Ran the heat for a couple hours and got the basement gym up to 54 degrees for a little workout. Felt great to sling some weights around. I needed the dynamic warm-up and mobility stuff BAD! Got the the creaky joints loosened up a bit.
Rear foot elevated split squats and chin ups were shaky. KB swings and alternating DB bench press were good.
2 to 4 inches of snow in the overnight forecast. I don’t even know what to say anymore. I guess I should just be thankful it’s not 2 to 4 feet.
Cincinnati has more modest goals for the record, but we’re making them.
This weekend’s exercise was lifting a 5 year-old and a 6 month old. I can easily press the latter multiple times. And we walked a lot around Brooklyn. Wearing boots.
DIL reports success with a chiropractor who pointed out that she is hyperextended in all her joints. No previous physical therapist or chiro mentioned this. Apparently she has been not doing exercises properly because she can just lock her joints and support her weight in a pushup (for instance) without using her muscles (or the correct muscles.) Interesting.
That sounds like chiro mumbo jumbo to me. The only way I can think of to cheat a pushup is to not hold the core stiff, but to let the back arch backwards. That’s hyperextending the lumbar spine, but not relying on the joints. It still uses muscles. Just not fully engaging the core muscles. Maybe that’s what she was doing?
There is a trick in hiking called the rest step. It looks a little like the wedding march and you intentionally lock out the knee for a split second with every step. The idea is to fully support your weight on the bones and give the thigh/hip muscles a chance to fully unload for a split second with every step. It makes a huge difference going up hill, delaying the onset of burning leg muscles!
The good news is that the temperature here starts with a ‘4’ for the first time in… months? Seems like years. Stuff is actually melting.
The bad news is that the melt is coming out of the windows inside my house.
So my exercise today was bushwhacking a trail through thigh-deep snow to the back of my house, dragging the ladder back there, climbing said ladder and chopping the ice dams. Plus, shoveling off the lower roof and sidewalk again.
Like an ice rink out there. Poor pup, the only way for us to walk is to walk in the road in the neighborhood which does not satisfy his sniffing desires! Sidewalks are deadly. Ugh. Hoping for a little melting this weekend but everything is basically solid ice - like 2 feet of it, so we have to go through the cycle of melt a little during the day, freeze at night, ice in the morning, for awhile.
Indoor cycle class today–it was the killer class. I don’t know why but this particular instructor gets people to kick it up! We did lots of hill climbing today. I am going to sign up for a 90 minute class on Saturday–class is at 7:30 am. Hate the time but I am going to try it.
Ugh, ice dams. So far we haven’t had them (knock on wood).
Today’s exercise was hiking to Kroger & Dunkin’ (for coffee–with DH out of town, I don’t want to make a pot). Most of the businesses along the route have NOT shoveled their sidewalks, so it was very good exercise, picking a way around/over the moguls and slush. It’s not cold yet, but soon it’s supposed to start with the icy rain and then snow.
idad–I watched her do a pushup and she can support herself a long time on those locked elbows. Using the muscles, not so long. There are other examples too…her legs/knees noticeably hyperextend. I’m just happy to see her excited about doing exercises! (She has a weight problem.)
It’s rare but not a made up problem. I remember in HS a kid in marching band was hyperextended. When he stood at attention the backs of his calves were visibly poking the uniform pants. snicker
Even with doing adequate exercise and controlling my eating well, my blood pressure has become very high. It was 190+ over 100+. And I have been having bad case of headaches.
Started to take aggressive medication yesterday. Currently, I don’t want to get my heart rate up if I don’t have to.
I am posting here because I want to alert everyone. Just because you are exercise and diet right, does not mean you will be 100% health. Please continue to have regular check with your doctor, especially if you have any family history.
I heard on the news that a guy (from Boston maybe?) is selling blocks of snow on the internet. So he’s getting rid of his snow drifts and making money to boot.
Oh no, Dad II! What do they think is causing the increase in BP? Do they suspect a blockage or something? One of my friends who is one of the top runners his age in the country (he’s 74 now) had to have a stent put in last year and he has Grave’s disease. It is true that we are not immune from health issues at all!
I hope you can return to running shortly. Take care.
@Dad II, that is correct. Some people will have hypertension regardless of lifestyle. My younger sister is a size 0 and exercises almost compulsively. Without BP medicine, her systolic is in the 190s. I, too, have hypertension that seems resistant to lifestyle changes.
Thanks, DadII, and hope the meds will take care of the issue for you. Hypertension can be hereditary, so as others said, exercise alone may not help. But exercise and weight loss can lower the dose of the medication one might need to take to keep BP in check.
MOWC - you picked the wrong time to come to Sandusky. Unfortunately you can’t ride the roller coasters at Cedar Point. They have some great coasters at that park. My wife and I are looking to buy a vacation home close to Sandusky in a small Chautaqua type community called Lakeside.
Yep. 43 degrees today. I hardly knew what jacket to grab. The roads are wet, so I didn’t really end up with a clean car, but at least I went thru the car wash and got about sixteen pounds of salt off the car…
Dreaded Airdyne for me. As a change of pace, I just did five miles at a steady 50 rpm.
Glad you found out DadII before anything severe happened. What does the doc say about curtailing your exercise? Perhaps you were doing too much and stressing your body mentally and physically to keep up?
Note to self: do not go to the gym to run a half hour after you have ingested a large salad. Results: bad gastrointestinal conditions…
OhioPublic, Lakeside is a very, very nice community. Much more chill and what I would look for in a summer community than Put In Bay IMO. A friend of mine bought a cottage there at the end of last summer. She is ITCHING for good weather to come!!!
