!
