I have a 22 mile run scheduled 3 weeks from the marathon and then start the taper. I’m tweaking the plan slightly, because the 22 mile run is the weekend our son is getting married and I just don’t see having time to get it in that weekend, so I’ll do it a couple days early. I wish I had gone with a different training plan as I really feel as if I’m ready now and I just want to be done with it! On the flip side, though, it is nice to pretty much be able to eat anything these days!
BunsenBurner-doing the long run in the rain and finishing up on the treadmill sounds terrible! You are one determined person to go to those lengths to get it done!
Gertrude-wow, that sounds awful! I hope the surgery goes well.
NMinn-congrats to your DD on a great race! And super congrats to you on the weightloss!
I love that dress! When is the wedding, Michael? We all need to mark our calendars!
One of my personal disagreements with most current training plans is the 3 week taper. I like a 2 week taper, and I’ve actually done pretty well with a 1 week taper. I like the last long run 2 weeks before the race and not 3. I feel like I lose too much. Back in my day it was a 2 week taper.
I’ve completed runs in bad weather just by threatening myself with finishing up on the treadmill! Actually, I am learning to really embrace and appreciate my treadmill. I do some decent speedwork on it and I believe it is helping me.
Haha Bunsen, love that dress! Going to send that link to my daughter and suggest she wear it as her party dance dress
. Given that half the guests will be 20 somethings who work in the fitness, theater, dance and entertainment industries, she’s going to need activewear for her party dress!
MOWC, the wedding is October 15, 2016. My daughter is so ahead of the game in her planning; has the venue, the caterer, entertainment, photographer, videographer all set and she thinks she found her dress yesterday. The florist will be selected this week from two that she met with. She has even reserved blocks of rooms at the Bellevue and the Ritz for out of town guests. She is in hyper focus overdrive lol. It helps that she has worked in the event and entertainment industries since she was 15 and knows all the vendors of wedding services in our area. There’s very little for my wife and me to do - other than write checks for deposits!
Awesome! Writing checks was my job as well when the big kiddo planned her big event.
The yard waste can is full, which made me declare a ceasefire in our war on ivy. My arms are sore, but I still managed to do my regular free weights set.
A bottle of 14 Hands bubbly fell out of the fridge - I dodged that one, phew! Mr. decided to open it and celebrate something… Like not going to the ER with a broken foot.
Googling turned up 2 big events that happen(ed) on Oct. 4 - World Animal Day and the launch of the first man-made space object, the Sputnik. Yay. I gave the cats some steak, and we all celebrated their day.
Very cool, Michael.
We picked up our sweet new senior Golden. We’ve changed his name to Jerry Jeff Walker (JJ). He’s settling right in and will be fun to walk.
So cool, MOfWC! Perfect way to celebrate World Animal Day.
Enjoy!
Congrats on the addition to your family MOWC!
Congrats on your new addition, MOWC! And super kudos to you, NMinn, on your weight loss!! The mention of 5 lb parties made me think, again, about idad. Was it you who sent him a PM, @MomofWildChild? Any answer?
Yesterday we finally saw the sun here – although we really needed the rain. In addition to the rain, it’s been really windy, which just makes it feel colder. We were glad to see Joaquin head out to sea, especially since our insurance here at the beach requires us to put up all the hurricane window/door covers if a named hurricane is headed our way. (If we don’t, and have damage, insurance can just say, “Too bad.”) We’ve spent the last week running (driving, actually) all over, so it’s nice to have a less frenetic schedule for the next couple of weeks.
Interesting article about dog walking. When I take Kiley (no Charlie here!) we go at a pretty fast clip. When H comes along, he’s the one that keeps saying, “Slow down.” I’ll take Kiley for a long walk later today – without H. Tomorrow is our final Ladies League round of golf for the season. I’m hoping to get in a few more rounds in the next couple of weeks before storing my clubs for the winter.
Thanks! He has settled in beautifully, although on Thursday night he got “skunked” and although he got washed, he still smells- a lot. We are going to have to figure that out today.
I did not hear back from iDad, which makes me sad.
Warning: rant ahead! Finally a beautiful day here, so brisk walk with Sabadog and Sabapup this morning, or as brisk as my very stiff ankle would allow. H did not come along. I am about at my wit’s end with him - we belong to a gym that I am rarely using and he is not using at all; he is now on medication for high blood pressure and a statin that he was prescribed when he had ruptured blood vessels in his eye; last night I prepared filet and roasted brussel sprouts for dinner; post dinner he finished two leftover containers of Thai food (my lunches for a couple of days) and huge quantities of cheese curds that were just purchased. I don’t have time to go shopping every day but I’m starting to think that might be the only way to stop him from eating everything in sight. Couple the binge eating and drinking with the every day commentary about how he’s just going to do it and lose 100 pounds and I’m climbing the walls. At this point it’s more than 100 pounds he needs to lose. Our life together is really limited because of his physical limitations.
Okay, rant over!
MOWC, I love your new friend. He has to think he’s in heaven.
Welcome JJ! Love that you were able to make his “yours” with a new name. Too bad on the skunking though! Yikes!
Sabaray, I totally understand your rant. There was a while it seemed your H was on the D/E bandwagon with you and was doing well - so hard when you see that success - and then they walk away from it - you feel like, “all that hard work, to waste!”.
