Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I want to state that the sonic hot dog at my race last week was fast! No way I could beat her. I’m thinking there should be some kind of law, the sonic hot dog racer can not finish in the top half of the race.

Sorry blankmind - hopefully this will clear up quickly, in time for your race!

Blankmind, I suspect that the beneficial effect of the roller is a give away. Anyone want to bet on IT band tightness? Can pull everything out of alignment and cause radiating or displaced remote
pain. Several years ago, I tore my medial meniscus. A couple of years ago, I was convinced I had done it again. MRI showed nothing. Turned out to be alignment issues and displaced pain caused by really tight IT band.

I think you are probably right Michael. My first thought when it started hurting was meniscus

Blankmind, this is exactly what my knee problem was back then when I jumped off the retaining wall. I thought I would need surgery, but a very helpful ortho doc sent me off to a PT (I picked a lady who was a serious marathoner). Not only she gave me a bunch of helpful core-strengthening exercises, but she also analyzed my gait and corrected a few things about the way I ran. All covered by my medical insurance less the co-pay, yay. I also got an awesome knee brace from CEP and still use it (mostly out of superstition, I know) when I run long distances. Core stabilization is key for knee stabilization. Monster walks, planks, lunges, squats are all good.

Speaking of costumed characters running! The day before my last marathon, there was a kiddie race where kids 12 and under raced a guy dressed as a giant chicken: 4 age groups, 2 heats each (boys and girls)… The chicken let the toddlers pass him, but then worked very hard trying to beat the leaders in the 10-12 groups - all in 90 degree heat! The chicken was completely fried by the end of the event.

Fried chicken…lol!

One of the best things about this running skirt is the name, the Gotta Go Skirt. For long distance runners. It’s a kickstarter; I own and like their running skirts. There’s a trap door to make things easier. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/skirtsports/running-skirt-answer-natures-call-dont-bare-your-a?utm_source=Master+List&utm_campaign=9655f90a20-Is_THIS_keeping_you_from_a_PR_10_25_2015&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_d6b168a5b1-9655f90a20-274381621

I saw that and I also like their products. I think I’ll wait until it’s up on the website and not kickstarter.

Congratulations on completing the 10K Gertrude! That’s fantastic.

MoWC, you always amaze with your determination. So glad you were able to get the 4 miles in.

Ouch, blankmind. Stopping at 11 was the right thing to do. Glad you didn’t take a risk AND that your knee is better after rolling.

Bunsen, fried chicken indeed, lol.

I managed to get up at a proper time this morning, early enough to see a gorgeous sunrise while out for a 4.5 mile run. We hiked today, too, in a state forest–a lovely warm and sunny 7 miles through the woods and around the scrub. I had the camera along, and dropped a number of times to the ground, trying to photograph a beautiful but tiny cobalt blue tiger beetle  Sand, sunscreen, insect repellent, and sweat…I was filthy after this hike. My H and I stopped on the way home for the annual flu shot. Pharmacist told us it was the cold that made the shot hurt, but both H and I have sore arms hours later.

I was watching the kiddie race and was really worried about the dude inside the chicken costume! Luckily, he survived. A couple of times volunteers had to pour water down the beak. Then the next day the entire racing crowd got fried… Glad I was not running in a fuzzy, feathered bodysuit!

Like wearing a down coat in the 90’s. I hope this chicken wasn’t feathered

Quite an interesting concept, fireandrain! But like MOfWC, I think I will wait for the actual product.

Way to go Gertrude! Such a great feeling, eh?!!!

I’m surprised that a company like Skirt Sports has a Kickstarter? Interesting concept and I too like their skirts but odd to me with the kickstarter!

A good friend of mine ran the DC marathon today. I didn’t know she was running it until she was done! She said she didn’t want to tell anyone because for this race if you don’t make it to mile 20 by a certain time they make you get on a bus and take you to the finish line where you get no medal - apparently she was worried she could be that pokey! Oh my gosh, that would be horrifying! If I run 20 I still give me half a medal or something!!!

Visited a nice brand spankin new REI today in Columbus - we don’t have one here and it was nice to browse. Picked up a cute Toad and Co. skirt.

Came across this today and thought of all the runners here.

LOL, that’s hilarious!

Gertrude - great job on your 10K!

blankmind-sorry to hear about the knee pain. I’m sure it was disappointing to not get your 17 miles in, but it’s still a good run at 11 miles. I hope you’re able to figure out the cause of the knee pain. I had a torn meniscus last year and PT was a huge help. I was able to avoid surgery and 6 weeks of PT had me feeling great again.

Looking forward to reading the Do’s and Do Not’s of Running Your First Marathon at the end of the week when I am back home in the US. Seems to be blocked by the Great Firewall of China. It’s pretty funny (and seemingly arbitrary) what gets blocked. I understand the issues with Google and Facebook and know why they are blocked, but gosh darn it, what does China have against Nordstrom?!

I wonder if they also block Amazon… so everyone there has to shop Alibaba.

Nope, Amazon is good (and they have seen plenty of business from me this week…). Initially I get directed to the Amazon China site, but then can change to the US site. But you’re right, the locals prefer Alibaba.

As seen on one of the other threads… I hope to be like her - being able to do 2 sets of 10 “big girl” pushups at the age of 80+!

I may not always 100% agree with what she has to say… But goodness I 100% agree with her that fitness is THAT important.
