We haven’t had any five pound parties in a while, KMC…I’ll get you a nifty light up accessory! I am not above bribes!

abasket- I LOVE Tim Horton’s or “Tim’s” as we used to say when I traveled to Canada or Maine. I would love to have one locally, but then the mystique would be gone. I am not in love with Dunkin- it’s just the only option where I live now when I need a donut fix (we do have a Krispy, but not as convenient). I do try to avoid donuts, but my old doggie loves donut holes, so there’s that…

Bunsen will relate- I had to be at a 7am breakfast and wasn’t comfortable running outside here in center city Phila as early as I would have needed to (and, besides, I would have barely gotten past the bad part in town before hitting the path and needing to go back), so I went to the dreadmill in the gym here at the Ritz. The room was warm and stuffy and I was miserable. I almost bagged it after a mile. The ceilings were low. Equipment was decent- Precor treadmills with individual screens, but the tvs were all cable channels with no local stations. I managed my 3.1 miles, but I sure wanted to quit. I’ll get back outside tomorrow meeting.

Be jealous, all. Michael and I are meeting for coffee this afternoon.

@MomofWildChild - if you’re in Philly, the best donut I’ve ever had was from Beiler’s Bakery in the Reading Terminal Market. Pulled out of the fryer minutes before & still warm. Just sayin…

omg, I’m salivating at all the donut talk. “Timmy’s” as we call it back home, is a favorite not only for donuts, but they make great soup on the go if you need a quick lunch. My dad, even after his stroke, loved soup and a chicken salad sandwich from Timmy’s. Finished Week 4 today and a little nervous moving into week 5, with the first 20 minute run come Day 3. My knees feel great, but some pain in my right foot has me worrying a little. My son is running the Brooklyn 1/2 on the 16th and I’m hoping to get in a run out at Coney Island while waiting for him to finish. Of course the bloody race starts at 7am, so we’ll have to be out there by 8:30 am (probably about an hour from home) since he’s shooting for a 1:30-45 half, I think. But, since I’ve done the first part of C25K on the treadmill, I think I’ll be ready to head outside by then. I know you all hate the bloody thing, but the level surface and speed control are making this doable for me. And since I’m a playlist novice, having the tv to distract me works wonders.

I am not a donut person. But not to worry, there are plenty of bad-for-me, carbohydrate rich foods that I love. Yesterday I ate too much Portuguese sweetbread (one of my downfalls) and crackers and chocolate. At least the chocolate was dark chocolate. It wasn’t a good day.

Runnersmom- I am not currently running, but I started C25K in 2012 and have run about a dozen 5K’s since then. Mine weren’t “serious” 5K’s - Color Runs and the like - and I am slower than molasses - but it’s still VERY worthwhile. I agree with you - the level surface and speed control and TV works wonders. If I went outside - let’s be honest - I’d just drop down to a walk, whereas the treadmill movement kept me going. It was also helpful to me to know that I was running at 5.0 mph or 5.5 mph or whatever. I am planning to re-start it at some point and I think you have nothing to apologize for in using a treadmill!

Those of you who are weightlifting / strength people - Both my pilates person and my weight/ strength guy have noted this about me - I have very strong / developed deltoids and upper pectoral muscles – my upper trapezoids are strong and overdeveloped - my middle / lower trapezoids are less developed. Because of this, I can lift pretty much anything - I’m very strong for a girl, mostly because my shoulders take over. Where I struggle with is anything requiring me to put my arms / hands behind my back - for example, I couldn’t do that thing where you reach from behind, over your shoulder with one hand and from below with the other, or in yoga I couldn’t put my hands in a prayer position behind my back. MichaelnKat and i-Dad in particular, do you have any suggestions for ways of working on this?

Did an hour on the bike, then sat in a horrible traffic problem for over an hour on the way home (should take only about 20-25 minutes, going against rush hour), which almost caused my relaxed after-workout attitude to evaporate completely. Grrr…

Bad time of year for hiking. Basement is at its least hospitable (and my cold tolerance is low). So that means Airdyne season as my quickie workout.

MOWC - Have fun with Michael! So nice you get to meet up!

I tore my ACL skiing a six weeks ago… today, I begin physical therapy. Excited – want to hike this summer and get back to skiing, eventually – but also scared. I’m not into pain; does that make me a bad person?