My H lost 40+ pounds on WW a couple years ago. He had developed such good habits, was in the groove, had problem solved his weak eating times (he rides in a patrol car and it was easy to pull through fast food drive throughs - combated it by keeping 100 calorie type snacks in the car with him or settling for a banana with is iced tea from the convenience store). Then along came a torn meniscus. Surgery and off of work for a couple of months - the old habits creeped back in. He is still going to WW - but sometimes I want to say, “why? You don’t seem to be trying anymore - save the $$!” He has gained most of the weight back. He KNOWS what he needs to do. He makes bad choices. All the time!
Yesterday I made a nice breakfast like I usually do on the weekend (a late breakfast and dinner are our weekend routine). A homemade breakfast skillet with potatoes, onion, peppers, a little bacon. Some scrambled eggs. Sliced strawberries. He ate his a little later than me. I noticed his food gone, but the strawberries still on the counter. Who wants to eat strawberries when you have the other good stuff (plus a slice of english muffin bread he made himself)?!!
I suggested to him that he should eat the strawberries FIRST. When you’re good and hungry they will taste even better. Then tackle the other food. But eat your fruit! His solution? Wait to eat them - and then when you do, squirt on a whole bunch of whipped cream to make them taste even better! UGH.
Sabaray, I tried the not bringing snacks in the house, not buying his weakness foods (chips, ice cream), etc. Fact is, he will just go buy it himself! Or eat it away from home. The willpower has to come from him and can’t become your battle to fight everyday because THEN you will have the high blood pressure and angst - which I totally get.
You need him to care more. Yet you can’t turn your caring off. It’s a tough situation.
I struggle with my DH too. We have a fundamental difference in what we think is the purpose of food. For me, it is to nourish your body. Sure, it should taste good, but you can learn to enjoy almost any food & it tastes so much better when there’s no guilt involved. He thinks of food as something that should taste good first, & if it has any nutrition that’s just a bonus.
He did undergo quite a sea-change in his eating a couple months ago when we went to see “That Sugar Film.” We no longer have orange juice, breakfast cereal, cookies, sweetened yogurt or Lean Cuisine in the house - these used to be daily staples. But I can’t get him off the diet drinks, Kraft mac & cheese, & a bunch of other processed items. But as abasket notes, the change has to come from him & I try not to fret too much. I really do want him to be around as long as possible…
MOWC - congrats on your new “baby”! I’m sure he will enjoy all the love & good care.
Some of the problem with weight loss is it is slower with being older with slower metabolism and maybe more limited movement (and also maybe medication - I have to be on medication that is fatiguing my body but I have to be on it to prevent cancer recurrence) - but usually there is more time to be able to break up exercise into easier things like morning and evening walks, etc.
I would encourage seeing a dietitian/nutritionist - there are a lot of tips that help. Can find a dietitian or hospital/program via www.eatright.org My problem is increasing exercise while also decreasing the calories - I am on a plateau right now. Have to make small sacrifices every day.
Can you put away some things in a small locked refrigerator?
Yes, away from home someone non-cooperative can eat/buy other things. But not having them accessible in the home can possibly help.
Does H need a boost like going to a ‘fat farm’?
I can understand your frustration, sabaray (and others). Even my athletic husband has fallen into some bad habits and I can tell he’s putting on some weight. He eats sweets every night while we watch tv and has wine or a beer almost every night. He doesn’t overdrink, but those are calories… He’s 70, but it’s easy to creep on up there. I can imagine that knowing the number to lose is 100 could be especially daunting for a male.
I felt like our weight watchers group at work that I was in in 2008-2009 could be a little enabling and coddling. I know they aren’t supposed to yell at you, but a little more accountability might have helped some of our group who really didn’t make progress.
abasket, I have the opposite problem - my Mr. eats too much fruit! I have to hide his morning bowl of berries because if I put it in the table before serving eggs etc., he will eat it (without even noticing it!) and then will ask, “And the berries?” after polishing off the eggs and yogurt. I swear he eats 6-7 large pieces of fruit (apples, persimmons, kiwis, etc.) every day and lectures me on how I do not eat any.
Ever since hearing that sugar from fruit does not produce an immediate insulin response due to the fiber, he thinks calories from fruit do not count. Lol. Other than that, he is pretty much onboard with the dietary and exercise changes we made back in the days when sabaray started the thread, so I’m very lucky.
SOS, H and I both previously participated in a weight loss program sponsored by our local hospital - I did it to provide moral support, having lost 100+ pounds already - didn’t feel I wanted to lose more. He did the program a second time - without me this time - and it was a disaster. He won’t commit to work with a trainer, he won’t track his intake- is indiscriminate in his eating - it’s not as if I’m loading the house with temptation - but no matter how healthy a food, too much of it is not good.
So true Sabaray, large quantities of good food can be a problem as well. Because no matter what, calories do add up.
The one fruit my husband does eat this time of year without being prompted, apples. With a generous serving of that caramel dip…
I’m not a huge fruit person. I like fruit, just don’t often crave it or even think to buy it.
Did 1.5 hours on the bike today in some more wonderful weather. Low 60s, partly cloudy. My favorite time of year, actually. It’s going to get almost to 90 later in the week, though, grrr…
