Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Reporting in that I had step 3 out of 4 of my annual physical today! So I’ve completed the routine exam, labs and today, dexascan. Left to go…colonoscopy. Need to schedule it. Put the pressure on me. Age 55 and haven’t had one. Goal to complete it this month. Then back to the doc to discuss all results.

Good luck, abasket!! I have to schedule my mammogram… Have not been very enthused about that.

18 holes of golf, walking. My game was MUCH better today, so I’m happy about that.

Sunday I noticed a bump on my left upper shin. Thought I’d banged into something, but yesterday I realized it’s sort of a squishy lump under the skin. It doesn’t hurt, but it’s somewhat odd.

Squishy lump? Sometimes, by some unknown mechanism, insect bites trigger formation of such benighn growths. If it bothers you, do check it out with your Pcp or dermatologist.

Glad to hear your golf game is looking better! Practice is the mother of success.

Worked a full day yesterday, then trained a client at 6:30 and another at 7:30, then did my own workout at 9:00 and dinner at 10:30. My day job is starting to interfere with my priorities! Did a training ride with Sturdy Girls tonight. Nine progressive high intensity intervals. Only 20 miles but relentless. Designed to simulate chasing down a break away and sprinting to a finish. So much hurt, but so much fun :).

New picture of my 95% completed playground. 14 ft long monkey bars, 12 ft high cargo net with ladder on opposite side and 12 ft high climbing rope. 6 1/2 and 8 ft high pull up bars. Rings and battle ropes to be added within a week. I’m so excited.

Gotta love it - an adult male with his own version of a backyard playground.

Ran my favorite route tonight - listening to Hilary Clinton’s campaign playlist on Spotify! Hillary, me and JLo running and singing “Let’s Get Loud!” HAHA

I had a good 5.3 mile run this morning. Not sure if I’m going to run tomorrow morning or not, I guess I’ll see what I feel like then.

BB-I can certainly understand cutting your long run short this Saturday if you’ll be traveling. Aren’t you supposed to start to taper soon anyway? Or maybe I don’t remember the timing for your marathon correctly.

abasket-get that colonoscopy scheduled! I’m sure you’ve heard all kinds of stories of why you should do it and you’re just procrastinating. But I’ll add my story anyway. I lost my 58 year old cousin to colon cancer two years ago. Everyone in my family dies young of some kind of cancer, but Linda was the oldest cousin and the first in our generation to get cancer. Everyone wishes she had gotten regular screening when she should have, but wishes don’t change reality. Make the call, get the appointment. End of nag.

Michael-wow, that playground looks and sounds so fun! Who wants a day job when you could stay home and play everyday?!

abasket, there are those who would dispute that I’m an “adult”. And on another note, yes, get that colonoscopy. As much as everyone grumbles about it, it really is such an easy procedure.

C3Baker, can’t quit the day job yet, gotta pay for all these toys first!

abasket, get the colonoscopy. The anticipation and the prep is the worst part but then it will be over for 10 years!

Michael, next time MOWC heads your way I’m hitching a ride to come try the playground. And have a training session!

Off to Pilates this morning. Have a good day, all!

Yes! We’ll have a training session with Michael. Sounds like business is picking up.

30 minute run. I felt like going longer, but decided to stick to the plan.

That’s not necessarily true. If you have a polyp, depending on what kind, you may have to repeat your colonoscopy in 5 years or even fewer. I got a 2 year ticket, which is coming up in October.

But DO get your colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of the few cancers we can prevent in susceptible individuals. Don’t be like my husband; had he gone when he should have, he would have saved himself some major hell.

Of course you are absolutely correct Nrdsb4. That was simply the optimist in me encouraging abasket to get scheduled. I prefer to present the positive or best possible outcome to my layman’s knowledge when there’s no reason to think it will be anything but normal. Hopefully I’ve phrased that correctly.

H’s father had polyps and repeated removal. So H had his first colonoscopy at age 48, and did have a polyp removed (often there are two locations - high up near the appendix, and in the very low colon; his was high up). He improved his diet, and the repeat (was supposed to be 3 year, but ended up being 5 year) cleared him for 10 years. I didn’t quite get all of my colon 100% clear with the prep (I did it after all my stage III breast cancer very extensive treatments; was worn out but wanted to make sure my colon was good before working on health) so I need to have a colonoscopy next year.

The longer we all live, the more likely we will be facing diseases like cancer. Just listen and take care of your body, and see doctors/medical practitioners that are competent and thorough.

Post 44702, you may have a fatty tumor (benign) or something else minor, but I would have it checked out.

I am losing weight at the desired rate with the 1400 calorie diet. I see the dietitian again on the 20th, but then I will just keep following my routine.

Diet and exercise can be said in gentler terms but it is what it is.We can embrace for better health while living life to the fullest.

Hello all,
I am new to your thread.
I am coming over on advice shared from the middle-age weight gain.

I changed jobs from retail mgr to become a consultant for a garden center; basically I am a container or pest finding gardener ( wearing athletic shoes or doc martin boots depending on the weather.)
My hobby activities are golf and swimming.

A friend asked me to help out in her store 2 nights a week until Columbus Day; where I am wearing heels for 3.5 hours after my other job. I used to wear these same shoes for 12 hours of retail work. I am now having arch cramps at night or when I am reading in bed.
Do any of you have suggestions?
Am I missing something in my diet?
Are there exercises to loosen up or should I say strengthen my sole?
Should I just keep a band to stretch my foot on my nightstand?

Can’t you wear something beside heels at this second job?

@ulumay you may need arch supports. Have your tried any OTC ones? Can see an podiatrist who can have something made up for you for $$$.

You may try massaging your feet before/after work. Also rotating movements and kind of rolling your feet forward to help loosen things/relax.

I had different night cramps, but they have subsided - more exercise, stretching.

Of course, I could wear something besides heels. Wouldn’t feel right in my dress without them.

After wearing heels or wedges for work for a couple of decades, I am wondering if it is the flat nature of the day
shoes?
If it was the heels, wouldn’t the cramps be in my calf?

I did stop swimming, before I go to work, because it seemed more practical / I like to jump in the pool after the garden center, maybe I need that morning pre work stretching?

I think the shoes are just getting to you. Bodies can change. I would change shoes! Welcome to our group.
