Thanks for that review, MOWC - I was debating if I wanted an Apple watch or not and now I’m pretty sure I want the new Garmin instead. Hope you feel better soon - that crud just seems to hang on.
abasket, I hear you on the food. I made Chex mix and spicy cheese crackers - Mr. Sabaray ate most of the mix and the crackers were a favorite of D’s. I did make a peanut butter pie (completely finished) and a rum cake (more than half left) - I think the remainder will be coming to the office. I’d have a hard time resisting the baklava.
Thanks for the Garmin review, MOfWC! Now I want one!
I rebelled and did not bake a thing!! Because Mr. bought a $15 Cheesecake Factory sampler cake at Costco (it was a good deal, but!..). I did make a few batches of various ethnic dumplings… each had dough made with 3-4 cups of flour!!! Horrors.
Did not run much during the break because the weather was awful - below 40 and raining. Did do a few core sets, so it is time to pick it up,… Except my right ear is plugged and can’t hear a thing. Will see if I can get to the clinic today.
If you’re a fan of Michael Pollan, check your local PBS listings. A documentary based upon his work “In Defense of Food” is premiering this Wednesday. I’m looking forward to it.
So yesterday’s cycling class taught by my daughter was a blast. There I was surrounded by all these 20 somethings and early thirties young people including my daughter’s fiancé, her maid of honor (who’s a professional dancer that runs her own dance company), fitness trainers of all sorts who take my daughter’s advanced indoor cycling classes - and then me, the only bona fide AARP member lol. It was a tough class but so,so much fun to play off the energy and enthusiasm of the group. And I can say that I represented all of us senior citizens on this Board with grace and poise, the sweat on the floor a testimonial that these youngsters got nothing over us!
No doubt and way to go MK! No one will be looking at you and saying “geezer” in that class! Sounds like a class of master athletes!
Speaking of youth, just completed 30 minutes of Zumba and 30 minutes core/cardio with my D2 who is 18. Nothing that kicked my butt, but worked up a little sweat none the less.
13,000 steps today – all walking the mall! Went shopping with my daughter, and most of the steps were earned delivering packages to the car in-between stores. Shopping as cardio.
abasket, isn’t it so much fun to work out with your kid! Their energy is contagious and watching them as they work their routines is so often a gratifying reflection of a positive influence we have had in their lives. It just makes me smile to watch both my kids in the gym, even as they bust my chops lol.
I am shocked, shocked - my kid who used to lazy-arse during her college breaks is now an exercise addict! She walked 3.25 miles to the nearby shopping center just to get a Starbucks several days in a row in addition to exercising in our little home gym.
Mr. is now on board with getting a pull-up bar thingy! Yay!!
I went to Barre class last night - once again, so many body types and ages! Lots of geezers. Really fun workout though and I definitely feel all the muscles that don’t usually get much of a workout with running. Rest day today to get ready for Pilates training tomorrow.
D was previously a fan of Old Navy workout gear - well, since she’s been working out more, she invested in some Lulu pants. She’s seen the light! “I see why you like these so much, Mom!” Best part - I didn’t have to buy them.
Love running with my daughter around town. Love the “attention” we get from the car horns, yelling, etc. it’s not hard to recognize us as both of us have red hair and are known within the running community.
MNKat - glad that you represented our group with flying colors. I think it is good that the young folks see that older age doesn’t necessarily relegate you to the “walker brigade”.
MOWC cost me 300 plus bucks with her glowing report of the Garmin 235. This forum might be good for my personal health but is bad for my financial health!
Should arrive tomorrow. Got the black model. The blue band was a little trendy for me. Looking forward to doing more HR training. I really got tired of the strap. I also am fixated on measuring resting HR.
Good morning everyone! 2 days post-race, I am eager to get back out there but my body is not ready. I had some serious DOMS yesterday evening - I haven’t had that after my previous long runs, so I guess that means I put some extra effort into the race.
I think I will get started on my 365 days of squats tomorrow, just to get a jump on 2016. I’m also looking into mat pilates courses. I’ve reached my target distance, now to work on getting stronger and faster!
For anyone who may be interested, the calories expended calculation of the Garmin 235 is probably very accurate (provided you fill out your user profile accurately and use a heart rate strap as opposed to the wrist measurement). It uses the Firstbeat second generation algorithm. Firstbeat has a website explaining how it derives its algorithm which is very informative. I’ve fielded tested Firstbeat against kilojoules on my bike using a Garmin Edge 800 and a Powertap hub based rear wheel. On a bike, the kilojoule readout from the hub has a 1:1 correlation to calories burned and with the Garmin 800 I can get side by side readouts of calories based on heart rate and my profile using Firstbeat and the Kilojoules expended using the Powertap hub. If anything, Firstbeat under reports calories burned when compared to Kilojoules expended.
Worked out with my D yesterday too! We went to an evening yoga class after a half day of returning/exchanging and buying gifts. We were at one of those outdoor malls and I easily got way beyond my step goal (10K).
I could relate to your indoor cycling comments MK. The yoga studio I go to is populated by 30-something stay-at-home-moms who are in great shape (they can do the inversion poses–which I bypass). I’m one of three old folks who are regulars in the morning classes. At first, I felt intimidated, but now I enjoy the experience and I’ve gotten so much better with the poses.
LOL, Ohio. This forum has cost me plenty of money, too! I don’t think you would have liked the blue band- it’s really aqua, which I love, but definitely stands out. Of course, my 220 has a purple band. I really do like it.
5.1 miles this morning. Temp dropped 20 degrees from yesterday and it’s pretty gloomy, but no rain, snow or ice.
The problem with me getting all my certifications and starting my “fitness industry” business is that I have deluded myself into believing I needed to spend exorbitant amounts of money rebuilding my gym and buying all this neat stuff. I keep telling my wife (who just rolls her eyes) that going to equipment stores is a business trip or market research. :">
Don’t worry BB, I am taking it VERY easy because I have no choice right now - too stiff & sore to do most anything. I did just go for a half- hour stroll - that felt good. A little further tomorrow, but no running until Saturday at least.
