Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Oh big deal. I drove a truck twice that distance  Congrats!!

Congrats, BB!

WooHoo!!! Is that all BB??

If I was comparing myself to many people on this thread, I would have left a long time ago! As long as you’re “doing” be satsified running your own game - as long as you keep the game going!!

Today was such a lazy day. Slept in unti 8:30 lol. Wrote out a cardio program for a client. Interesting challenge she has only 30 minutes during her lunch break to follow it at the gym in her work place building. Won’t commit to more than 3x/wk, but having her commit at all is a real break through in her personal investment in becoming fit and healthy. She is 53, came to me with no exercise background other than dome “friends” of hers insisting and cajoling her into doing PX90 at home on her on which quickly led to back injuries. I’ve been working with her for 2 months and she now has a good foundation to exercise safely and effectively. She has a resting hr of 55 and hits her first ventilary threshold at 138. On an elliptical, she can go to 154 before she struggles to talk but it’s too soon to do a true VT2 (anaerobic) threshold test with her. So, I’m giving her a program with 5 minutes of warming up, 5 minutes of below VT1 base work and then 10 minutes of interval work with cycles 2 minutes above VT1 but below 154 and 3 minutes off at just below VT1. Then cool down. My plan is that if she sticks to the routine, to increase her intensity by 10% each week using a combination of increasing the heart rate range on the work intervals, lengthening the work intervals and shortening the recovery intervals and lengthening her total cardio time to 30 minutes including her warm up.

Other than that, I vacuumed, dusted and steam mopped my studio, changed the battery on the hub on my road bike that measures wattage and caught up on some reading. Tonight, indoor wattage training. Tomorrow, the fun will begin with parallettes training in the morning, setting up for our BBQ and then a boot camp in my backyard with a bunch of 20 something year old fitness junkies including my daughter  . Should be a blast!

Congratulations Bunsen! I bet it was a warm one!

Congrats BB! What an accomplishment :).

No kidding! 80+ degrees, no shade, monster hills, 12 degree road camber in some spots, and 75% humidity. Did I ever mention that I hate hills and that I wilt under the scorching sun? I had the opportunity to train for the heat, and I practiced my water/gel etc. routine to perfection, but I have never experienced so much up and downhill action. I did the Galloway method on the uphills and also at the very end on the downhill: basically, I walked a lot. Still managed to finish in one piece, which was my top goal.

This year’s weather, according to the orgainzers, was ungodly hot and humid, nothing like the prior years, and it showed in the times. Everyone was 10-30 min slower than expected. I carried sunblock, Advil, Endurolytes, 3 Huma gels, some TP (yeah, first world concerns!), bandaids, chapstick, and my trusted Amphipod water bottle. Ate one gel at mile 10, then another one at mile 15. Planned to eat the third at mile 21, but that was where the downhill roll began, and I decided that my body will just rely on gravity to carry me down. I swallowed a few Endurolytes here and there, too, because the electrolyte drink on the course was the disgusting Poweraid. At one point, I shared my Endurolytes and Advil with a fellow runner who got a monster leg cramp. He finished well (got an age group award, yay!!) and thanked me later.

Oh, the most important part: the clothing! I wore the striped Lulu Stuff Your Bra thing (it was well stuffed with the goodies mentioned above), yellow speckled Lulu shorts (used every nook and cranny to pack my supplies), Injinji socks, microfibertowel visor, Nike sunglasses, and Bondi 4 shoes. B-) Yeah, I ran shirtless and am proud of it! B-)

I feel so sorry for the folks who were still climbing up the monster hill while I was rolling down. I must have been quite demoralizing to see a middle aged female with a white, floppy belly to go for the home stretch while they were just approaching the inferno.

Congratulations, Bunsen!

We hiked in hot, humid, sunny scrub yesterday for miles. I toted the big ol’ camera along so we stopped often for photos ops and sips of water. More walking today on the road and out on some seriously flooded trails.

H and I saw the movie A Walk in the Woods yesterday. I wonder if idad has seen this yet. It wasn’t as good as the book, and Robert Redford at age 79 is way older than Bryson was when he did the Appalachian Trail hiking, but the idea of a near 80 yo even attempting this with an unfit (but humorous) Nick Nolte was a little entertaining

Congrats, Bunsen! Really nice job.

Sounds like rough conditions BB - power to BB for the “topless” run - I’m sure by mile 15 or so you could care less what anyone thought of your look (though it sounds smashing!) Round of applause!!!

Thanks, my dear CC friends. As abasket said, we all run our own races with the support and cheering of each other in this thread. And this is what I love about this place!

A note about this run: I really wanted to challenge myself, and I did it, but I don’t think I will ever want to combine heat and hills in one running event.

Congratulations on finishing such a tough race Bunsen! And so stylishly too!

Sounds really hard. It was smart to go shirtless. I’m doing that tomorrow and it’s only a 5K! Not thrilled with the no shirt thing for my corporate team, but our team shirts feel like sweater vests in the heat- dark red, short sleeved tech shirts. Um, no. Congratulations again, Bunsen. Tough course and conditions.

I want to see A Walk in the Woods!

Lol, abasket, that happened by about mile 5 when we hit the first hill. By mile11, when we split away from the halvers, you could be running nekkid, and no one would give a runner’s behind about it!

Good luck, MOfWC, with your race!

Congratulations BB on a great if challenging race!

I have decided that the key to a great run is drinking red wine the night before. H and I had dinner with D and her SO last night - wonderful food and some fabulous “Super Tuscan” red. Hard to get up this morning, but had a great 6.5 miles. Weather was cooler, low humidity, later start - all made for a very enjoyable run. Legs felt good.

Well there you go Sabaray - whatever works! Better the night before the morning of!

It has been HOT. I love summer so much - but by this point, I just am not feeling the 90’s and humidity! Lots of walking yesterday but no run. Fitness center was/is closed for the holiday weekend . Did mow the lawn and DID enjoy a Labor Holiday ice cream run - to the ice cream shop!

Weather should break Wednesday I think. And that’s about when my new toy - my Fitbit Charge HR should arrive!!!

36 minute run and HIIT workout. Ready for a rest day.

Successful racing today. Daughter executed the hilly 10K perfectly for a 45 second PR! She is really pleased- 55:35.

I decided to not freak myself out and I raced without looking at my electronics at all. I ran completely by feel and the goal was to stay off of the “I need to quit” ledge. My race started at 8:30 and was hot and sunny. No shirt. I ran 29 flat for 2nd in the age group. Splits were 9:23, 9:16, 9:06. I’m very happy with that. I didn’t taper and this was a huge improvement over last year’s disaster where the Sonic hot dog almost beat me. This is a big race for our area and a big community event. You have to dodge little kids who line up in the front. I’m happy with how it went. In 2009 I was running just under 25, just to give you an idea of my particular aging process! Hey- I’m still out there!

OMG, I remember the Sonic hot dog!!!

Sounds like a very good race in all aspects - mentality and time. And 2nd in age group! Any good loot???
(I always like hearing about race loot  )
