^^^Sounds amazing!
A climbing rope? Oh my.
Runnersmom - LOL - guess I can’t make a career change that fast! Oh well - hopefully we’ll have nice weather for you.
I’m feeling much better - I can still feel a “twang” in my one hip/groin tendon, but it doesn’t bother me while running the 3-minute stretches we’ve been doing. @BunsenBurner - I’ve been meaning to tell you that I’ve been doing the strengthening exercised you sent me most evenings & I think they are helping quite a bit!
Glad to hear that your hip is getting better, Gertrude! Knocking on wood!
3.5 miles. Phew… Dripping buckets of sweat - it is 75 degrees still! My tomato plants are really digging this weather.
Did a yin yoga class today (it’s one where you hold a pose for 3-5 minutes–for some poses the time goes by quickly, for others, it’s agonizingly long. Walked home from the studio afterwards (2.0 miles).
I have a question for the racers–is it kosher to enter a race and walk? The information on the race website talks about all levels–racers, joggers, casual walkers. I’m a pretty fast walker (13-14 minutes for a mile), so the organizers wouldn’t be waiting forever for me to come in; plus, it’s a short race (5K).
I have wondered the same thing as Bromfield2. I’m a walker, not a runner, but have always thought about entering a 5K for the fun. Are there many walkers in these 5K races?
Week 3 of habit changing. Bought an unlimited yoga pass last night and plan to start going 3x per week instead of 2. (that’s mostly a time issue as I love yoga). Still run/walking on the treadmill. Was out of town part of the weekend and did not keep up the food log while I traveled. I am only down 1 pound, which is a little disappointing, but plan to continue.
D tells me she can drop 2-3 pounds if she cuts back eating for a few days. Those days are clearly gone for me. Ah, youth!
You absolutely can walk if that’s what you want to do Bromfield2 and Packer. Lots of people do.
SIL and I went for a 2+ hour walk, it was really humid and I didn’t know I could sweat that much walking! Both of us usually run and were surprised how much the walk took out of us. As it’s been a long time since we’ve done that walk.
Then we went for an amazing dinner and ate way more than we burned walking! We were starving.
Yep, there’s always tons of walkers in the races I’ve done. It makes for a great morning to walk with a friend or two in a fun atmosphere like that.
The class I did on Saturday is a combo yoga/pilates (alternating segments) - I find the yoga to be extremely challenging. I’m like you, FallGirl - I wish I had more time for those types of workouts so I would get better at it.
Lots of folks I know walk in our local races. They seem to enjoy it more than the runners do!
Resumed my climbs up Kilimanjaro this morning on the elliptical. That worked well for cross training last time, so why not?
I’ll be at my 5K with my partners and while 2 of us plan to run, the other 3 will be walking…my understanding is that as long as you can walk the course in whatever the time limit is, you are more than welcome! @fallgirl, I’m there with you. It seems like every pound takes exponentially more time to lose now that I’ve reached “late middle age” as my close friend euphemistically named the decade between 55-65! I’ve been working on the first 5 pounds for almost 6 weeks now, but I’m almost there. At this age, I think the prospect of breaking certain thresholds is what keeps me thinking about what I put in my body. I try to focus on good food, but I don’t deprive myself completely. It’s working (along with the increased exercise, of course)…slowly!
It’s taken me 6 months to lose 10 lbs. So just over a pound a month. But really there’s no rush. I feel like this weight loss is the result of a lifestyle change & will be permanent (as long as I can maintain the new lifestyle). I’m definitely at a plateau now, so I need to ramp up somewhere if I want to lose more. I’d love to go down another 5 lbs!
BTW, I bought a Groupon for a series of PIlates classes - what fun! I love the reformer machines. It’s very expensive though, outside the groupon deal.
Never underestimate the power of a good walk!
My walking pace is right at 14 minute/mile. My running pace is 10-10:30 minute/mile. Clearly I can run farther faster to get mileage in, but a decently fast pace brings a great workout!
Gertrude, does your studio offer any mat classes? Those are usually more affordable - I do a private session during the week and then add a mat or TRX class during the week. It has really helped with my core strength.
You guys are fast walkers. When I’m walking I’m usually trailing 150 pounds of Labrador - not aerobic, but definitely some strength training.
How are you doing today, MOWC?
Many racers are at least 25-30% walkers. People walk half marathons and marathons! Just make sure you line up in the back or at your expected pace and not on the front line where you will interfere with runners trying to get started fast. You will love walking 5Ks.
I walked 3 miles this morning. I am not a fast walker and never have been. I’m deliberately not trying to push these walks since I want to stay smooth without a lot of jostling. At my best I used to be able to walk in the 15s. Today was in the 18s. It’s really hot and humid, so walking was just fine. I get bored, though, even with music. I’m sure I was a sight- staring down at my feet to keep my head down for my eye recovery, dressed in my cute Lulu green and yellow skirt from last year and singing along to “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother.”
I’m doing OK, sabaray. Thanks. I’m gradually starting to see shapes and colors out of the eye as the gas bubble shrinks. My good eye gets tired by the end of the day. I haven’t been in a car since last Thursday morning. I am getting a lot of work done and still think I’m better off working at home for now. I have a good setup.
My pup walk is multiple times slower! Walk 10 steps, pee. Walk 10 steps, sniff. Walk ten steps…you get the picture!
Which is why while I enjoy pup walks, I also need to only walk MYSELF sometimes!!!
Clicked on one of those “infomercial” articles on a website touting “2 exercises that middle agers should avoid”.
The article was from a weight loss supplement company pushing its pills. The two exercises to avoid? Cardio and yoga! Just take a pill and bypass that bothersome exercising!
^^^ That’s awful!
Hoping for one quick run in the morning before loading the suitcase and heading on vacation wear I plan to enjoy lots of walking and daily short runs in the south of France!!! It’s a girls trip - my 81 year old mom, myself and my two girls 26 and 18 - we are fortunate to have family to stay with in Marseille and Cassis and will be taking a short trip in the middle to Paris (my mom will stay behind for that one). Looking forward to some different running scenery!
And lots of figs, stinky cheese, pastries, fresh produce and whatever else there is to offer!
Hope to check in a time or two when wee-fee is available.
A short run for me this morning.
Have a good trip, Abasket!
Found a long lost Jackson Five/Michael Jackson playlist on my iphone this morning and ended up riding 1.5 hours instead my of my planned hour. Such great songs.
