Abasket - Lakeside is a good counter balance to my job and competitive running. I like the chill! Plus I can get a Put-in-bay hit if I need to walk on the wild side occasionally.
What a nightmare the snow has become this winter. Kudos to all of you for keeping up with its removal and staying active over the extended version of the cold season. We lived in very snowy places for a long, long time, and I can honestly say that I do not miss it, with the exception of about one day in December. I remember living in Minneapolis and having snowbanks in May. No fun.
DadII, I hope you get to the bottom of the blood pressure elevation so you can return to running soon.
abasket, I did have an ankle evaluation with x-rays by the orthopedic surgeon who was so helpful in fixing up a frozen shoulder a few years ago. He could see no problems with the bone and diagnosed a tender tendon. I opted not to get more testing (MRI) or therapy, and to try to get back to running, very carefully. I can still feel some aches after running, but they said that was to be expected, Today I did a run/walk (5 minutes run/1 minute walk) for about 2.5 miles on the treadmill. Followed it up with the weight machines. I also had about three extra miles of walking outside. Not 90 degrees, but close. The A/C has kicked on in full force
Yeah- this is not a garden spot in the winter! The roads are not runnable- there is still some ice and there aren’t good neighborhoods near this hotel. Besides, it is getting really cold tonight. I ran a couple of miles this afternoon on the hotel dreadmill. It’s a decent Precor, but in a tiny little exercise room and it got hot. Made me appreciate my setup at home.
And any melting MOWC that happened today is yep, going to freeze solid tonight. The neighborhoods here - an hour away from you are still horrible. Sadly, we have awful care of our roads - the neighborhood roads get very little attention.
Plantmom, good to know. Sounds like you are getting a nice workout and starting to increase your ankle stamina!
Well, I discovered another fitness role model! I want to be able to do 20 pushups when I am 81!

Yup, he’s from Boston. Just goes to show that some people will pay money for just about anything!
I’m finally feeling much better from the crud H shared with me, but will have to wait a couple days to get back to the gym. We’re very fortunate that our condo here in the city has a 1 car garage, but that leaves us fighting for street parking for the 2nd car. That’s a true battle these days with all the snow, so H’s car is safely stowed at his brother’s in the burbs until things start melting. H needs the car today and tomorrow … Oh well, I guess I can substitute some serious cleaning for my exercise.
I just read an article that dogs do not remember what happened yesterday, so I’m thinking our poor puppy has no recollection at all that she used to be able to run around our fenced in yard, chase squirrels, roll in the grass, etc. Even trying to take her for a walk on the sidewalks around here is struggle.
We only need a couple more of inches of snow to break the record, so we might as well go for it. I mean, honestly, what’s a little more snow at this point?
I saw on the news the report about dogs and memory - I think it was more in reference to short term memory. Clearly dogs remember their “people” and “places” !!!
Frozen tundra here this morning. Cold. Looking forward to this weekend when we might see 40. That will be 50 more degrees than we had a week ago - that’s crazy!
I went down to the closet sized gym at the hotel this morning and the treadmill would not turn on. I tried everything (plugging into other outlets, etc). I was pretty insistent with the front desk guy, and he tried everything. I wound up running laps in the 90 degree room with the indoor pool- each lap around the pool took 25 seconds- until I got a mile. Finally the maintenance guy came and somehow we got the treadmill back to life. I only had time for one more mile.
This falls into the category of doing something stupid for the streak! I told the front desk guy that this would not have been a problem for anyone else but me…
MOWC, that would have driven me mad! When I can’t get stuff to work, I can get almost frantic. (I’m the therapist in the Seinfeld episode where George can’t get his coat unzipped, and the therapist almost loses it in frustration, lol). I wonder if it had a short or something.
MOWC brings about a question. Hotel fitness centers and reliability of the equipment. I sometimes wonder how much equipment gets used, how frequently it is checked , how high on the priority list it is for repair, updates, etc.
The hotel I stayed in this weekend had two treadmills, a bike, a elliptical type piece and one more thing. Both treadmills were non-operational. So disappointing! I have to admit I contemplated like MOWC running around the perimeter of the pool and the exercise room (no one else was using either) but all together it was quite small so I settled for doing a mixed cardio workout on the stuff that WAS working. Lucky for me, no streak to keep going!
My former coach and CEO of the company in Dallas where I worked was a world-class runner. He used to say that hotel equipment COMES broken. I think there has been a huge improvement in the last 8 years or so. Many travelers simply demand that a hotel have an adequate workout facility. The higher end hotels usually do, but they can get crowded. We tend to stay at Hamptons for business and I generally can run outside, but the quality of the workout room varies with the age of the hotel. In a new hotel in Michigan in 2013 I was quite impressed with the equipment. It wasn’t extensive, but it was all new and it worked. This treadmill here (just one) is decent (might be what Bunsen has at home) but clearly something was going on with it or with their circuits this morning. The tiny room it and it’s friend the elliptical are in is not adequate. It can be frustrating if you are counting on it. I had limited time since I had to meet people for breakfast, so my options were limited.
Pilates reformer today and 30 minutes on the Cybex arc machine.
It’s in the high 20s today in my part of MA–feels like summer. Plus no snow for a few days.
I used to travel with a jumprope to combat bad hotel gym equipment.
According to the Weather Underground, it has snowed on 31 of the last 41 days. Not all with significant accumulation, but geeze.

The good news is that next week we are supposed to have 4 days in a row of 40+.
Something to be very careful about with hotel exercise equipment is the condition of the cables and attachment points on selectorized weight machines. All it takes is one frayed cable or loosened attachment bolt to really ruin your day! That’s one of the reasons I enjoy using a TRX when I travel or using Dumbbells in a hotel’s fitness room.
There are no cable machines at this hotel gym. There is a small rack of dumbbells, but you would practically be on top of the treadmill or elliptical if you really did much with them. I haven’t been that upset about all this (except for the brief panic this morning at maybe having the streak end in friggin’ Sandusky, Ohio) since I’m tapering for my half marathon on Saturday. But- it might be cancelled due to the icy conditions. I’m not doing well this season with my races.
I’ve taken those Theraband (resistance bands) with me when traveling. They’re not bad for a mini-workout, if there’s no gym.
Walking only (a couple of miles) for me today and an afternoon of hot, sweaty gardening work.
Note to self: Next time think twice before doing an hour and a half upper and lower body dumbbell routine before going out to shovel 10 inches of snow for 2 hrs. I’m such an idiot.
On one hand, I really hope it’s the last of the winter precipitation for the Philadephia region so I can finally start doing weekend outdoor rides but on the other hand, looks like I’ll finally be able to use my xc skis on Saturday!
This last snowstorm and this morning’s 7 degree temps make me seriously consider moving south for the the winter. I understand perfectly why so many people do it!
Last night driving around the neighborhood in the dark I almost ran over a runner who was wearing dark clothes and no light. There were many other runners I had to watch out for but at least they were wearing flashing lights or reflective gear. Homeowners have just given up on shoveling sidewalks so there’s no place to run but in the street. Runners are sick of treadmills and have taken over the streets! It’s a revolution!
I actually like shoveling as exercise but it’s hard on my hands, which are slightly arthritic and I’m a pianist, so that’s bad news. The good news is it’s supposed to warm up to 40s tomorrow, then even warmer this week. It IS March, right?