Oh my goodness, all this donut talk! I remember hitting up a Dunkin Donuts in Singapore in the early 80s. Hotel breakfasts were so ridiculously priced that the DD was such a bargain. I still have the receipt from there in a scrapbook, it said “Dunkin Donuts Far East Plaza - It’s worth the trip”. Haha, that was a pretty long trip for a donut.

I really wish we had Tim Hortons around here. I love their salt bagels. Good bagels can be a real downfall for me. Now I want to go to New York City…

Tomorrow is the half marathon and I am really looking forward to it. Isn’t that strange? All the previous ones I have been full of nervous dread, but I am excited for tomorrow! The weather forecast is really good also.

MOWC and Michael-I hope you’re having a great time at lunch!

Sabaray-sorry to hear that the cold is still bothering you. That thing is really hanging on! I sure hope you are feeling better for the weekend.

CBBBlinker-have a great trip moving out to the beach. Sounds wonderful! Are you retired to be able to move out there?

runnersmom-you’re making great progress on the C25K. I remember having to repeat weeks a few times when I went through it. Week 5 is a big hurdle, but really if you’ve mastered week 4, you’ll be fine. It’s a real feeling of accomplishment when you complete that 20 minute run.

katliamom, that does not make you a bad person in the least! I hope the PT is helpful.

C3Baker, hope your half goes well tomorrow!

I was momentarily excited - Oiselle is having a “sale on sale” - extra 25% off. If you are interested in the “Yeti” - it is available.

" I’m not into pain; does that make me a bad person?"

Absolutely not! It makes you a smart person.

C3Baker, have a fun half!

Mayhem is in the plans for our downtown area… Saw the anarchists’ flyers on bus stops advertising “non-family friendly events” downtown. A couple of years ago, the entire block of 6th street south of Nordie’s lost its windows. So, I have no idea what time I will get back… At least the weather is nice.

It was great to see Michael. We had hot chocolate at Starbucks and talked about all of you!

Pilates this morning - then had a 1.5 hour conference call where I knew I didn’t need to be near a computer, so I walked around my neighborhood - then a 2 hr bike ride with H.

Pizzagirl, tough to tell without seeing you but here’s a couple of thoughts. People with very developed pecs, upper trapezius and anterior deltoids can end up with a load of shoulder protraction ie your shoulders are in a forward rounded position due to tight pecs and anterior shoulder capsule. That can also be coupled with scapular elevation, protraction and winging due the shortness of the anterior muscles and the relative weakness in your scapular musculature. All of that would make the behind the back arm movements very difficult to achieve. You need to do exercises to stretch your pecs and shoulder capsule/rotator cuff musculature and also work to strengthen your scapular muscles so that they can support scapular depression and retraction. If you tell your Pilates instructor and personal trainer that you need to work on “proximal stability of the scapular thoracic region and distal mobility of the glenohumeral joint”, they should be able to give you a load of exercises to accomplish this. If not, send me a pm with your email and I will send you pictures and instructions of suitable exercises.

It was great to meet MOWC in person and chat about our kids, how they still make us nuts and how very few people understand what drives us lol. And yes, we did splurge with some hot chocolate but it was the small, skim milk no whip cream variety so that we wouldn’t feel too guilty ;).

That’s a perfect description - my shoulders are rounded and forward (seems natural to me, but when they point it out in comparison to them I see it). My shoulder blades don’t stick out though. They’re also having me do an exercise lying on a foam roller where I do the snow angels move on the floor. Very helpful-thank you again and glad you enjoyed meeting MOWC!

Best of luck on the race tomorrow C3Baker!

I love reading about CC people getting together - how fun!

Man, I’ll trade all our Tim Horton’s for one of something better - just not my thing!

No donuts tonight, but just ate a late dinner killer salad after an evening that included one long flower bed turned over and weeded and raked out, a quick run and then a dusk walk with H and pup.

I ended up grabbing a cabbage and mushroom piroshki before my mad scramble out of the downtown! My justifications for the unhealthy food are: (1) I ran like a bat out of hell trying to make the bus and (2) cabbage and mushrooms have no calories, so the small amount of dough around them was ok to eat, especially when this was both lunch and dinner.

MOfWC, so cool you got to meet Michael!

(And I totally hear you on the issue of fancy hotels’ fitness rooms being small and stuffy!)
