Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Pizzagirl, the fact that your shoulder blades aren’t “winging” is certainly a plus. Even so, I would bet that you have scapular elevation and protraction. One of the consequences of the round shoulderness you describe is that as the pecs and other anterior muscles shorten over time due to the postural misalignments, your parascapular muscles lengthen. This causes the components of the muscle fibers to become misaligned leading to weakness of the contractile ability of those muscles. So basically, what you want to do is work at stretching and lengthening the muscle fibers “up front” while strengthening the contractile functioning of the parascapular muscles. Over time, the muscle fibers front and back will return to normal lengths resulting in much improved scapular and shoulder joint positioning.

Temperatures in mid 70s today. I’ve run 6 days in a row. Think I might head out on the road bike for the first time this year. I keep thinking how warm temp DRAMATICALLY affects both my workout motivation and performance. I’m envious of the year round warm weather folks.

Well, after a week of poor eating habits, I gained 2 pounds. Silly me, forgot that I have a reunion in 3 weeks. Goal 1 is to stop eating poorly; Goal 2 to make sure I don’t gain any more; Goal 3 to shed those 2 pounds. Time to open my food recording app on the phone!

Michael and I were talking about how long this thread/group has been at it and what a great group of folks we have on here. Hats off to sabaray for getting us started.

8.2 miles on the Schuylkill River trail in Phila this morning. It only takes 1/2 mile to get to it from my son’s apartment and it’s on nicer streets than I had from the Ritz. Lots of college crew teams out on the river, so it was pretty neat. Now we have a horrific day of packing up their apartment for tomorrow’s move to the Poconos.

Finally got out to run this morning - 6.25 easy miles but incorporated some big hills. Feeling better this am so I think the worst is behind me.

My project for today is a pantry clean-up. Mr. Sabaray has been complaining we have lots of ingredients but nothing to eat. We will see if that holds true once I reorganize.

I am looking forward to a big brunch out next weekend so will have to be extra good this week with the diet! I just need to be good, period.

Enjoy the packing, MOWC! Jealous of your run.

My pantry could use a going over as well. But it’s 70 degrees out and that means I’m going to be OUT! No inside activities on my plate today! The amount of outdoor work to do is overwhelming though…!

Gertrude- we just scored some donuts from Beiler’s at the Reading Terminal Market for tomorrow morning. Ate a hoagie and a Guinness Whoopee Pie for lunch there.

Hot yoga flow class (yesterday) followed by a Relax and Restore class–first time I’ve done two yoga classes in one day. Second was like a Yin yoga class–we held a couple of poses for 3-5 minutes. Today was Pilates reformer. Was going to walk because it’s a beautiful day here, but I decided to help my H with more gardening work. We’re planting tons of greens (spinach, chard, kale, and lettuces).

Fun that you guys (MOWC and M&K) got together in Philly!

Apropos of MOWC’s comment, we really do have such an interesting broad array of participants on this board. Runners, cyclists, weight lifters, yogis, “seniors”, “youngsters”, new, life long fitness junkies, culinary magi, exercise fashionistas, all with their own perspectives and knowledge, all sharing their journey to fitness. And the coolest thing is that everyone is welcomed and appreciated for what they bring to this board, whether interesting info or just their stories. There’s quite a history of individual growth and accomplishment buried in the pages of this thread!

@MomofWildChild - Excellent - I hope they live up to the hype I gave them!!

Great morning here - I ran my 5K in really good time, ran the whole way & felt good the whole way. It’s SO much more fun to run with a crowd, music, exciting vibe in the air. Today I’ll celebrate graduating from the Couch to 5K program. Tomorrow, I begin the 5K to 10K program. Wee Ha!

No doubt! This is a thread I am really fond of, thanks in no small part to the great participants we have here who’ve really kept it alive, in particular iDad. Nice to have an overwhelmingly positive thread to come to each day, but we’ve got to stop talking about donuts!

Way to go, Gertrude! Glad it went well.

Yay Gertrude!

I went all weekend warrior - strength for 1 hr, then a 2hr bike ride with h (tandem), and a hot yoga. Meeting a girlfriend tomorrow to walk and yack.

Gertrude! Congrats from a C25k grad.

24 mile bike ride today. Some of it against headwinds which I detest. Good first ride for 2015. PizzaGirl - saw 3 tandems out today. Who’s sitting in the front seat on your rides? Seems like tandem riding requires a lot of trust.

I’m finally going to have to change to a spring avatar. Enjoyed warm (65 degrees) sunny weather this afternoon with a second day in a row of hilly 5k walk. Might even have to do a little hiking this week (the weather has not been calling me out to mud trails!)

Ohiopublic - we don’t know exactly how far the trail is but we estimate 25-30 miles. We have a prairie path in one direction that winds through various suburbs, and a trail to Brookfield Zoo in the other. H is in front and I’m in the back. I didn’t learn to ride a bike til I was 20 (long story) and I am skittish on roads so this is the perfect solution. If I get freaked out on roads I just stare at his back!

My husband has a tandem that he has had forever (since way before we met). We tried riding it many years ago. I hated it. Absolutely HATED it! I was a good cyclist back then, but he could spin faster than me and I felt like my feet were just spinning around without my doing anything. I had no control and was basically staring at his back. It wasn’t for me. One time our friend Barry and I got on it- Barry in the front- while Ken drove our sag car. Barry and I could not get the darn thing started up hill and ran off into a ditch. I’m not a tandem person. Turning it is like turning a semi.

There are tandems that have independent crank systems for the 2 riders to eliminate the stoker getting dragged along at the captain’s cadence but these present their own unique issues. A guy I know used to ride a recumbent tandem with independent crank systems with his wife. He often wondered why he seemed to be working so hard all the time. One day, his cycling companions fessed up to what had been a very well kept secret. His wife, who like MOWC really didn’t enjoy riding the tandem, was routinely taking advantage of a recumbent with independent cranks. As her husband was working his butt off, she was relaxing in the back reading a book, usually just resting her legs in the pedals!

Tandems, lol! Some of you may recall the incident at Terabike when McH and I tried out a fast, tandem recumbent together…the salesgirl watched us and commented on our return that tandem riding wasn’t for everyone

There was much ducking and yelling and near crashing. Mcson was literally rolling on the ground laughing. We were not, as the IChing would say “like two ends of a board at sea”

In other news, I cranked up the pool heater yesterday and had my first aquajog of the season! Woohoo!

Shhhhhh, you’ll blow my secret, lol.
