@C3Baker, wow, that would be paradise to me. You are so lucky!
Agreed @C3Baker, that sounds ideal! Let me know when a house in the neighborhood is up for sale.
Sounds like we all have a mix. And, we all avoid the treadmill when possible. I always feel like trails are harder on my knees/legs because they are uneven and I don’t feel as balanced.
I don’t run, but I do a fair amount of walking. For the last 12years, I’ve been doing a charity walk of 60 miles over 3 days–recent years I’ve been on a team and “only” walked 20 miles in one day. I’ll do that again this year. I walk outside about 70% of the time when training for this walk–rest on a treadmill. I live in a small town so the roads aren’t that crowded and I’m a few miles from a rail trail. When not training for the charity walk, I do more walking on the treadmill–about 70%.
Workout today: weights and cardio work with my trainer and 40 minutes on the Cybex Arc.
Ran 3 miles for the second time ever today. Planning to do 2 miles on Thursday, then run my first 5K on Saturday. I ran a loop course today, rather than my usual out & back on the same route & found the loop much more satisfying somehow!
Way to go, Gertrude!
Gertrude, sounds like you are READY! Yeah, you will probably discover that variety is the spice of life in running!
Be sure and let us know how the 5k goes - focus on the energy around you, the excitement and the FUN of participating!
MOWC changed her avatar, nice! Florida?
3 mile run. I’m going out of town tomorrow to visit my mother, bringing my running gear. And my golf clubs. Her subdivision is hilly so I guess I’ll do hill repeats.
Yes! I took that picture from the Ritz on Amelia Island on Thursday.
I ran 3 miles this morning on the treadmill. I got up late and it was windy outside, so in my new wimpiness I stayed in! I am leaving for another, more difficult trip tomorrow and will be trying to get my running in in the face of a demanding work schedule and a talk I have to give. Then I have to help WildChild and girlfriend with their move to the Poconos. I won’t be home until next Tuesday night.
Michael- if you are in Center City anytime Thurs or Friday, let me know and maybe we can meet up!
MOWC, I will be in the office on Friday. Have a meeting from 10-12 but then I’m generally free. It would be great if we could meet up! Lunch perhaps?
I have a really quiet, really hilly neighborhood right out my back door, so I walk there for a short workout (such as this afternoon). It’s all paved streets, but zero traffic except for a few hundred yards on a 45 mph two lane road to and from the neighborhood. I’ve got a 5K loop that climbs to the highest point at the halfway mark, although all of if is up and down.
I’ve got a selection of nice hiking trails that range from 15 minutes away to 30 minutes away to a couple hours away. Just depends on schedule and weather.
I had a good 5 mile run last night and I’m feeling pretty good about the half marathon on Saturday. We are starting on a major patio/deck renovation and so I have also been doing a lot of shoveling rock. That is hard work! I’ll probably do another hour of moving rock tonight and then put it on hold until after Saturday.
Gertrude-great job with the run. I’ll bet you will love the 5K on Saturday!
Bromfield-that charity walk sounds pretty cool. I hope the weather is nice for your leg of the event.
Gertrude, good luck Saturday! I’m still plugging away on the treadmill at the early stages of C25K. Weather has improved sufficiently for me to head to the school track for the next phase. I’m actually really concerned about heading out on the roads given the uneven pavement and unforgiving cement/blacktop. My knees have been wonky for so long that I’m nervous about taking that next step (no pun intended!) Since they fixed the flap tear of the meniscus in my right knee, that’s feeling good, but there’s one lurking in my left knee as well. I hope to avoid surgery on that one, but I just don’t know what my limits will be in terms of hitting the pavements. I’ve completed today’s workout and look forward to enjoying this beautiful day with some friends who are taking me to lunch for my birthday, which is tomorrow. Here in the NYC area it’s finally spring!! And as my close friend recently said of her birthday…welcome to late middle age!!
Good luck @runnersmom! I will be thinking of you when you hit week 5 - that was a biggie for me psychologically, but once past it, what a great feeling! I ran 3 miles again yesterday & felt good, so no real fear that I won’t be able to run the whole 5k. Should be a lot of fun! My DH will come along to cheer me along - very kind of him to get up at 4:30 AM & come along when he doesn’t have to.
i’m thinking of joining a local marathon/half-marathon training group. I have no real interest in the Marathon, but the thought of doing a Half is intriguing. I’m turning 50 next year & that seems like a cool way to march into that phase of my life…
I have an update for the old and broken among us: I received my first PRP/ stem cell injection this week. So far so good. Results have exceeded my expectations. Here is my story for anyone’s help.
