Our health insurance links us to a site/app called “Rally” - looks very similar to Wellcoin, except you are using virtual coins to purchase chances to win items - so far I’ve been unsuccessful! It’s voluntary participation but it’s tedious to keep logging entries manually.
My bad weekend eating was chicken marsala and red wine. I think I’d rather have a Goo Goo cluster.
Did all our runners see Meb set a new Master’s record for the half distance? Pretty incredible. Meeting him is on the bucket list.
Meb is incredible and I have met him! I met him and had my picture taken with him in 2010 at the Las Vegas Marathon/Half which was a meet-up for my online women’s running group. My son ran (literally) into him in Central Park a year or so before that and Meb introduced himself by saying “Hi, I’m Meb.” My son said, “Um. I know who you are!” Meb is the nicest, sweetest person there is and I’m so proud of his new record.
My office is still closed today as Philadelphia slowly dismantles all the security restrictions from the Pope being in town. Just did a workout with my friend the trainer/bike racer. She did my parallettes routine and I did my weekly traditional weight lifting sessions. It was a lot of fun for the 2 of us to coach each other. And it was pretty funny too to hear 2 AARP eligible trainers whine about minor age related aches and pains as we did things many people half our age won’t or can’t do.
Sabaray, lol, chicken Marsala and red wine is healthy eating in my book! We ended up going out for dinner on Saturday. Mr. wanted to check out the newer brewery, but we were told they did not take reservations. With college classes starting Monday, we figured they would be packed. So off to Purple we went. Ate their fabulous beef with mushrooms - yum. I grilled on Sunday and made an eggplant stew using my homegrown veggies.
MOfWC - cool! Meeting Meb is on my wish list, too.
Michael, I checked the gizmo. Wow, awesome device, but it is a bit of an info overload for me! I noticed they make bike “computers” - I have a gizmoholic here who can use one (thinking gift ideas). What do you think of theirs?
The nights are getting noticably shorter. Going to have to change my dinner time so I can get enough outdoor time! 25 minute bike ride had to do because it was getting dark. Bummer!
@BunsenBurner , I haven’t ridden using either of the Wahoo bike computers but know a bit about them. The Wahoo RFKLT is a smart phone based computer. It’s designed to interface with your smart phone and fitness applications on it. To get full functionality from it, you must carry your smart phone. An excellent review of it can be found here: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/08/bluetooth-barometric-altimeter.html
The new Wahoo ELEMNT is a full stand alone GPS/bike computer. It will also interface with a smart phone but a smart phone is not required to use all of its features. A good review of a pre-production unit can be found here: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/09/wahoos-computerelemnt-first.html
What’s kind of cool about the Wahoo products is that they are all based on an open source architecture. That means that you can take advantage of a sizable host of third party applications and are not limited to proprietary applications like most other devices out there. In addition, the Wahoo devices are both Bluetooth 4 and Ant+ compatible which makes them extremely flexible to connect to other devices.
Other products worth looking at are the Garmin Edge series GPS bike computers. They are full blown GPS units with bike computer functions. I personally use a Garmin Edge 800 because at the time that I bought it, it was state of the art. It still serves all of my needs but if I were in the market for a new bike GPS, I would carefully compare it to the Wahoo ELEMNTS. At the other extreme, are the Cat Eye bike computers that are strictly just closed system bike computers. For plain old bike computers that just give you bike metrics, they are hard to beat. They come in wired and wireless versions and I used them exclusively in the past until I decided to get the Edge 800.
Commenting on flu shot, they believe they have a good protection combination this year. My arm wasn’t sore long. I don’t like the flu mist because that actually one year did give me flu like symptoms albeit mild experience. And I did have a shot from a female pharmacist once w/o problem. My family practice office gets the flu shot in and they run clinic times for it, so no big wait or fuss. My H doesn’t believe in the flu shot - he did have the flu bad one year, but he has to decide for himself. One dau is in nursing school and has to get the flu shot. The other is on a large campus and I am begging her to get the shot (she did last year) - they have convenient and varied times scheduled around campus.
I got a fast 5 mile run in last night. Planning on an 8-10 mile run tonight and hoping I don’t get rained out.
I agree that the shorter days and getting dark earlier are sad signs of the coming winter. I will miss being able to do lots of things outdoors in the evenings.
3.1 miles this morning in on/off rain- but it was 71 degrees! I’m not a fan of running in the rain, but I survived.
If all goes well, we are adopting a senior dog. He looks and sounds like the clone of our beloved Charly who we just lost. He weighs 120 pounds! He is 12, so we won’t have him for too long, but his parents got a divorce and left him at a shelter. His foster family describes him as just the most sweet, mellow guy imaginable. H and I know it is what we are meant to do.
I am at my lowest weight since probably 1983, which is odd. I eat plenty- and not always good choices. The two changes in the last few months are the standing workstation, which I use in the standing position most of the day (but not all day) and the smaller dinners/bigger lunches. I think I’m OK health-wise. It’s interesting. I hope I can hold it within a few pounds through the winter (holiday foods) when I usually shoot up as much as 10 pounds over where I am right now.
Could the standing up during the day and the smaller dinners be the reason? Also- for mental and mileage reasons, I do a couple of miles after work on my treadmill (usually my 2nd run of the day) when I get home from work while I watch the news. That seems to cut my appetite for dinner, too. I usually do this about 4 days a week.
(whoever writes these dog bios sure knows how to grab your heart!!!)
Glad to hear your feedback on the standing workstation. I would LOVE to see that in our office. Unfortunately, I work with a group who would not put that in the top any % of office “wants/needs”. In fact, last week they were asking for one of these!!! http://www.countryliving.com/home-design/decorating-ideas/a36448/genius-nap-desk/
abasket- I actually got the Varidesk as an ADA accommodation with a note from my bone doctor recommending more standing. It comes out of HR’s budget and not my department’s! No one balked at this at all. I believe they should be offered for everyone. It only cost around $300. I would have even paid for it myself, but they don’t like us to have a lot of personal equipment around.
My biggest meal of the day is usually lunch, unless I’m out to dinner. It keeps me from eating like crazy when I get home in the evening.
Very intense Pilates session this am; working on stretching out my hips, learned some really good new stretches where you’re strengthening one leg and stretching the other hip. Yep, hips are very tight. I’ve been very bad and haven’t been doing a lot of running recently. Rain makes it very hard to get up and go that early.
Good article in the WSJ today (front page in Personal Journal) about the dangers of sitting too much. It says standing burns 1/2-1 additional calories a minute (240 over 4 hours). It says you really mess up your body by sitting too much.
