Good run this morning with one of my favorite running partners- just the two of us and it was great. Monster hill, faster than my average pace, and felt good after. We saw a skunk who was more afraid of us than we were of him. Glad he headed quickly for the brush!
Gertrude, I run frequently near farms for my longer runs and there are definite points where the pace quickens!
It has been awhile since I posted here. What with tracking my food intake, upping the yoga to 3x a week and a lot of walking, I am down 9 lbs. All of the above have become habits.
The challenge now is that as the sun comes up later in the AM, I will soon have to give up outdoor morning walks for the treadmill which is boring. I have tried watching TV while on the treadmill, but I really watch almost nothing and it bores me. I am thinking of some sort of book rack.
I’ve heard trainers say that anyone who can read while using exercise equipment is not working out hard enough. The concentration needed to focus on the print, turn pages, etc., takes effort away from the exercise. I know I found that to be true.
My solution was podcasts. I listen to a lot of NPR shows (Fresh Air and Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me are two of my favorites). I really do have to thank Apple for making my exercise much more enjoyable. You could also listen to books on tape.
Great results, FallGirl! Good suggestion from fireandrain - I know iDad frequently listened to podcasts as well - I find it impossible to read while on the treadmill. That’s usually when I use my imagination and envision myself winning Boston! Varying the pace/grade of the treadmill also breaks up the monotony somewhat.
Awesome results, FallGirl! When baby kiddo uses my treadmill, she entertains herself with cat videos and Just For Laughs found on Youtube. There must be something on Youtube that you will watch! I usually “reflect” while I run on the treadmill. If Mr turns on the TV, great, if not, I just run - a la Forrest Gump.
Forgot to mention that when I went for a spin around the neighborhood during lunch yesterday, I discovered a running store! Got some blueberries Huma gels. Saw some very pretty CWX running tights in dots. But $135 - oh my.
I listen to audio books on my iphone while I work out. When I am involved in a really good book, it motivates me to work out so that I can get the next chapters of the story.
With my friend here two nights, it was easy to go for the long walk at a vigorous pace - it is my usual walk/jog but with friend all walking at a brisk pace, 4.35 mi in 1 hour 15 min. If she were here it would be easier going out every night for the exercise. Somehow H wants to do his own thing - once in a while he has gone with me.
Guess it’s good I prefer going out on my own! I would get too antsy working out “when do we meet, where to we meet, etc.” - and waiting for H would get me nowhere!
Thanks, everyone. Believe it or not I have never listened to a podcast, I might need to start. Audio books might work too, our local public library has quite a few. I am also intrigued by the headlamp idea. I don’t have an issue walking in the cold (except on a few rare days), so that could work for me.
Last night was a 10.4 mile run. When I got back, I rode up in the elevator with a guy who asked how my run was. We had a short chat and then this morning when I left for the office I saw him headed out for a run - he was wearing a Michigan shirt from the Big10K race that I did in July. Small world! It’s fun to run into fellow Midwesterners here in Shanghai.
I need to get into podcasts, sounds like a great way to pass the time in a productive way. Mental exercise along with the physical exercise.
I caved in and bought a pair of the new PureCadence shoes. Ordered from Nordstrom, sight unseen, and already got a message that the UPS dude will be bringing them tomorrow. They will be delivered directly form the Brooks warehouse! I do need new treadmill shoes since I used my Huakas on the trail.
