Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

hey everyone,

nice to read about the running accomplishments - now that i am recovering from the broken knee, that pounding is not in the foreseeable future. Been swimming and weights, and walking . I have also added a new activity…dance !
Both Latin (salsa, bachata) and ballroom. I always wanted to do this, and now is the time. Low impact , and a tremendously fun challenge. Doesn’t bother the knee, thankfully.

Not up to Dancing with the Stars (which I don’t watch, lol) but its a real mental and physical challenge!

Anyone else out there dance?

Can’t dance, but finished Day of C25K Week 4! First five minute run segments and I felt like I could go further. Maybe I’ll finish this thing for once! Have a good day all.

san-dee, I wish I could dance! Coordination is not my strong suit - dancing looks like a lot of fun and a real workout! That’s great that you’ve found something else to enjoy!

After a few quick errands yesterday, I slept all day and was in bed at 9 for the night. I feel somewhat better today and managed my Pilates session which felt pretty painless. No running today. Have a good day, all!

Dancing is great exercise!

Our city had it’s signature race yesterday - it’s a take your pick - 5k, 1/2, full, relay. A big race for us, about 9000 participating. Weather was perfect - sunny and around 40 at the gun. Apparently most records fell. But check out this story about the overall woman’s winner- who broke the record - even after having to run an extra mile because she was directed (?) to take a wrong turn!!!

Samantha Bluske had not competed in a marathon before Sunday. She officially finished her first at the Glass City Marathon — and added some serious extra credit.

Bluske, an assistant cross country coach at the University of Toledo, lived a race runner’s nightmare Sunday: She took a wrong turn late in the race and found herself well off course. It was no matter. Even though she raced an extra mile on the 26.2-mile course, Bluske still won the women’s marathon by 21 seconds and set the course record by more than four minutes.

On the first trip through Wildwood Preserve Metropark, runners had to turn right, then turn left on their second run-through. A marathon worker accidentally directed Bluske right both times. After she had raced half a mile in the opposite direction, Bluske said a race official in a golf cart tracked her down and told her she was going the wrong way.

She stormed back ahead of the pack anyway, finishing in 2 hours, 47 minutes, and 20 seconds, smashing the women’s course record of 2:51:52.

I’m a little confused - they sort of make it sound like it was her fault - but the text says a marathon worker accidently directed her wrong - either way, what a story! If you are her, are you ticked off???

(I have run this race before but did not run it this year due to other family obligations)

4.91 miles on the treadmill this morning. I listened to an interesting podcast to keep from going bonkers! As is usually the case, my favorite part was being done!

abasket – if I’m that runner, I’m mostly glad/happy to finish AND win. I guess a small part of me, though, is annoyed. Sounds like it may not have been the best course layout if runners were supposed to turn right the first time and left the second time – too easy to get confused, IMO.

MNK – congrats on your first client!

Goal was to ride for one hour this morning even though forecast called for rain. Lucked out with decent weather. It was a little challenging due to wind gusts, but got it done.

Had scrambled eggs and diced ham and substituted the 3 stack with sliced tomatoes at my favorite pancake house afterwards. Could really go back to bed for a nap for some reason. Might give into that temptation after I walk the dog and take a hot shower.

Yes- you are NOT happy with a long or inaccurate course. You pace yourself for a certain distance, and you don’t want surprises! Hopefully she was able to be a little bit gracious since she won! Ugh.

Running that extra mile cost her close to 7 minutes. If her time with the extra loop
was 2:47, correct me if I’m wrong, she was close to the B cut!!!

^^^ Well, that would be a crying shame if she was looking for that option and loses out because of the mile! Can you imagine - running your first marathon and breaking the course record?!

Three mile jaunt around the neighborhood and ALMOST one spill of…me! I have never fallen while running, but I was actually slowing down to stop and cross a street - almost to a stop - when I stumbled. In that literal second, it’s funny what goes through your mind- my mind thought “save the iPhone in your hand at all costs!!!” It was safe and so was I.

What was ALMOST funny about this was that on the run I was thinking about the different terrains that people run on. I mostly run somewhere right from my house. So neighborhood runs of sorts. I PREFER running in the roads if I can, but I do often have to do some sidewalk running - which is ok - but I think sidewalks seems to slow me down somehow. Today I also ran along a ravine of sorts in our neighborhood - and it has some gravel/dirt on the edge where I was running - I’m not always the best on that. Sometimes I go to a park, in the summer I do run on the beach - which is REALLY hard because it can be rocky and too soft.

