This winter has just been unbelievable everywhere! I was stuck with the hotel dreadmill this morning, but I got 3.5 miles done. My half marathon tomorrow has been cancelled due to the ice and only the 5K will happen. We will all run the 5K. This is a corporate race for me, so at least it got paid for by my company. I’m not thrilled with a bitter cold 5K with some icy patches, but it’s a whole lot better than a half marathon! My weekly mileage is ruined since I had planned on that 13.1 on Saturday. Oh well. Considering the conditions and all my travel, I’ve done pretty well. This is all assuming my flight this afternoon all goes OK.
We got hammered yesterday with quite a bit of wintry mix and snow. Gym closed yesterday at 9:30 am and didn’t open today until 9:30 am so my exercise has been snow play with the pups and shoveling yesterday. Trying to add in speed and hill work this spring, so did a treadmill workout on Tuesday and Reformer on Wednesday - will be hitting the treadmill again tomorrow. In good news, we spring forward on Sunday!
“Almost The Weekend” workout at a cardio class - step, weights, core. Yeah, weekend!!!
MOfWC, glad you are not running the race. Ice and running is not a healthy combination!
Packed my running shoes but forgot the gadgets! Will have to map out the run and just call it close enough.
Did probably the last ski of the season. It was a great one, 1.5 hours of great snow, fast but not too fast. The forcast is for a warm up, I knew we were skiing on borrowed time, which is fine. It was a great season and I got my money’s worth out of my skiis this year.
Now, I am hoping the warmup is going to melt the snow on the road and not leave it an icy mess. I have a fun St. Pats day race next weekend. Which I’m not really prepared for. My SIL and I have said that we are going to run/walk it and get through it. I’m thinking that all the skiing at least has helped my cardio :).
Shovelling is brutal, MKAT. It has a way of working different muscles and puts me down for an instant nap!
I broke out the MicroSpikes for a little snow covered hill climb at Pawtuckaway State Park. Good lord, there’s a lot of snow. It was find where the snowmobiles had been but tough going everywhere else. I had to alter my planned route when I didn’t feel like swapping out for the snow shoes and breaking trail through deep snow.
Mid 20s and sunny. Good to get some fresh air.
Ran 27 minutes, did upper body weight workout with planks
Reading the brochure about the local running path… Who would have thought that walking 2.5 miles “prevents CO2 emissions” to the tune of 2.75 pounds? what a bunch of BS. What is that, compared to driving a tank with a 3 mpg rating (I’m being generous here)!
They have obviously not hiked 2.5 miles with me after one of my SuperStarch protein shakes…
Finished a TRX class today–met friends at our local General Store for coffee–decided to walk there, so I got in a 2.0 mile walk (round trip) too.
LOL, iDad. I see what you did there.
5K done and we got the nice medals from the cancelled half marathon. I ran reasonably well and pretty evenly. I’m simply not great at 5K, especially after 2 weeks of travel. 28:46 and missed 3rd in my age group by 6 seconds (I was 5th). I raced a woman with whom I compete (she’s 2 age groups older, so I should not be so proud) and got away from her in the last quarter mile and beat her by 10 seconds. It was a sunny day and no ice on the course. I parted with my polar fleece jacket before the race (thank goodness) and was fine in long sleeved Lulu top with my company team shirt on top of it). My company team won first in our division, so that was good. My husband won his age group in his first race as a 70 year old (26:32) with his fastest 5K in a few years and my daughter had a PR with 26:01 off of her triathlon training.
One gallon of gas (about 6.3 pounds) will produce around 19-20 pounds of CO2. So 2.75 pounds of CO2 = .1375 gallons, for 2.5 miles = 18 mpg.
Although, since you would never drive your car 2.5 miles for exercise, your walk is actually increasing CO2 emissions by the amount of energy it takes to walk vs. just sitting there. Hard to find numbers on that, but probably about a tenth of a pound or so per mile or less.
How much CO2 do you save pedalling the dreaded Airdyne for 5 miles? I hope it’s a lot because the global warming this winter is killing me.
It’s faster to do 5 miles on the Airdyne pushing a steady speed than doing fast and slow intervals. So, I aimed for a minimum 50 rpm and crept up to 55 rpm when I was solidly warmed up by mile 4. Makes for a nice little workout. Definitely gets the legs burning.
Nice racing for all three of you, MoWC!
With the cold front it’s cool even down here (only low 60’s–after near 90’s earlier in the week). My husband and I walked five miles today, and I did two miles of run/walk, outside since it’s not too hot. We planted more of our little veggie garden, and harvested arugula I used to make arugula/walnut/roasted garlic pesto. It’s got a nice bite, and tastes very green and healthy. Waiting for DS to arrive for spring break.
NRE, precisely. As far as gasoline equivalent of walking, it is probably not that hard to estimate those numbers. A person of average size burns roughly about 100 kcal per mile walked vs sitting for the same amount of time. One gallon of gas has 31,000 kcal (using the data from the interwebs ), so walking v sitting “burns” about 0.008 gal of gas. Simple, huh? No so easily. Most folks who are not trying to lose weight will consume 250 cal (actually, kcal) of food to compensate for the lost energy. Unless they are eating apples of a tree that grew in the wild, the amount of energy that went into the production of that extra food needs to be accounted for, too - so it is not as simple as drawing a chemical equation depicting burning of decane and doing the mass balance.
Speaking of which… Some college students already did the math for us calculating the mpg of a human:
Nice running MOWC and DOWC! 5k is my ultra marathon. 800 meters seems too long at times.
MOfWC - under 29 5K with no training and after all you have been through is FANTASTIC!!! Big kudos.
So, yay- today finished the half marathon with H (we basically ran together). It was great! did 15 minute miles and that was my goal. We both did not come in last -yay. Thanks for all the support here.
Yay!! Awesome job!
Congrats Rocky! A half marathon is a lot of miles!!
