Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Haven’t posted in awhile. Life, work, INJURIES preventing me from staying active on this thread. I know -excuses!

I had a stress fracture in foot that stopped my running and still giving me problems. Now my knee is acting up again. I know-whining!

Doing a lot of swimming and biking. MNKat-my cycling speed has improved dramatically this summer. I’ve ridden a couple of times with a former pro rider. It’s amazing how much faster you can go when riding with someone above your level. I’m still a rock in the water but improving somewhat. My focus for next summer is going be both track running and triathlons.

I’m a big proponent of cryotherapy now. I know a lot of the pro teams use it and the Nike Oregon project as well. Salazar uses it for his runners. You step into a chamber for 3 minutes at minus 200/300 Farenheit. Similar to ice bath benefits.
I feel like a million bucks afterwards for about 4 hours. Better than medicinal marijuana! Google “Nike Oregon project cryotherapy” and you’ll find a YouTube video.

We missed you, Ohio. Sorry about the injuries! Glad you have things you can do, though.

Ohio, riding with the former pro must have been very cool. So much you can learn and just riding with someone who has that level of technique and group riding skills changes the dynamics of a group ride tremendously. Hope your injuries resolve quickly.

You people amaze me!! Sabaray, hope your hand is ok.
My DS and his DW ran a tough mudder yesterday. I think they are nuts. But the survived it-- alive with no issues that I know of!

Welcome back OhioPublic! You’ll be back on the pavement with your feet before you know it!

The Columbus marathon is running right past my D1’s house - her an her friends are out cheering them on this morning. That will be about mile 20-21 for the runners - D1 just started running a bit - hope those exhausted bodies don’t scare her away!! Wish I was down there to watch!

Wow, big thanks to your D, abasket, for being there for the runners! Miles 20-21 are the hardest part of the race, and having someone out there cheering for you definitely helps.

Ohio, welcome back! Glad that you are making the most out of your recovery and improving your biking and swimming.

Abasket- I ran Columbus in 1993 and it remains one of my favorite marathons. It was the perfect size and really showcased the city. I spent a lot of time in that part of Ohio on business, so I had some fans out there.

Hi all. Congrats to all the racers. Welcome back ohio.

I got a call early Thursday that my 85 year old dad had a stroke. I’m going through various stages of hell right now so running is put off for a while.

I’m so sorry, blankmind - I’ll be keeping good thoughts for you and your dad.

Hot yoga today–first time back at this studio. I feel like I am improving. Some of the poses that used to be impossible (pidgeon) are now just difficult, but doable.

Sorry to hear about your Dad’s stroke Blankmind–sending good karma. Congrats to MOWC and Deb on htheir race performances. Sabaray–hope your hand heals quickly.

Oh, blankmind. So sorry to hear about your dad. Just remember that running can be a good stress reliever.

Blankmind, I’m sorry to hear about your dad - thinking of you !

D ended up staying out watching the Columbus racers WAY longer than she planned on! She said she could feel their gratefulness for the cheering (and I know her and her friends - they will CHEER you on!!!) She also being able to track her work friend through the app and know when he would be coming around the corner - so cool!

I should get my Chicago runner friend to do the Columbus whole or half - that way I can go watch her!

My cousin who ran the Chicago marathon last year was supposed to run a marathon in Amsterdam today. She posted her bib on FB but also reported that she picked it up but would not be able to run due to an injured knee - she made the trip anyway (from south of France) to cheer on friends - she was bummed and just hoping that the doc this week gives her some hope to heal and allow her to run again.

So sorry blankmind. Never easy.

I’ve been there with an elderly parent blankmind. I understand how difficult this is for you. Try to hang in there.

I’m sorry to hear about your dad, blankmind. So difficult.

Nice to see you here again, ohio!

Good job, deb922, on your race PR!

I woke up yesterday before dawn and ran 4 miles–I know, with the later sunrise times, that’s not saying that much  But I also walked 4 more later in the day. I was exhausted last night, so I know I had a decent workout day.

I’m so sorry, blankmind. Wishing you lots of strength to deal with it.

I read the article about carbs posted a few pages back by Michael. It took me 2 tries to read it – first time I wanted to throw my computer across the room because I am so sick and tired of all the back and forth on diet. Low carb, high carb, low fat, high fat – can’t there be a consensus? I generally follow my gut to eat well (balanced, veggies, fruit, low on carbs – except for sugar, which is my downfall), but it’s still frustrating to see how different “experts” give different advice. The upshot of this article is – high protein.

Saturday was a washout exercise wise, but a big eating day, so I bumped up a bit on Sunday and today. I ran 3+ miles yesterday, and then ran/walked another 4+ more, for a total of 7.7 miles. A lot for me. Today was an hour of swimming, weights, and now a walk.

Happens once in a blue moon for me…ran my own 5K + some - at an under 10 minute pace! It’s a big deal for me to see 9:50!!!

Pretty cool, abasket!

We went out to dinner and ate too much yesterday. Normally, I would not order a dessert, but the dang 3 course meal (restaurant week!) came with a choice of one, and I succumbed to the power of flourless chocolate cake. I paid for it dearly last night when I could not fall asleep because of the bloated tummy. Typically, places would serve smaller versions of their dishes during restaurant week, but this place served full-sized menu items! I think my stomach must have shrunk.