I am in my mid fifties and have arthritis in my left hip, probably some in the right hip as well. DKY. I suspect a congenital abnormality. My mom had arthritis in her knees and hips starting in her thirties. I was hyper mobile as a young adult. This body has been used hard: I have run fifty marathons and completed dozens of triathlons from sprint to half ironman distance. As a young woman I did lots of dance and high impact aerobics and, well, pretty much anything and everything. I am not a small woman, built more like a swimmer or sprinter than a distance runner. Starting having trouble about four years ago after NEVER and I mean NEVER being injured or having any problems. My sports med doc initially found nothing seriously wrong with me (those clinical tests where they twist and turn you) but when I insisted he took x rays and told me I had arthritis. He said there wasn’t much being done with hips, in contrast to knees where there are lots of options. He offered artificial synovial fluid injections but noted they weren’t covered by insurance. I went to PT and carried on as best I could.
Fast forward to this year. I read on a triathlon message board about older folks getting PRP/stem cell shots and SOME people getting great outcomes. It isn’t covered by insurance and is very expensive. A little googling revealed I could get it where I live in Texas. So I went.
The procedure is done by an interventional radiologist (or in some cases a rheumatologist who took special classes). It is quick and not that painful. I had four injections: lidocaine, contrast (to make sure the juice hit the right spot), my spun plasma, and stem cells. There was an unpleasant sensation of pressure as the joint capsule filled, but no real pain. I was a little sore afterwards, but on the whole felt fine. You can’t take NSAIDS for a week before or after----the inflammatory process is desirable. Most people report feeling worse before they slowly feel better. I felt a little worse, but already feel better, despite not being able to take anything.
Right now my bad hip feels better than my good hip. I will keep you posted.
I enjoy living vicariously through you runners. I have stopped running and am going to focus on other activities for awhile and see how different I feel in a few weeks. This is probably just a stop gap measure for me. I don’t expect to return to full force. But if I can feel better, do more of what I love to do, maybe run two miles (!) a few times a week, I would be delighted.
@Lizardly, wow, how interesting. Glad you are feeling better and of course will want to hear periodic updates.
Good luck!
@Lizardly, you have a GREAT attitude. We may all find ourself in the position one day to not be able to do “as much” - you set a great example of patience, trial and error and making do with that you are able to do. Kudos.
Spin class today. For some reason, I’m exhausted! The weather is good though so now that I’m home, need to carve out some yard work time.
Couldn’t believe it was 48 degrees in Dallas this morning when I got to the bike trail at sunrise. Did an hour and certainly warmed up pretty quickly, though.
Hope to go 1 and 1/2 hours tomorrow.
Forgot to post yesterday, which was a cardio + weights day. Then I increased my daily step count significantly by walking all over many different stores doing errands in preparation for moving to the beach for the summer. (A term I use loosely since it’s still pretty far from anything resembling summer weather around here!)
Today I ran 5.06 miles on the treadmill.
Very interesting, Lizardly.
Basement for me. 60 degrees with my little space heater, enough to get a little sweaty doing my dynamic warmup/FMS stuff, core, and three sets of strength training.
Listened to a podcast with Jordan Spieth’s trainer talking about the workouts they did leading up to the Masters and spending Masters week in Augusta with Spieth.
Very familiar stuff to me on the workouts, although the trainer spoke in fitness trainer physio gobbeldy-gook instead of actually describing the exercises in English. I knew enough of the buzzwords to follow along, but still.
His cardio intervals the week before the Masters were 45 seconds on, 15 second rests, with 90 seconds between sets. That’s pretty intense cardio.
Apologies for, once again, not being the good nutrition example on this thread, but I ended my 6 mile run this morning at Dunkin Donuts- and had remembered to bring money and credit card on the run. Even on a business trip, I’m NOT paying what the Ritz charges for breakfast! So- I was at 6.1 and wanted to run 6.2, but I called it when I got to Dunkin and walked back to the hotel with my donuts and iced tea.
As for the run- terrible first mile down Chestnut Street in Center City Philadelphia dodging people (most with headphones) and bikes until I got to the Schuylkill River trail, which was nice. 50 degrees and nice.