So question: what is your % breakdown of where you walk/run/bike??? In your neighborhood? Get in the car and go to a park? A trail nearby? Sidewalks, roads, bike path??? Indoor or outdoor??

I’m probably 90% out the back door and in the neighborhood. 10% other places.
Probably 50/50 on the sidewalks/roads. All walking on the sidewalks or a park about once a week.

I have always run/walked in my neighborhood. There’s a boulevard less than 2 blocks from my house with a dirt strip down the middle where I always walk. My former neighborhood had a paved rec path about 3 blocks from my house. I’ve decided that living with a 10-minute walk of a rec path is a priority for me – it was one of the criteria for the house we bought a few years ago, and for any future houses.

Biking is different. I do bike in my neighborhood (said boulevard also has a dedicated bike lane), but more often we’ll load the bikes in the car and go to a bike path. We have several within a 15 minute drive of our house.

“So question: what is your % breakdown of where you walk/run/bike??? In your neighborhood? Get in the car and go to a park? A trail nearby? Sidewalks, roads, bike path??? Indoor or outdoor??”

Boring I know, but I am a treadmill person.

I’m probably 70% running from my house, 25% either a park path or from work and 5% dreadmill. Dreadmill increases in cold or bad weather. I AM a faller, so don’t run many trails.

Treadmill when it rains or when I have no time to go to the park in the middle of the week. Neighborhood streets (25 mph traffic, dogs, and occasionally horses - yeah, I know, it is a village) for distances up to 5-6 miles. Anything longer - we hop in the car and drive to the local park where I can run on the riverfront trail.

Winter - 90% treadmill/10% indoor track
Spring - 25% streets/25% trails/25% treadmill/25% outdoor track
Summer - 40% outdoor track/30% trails/30% streets
Fall - 50% Trails/25% outdoor track/25% streets

100% outside (one of the benefits of living in S.CA  ) 50% is out the front door, the rest is a mix of hilly trails & beach. My neighborhood is very hilly, so when I want to run a flat course, I head to the beach.

Most of the time I drive 5 minutes to the bike path and run there. I think it’s easier on my knees than the street to run on. I have nice but noisy neighbors and when I run in the neighborhood people come out to talk to me. Or comment and I’m self conscious so I’ll drive a short way. Also my house beckonings me and I run longer when I drive there

I used to drive to a trail and run that and sometimes I still do but mostly I run on the bike paths. I have 2 staging areas that I like best so I’ll drive to ones of those.

I have a treadmill but ugh! Will do sometimes but this winter I skiied instead. It was fun but did not put me in running condition hence the shin splints I have been suffering with.

Most of the time I run on the road. I used to run from my neighborhood, but now drive to meet my running group. When I first started running, it was treadmill or in a small park near my home - I was afraid I’d run out and couldn’t run back! I think the treadmill will be useful for some speed workouts as I don’t have easy access to a track.

Still feeling pretty punk this morning. I have TRX tonight so hopefully will be feeling better for that.

I drive to biking trails. When I want to do a traditional workout, I go to the fitness center that is provided by my HOA. It’s pretty nice. A lot of developments these days have community pools, but we don’t. It would be nice to have an option to swim some laps in the summer, but I can live with just the fitness center.

I am really lucky - we have a trail at the end of our street. It’s a converted rail trail and goes for 30 miles with lots of other trails branching off it. They have really improved the trail system in our town and the neighboring town over the last 5-10 years. So I run from our house and go whichever way on the trail that I feel like. With all the interconnecting trails I can make the run as long as I want and some options are more hilly than others. We also bike on the same trail and love to ride down 10 miles to a neighborhood with fun restaurants. The dog is walked on the trail every day. My trail is the reason I never want to move, even though we really should downsize.

Sabaray-sorry you’re still feeling lousy. I hope you’re better for your TRX class tonight. I am so impressed with how you did in your half on Saturday when you couldn’t breathe and were battling ice pellets. What a dedicated runner!

Michael-I hope the training session with your first client went well last night!
