I ran today, five miles–37 degrees and rainy. Cold AND wet. The poor dog, who never wants to stop running, came in the house and lay down in front of the heater vent for ten minutes. (I had a dog, years ago, whose teeth chattered because she was really cold after we’d been outside in cold rain for too long. I felt very bad for her. Thankfully, I’ve never since let any other dog get that cold. Still, I did feel bad for my poor wet puppy today. He was ready to quit by the time we got home.)
Does anyone have Mindbody (the app which enables you to sign into / book various fitness facilities)? Well, as it turned out, I had 3 different accounts - one for CorePower Yoga, one for Orange Theory, and one for a local barre studio. They were under 2 different emails (one of which I am losing as I retire) and 3 different passwords. I spent 2 hours this morning just fixing them all and de-installing / re-installing apps and changing passwords so I can get them all on one account - I think I burned calories just from that! I also met with my trainer and we laid out a plan that focuses more on the cardio (harumph) but still lays in the yoga, pilates, barre that I like to do. The cardio is a combo of running and Orange Theory on different days, and the strength training focuses each day on a different part of the body, in a certain progression / schedule. MNK would be very proud.
I have the Mindbody app–the yoga studio and also the barre place where I do TRX use this for scheduling. It can be annoying. You have to sign in and out of the app for one facility before you can go to sign up at another place… I use the same name/password for all of them. My gym uses a different online scheduler for cycling classes–it’s not nearly as easy to use.
Mindbody has a very significant market share. Most of the boutique studios in Philadelphia, across a a broad array of fitness styles, use it. There’s also a newer online service where you can create a credit bank for yourself and then schedule and pay for sessions across multiple studios. The cost is then deducted from your bank. Its name is escaping me at the moment.
So I had gotten all excited when I read that Mad Dogg Fitness, the owner of the Spinning brand and program, was now going to partner with Precor to produce a new line of Spinning bikes. I thought that finally a new line of bikes would be produced that would combine the best that Star Trac, Schwinn and Keiser had to offer. Modern appealing form design, magnetic resistance, strain gauge wattage measurement and a quiet low maintenance belt drive. Pictures and specs of the new bikes have now been released. What a let down. The form design is old school built like a tank clunky. The resistance is old technology friction. It doesn’t even feature calculated wattage let alone have a strain gauge. But you can get a belt drive - but as an added cost option. Yippee. Bleh.
Good Morning! Just for the heck of it I decided to see how long I could run on the treadmill without dropping down to a walk. Eight minutes. I was at 3 minutes a few weeks ago! Making progress.
My yoga studio does not use Mindbody (yet), but I looked up local studios which offer barre classes. I found one with good ratings especially for beginners, am thinking of trying a class next time D is home.
Also checked out a local running club. They have a training program similar to the one I am hoping to join in the spring so it looks as if I have no excuse not to train this spring.
That’s great, FallGirl! Running with a group can make a big difference - having people expecting you can make a huge difference in whether you sleep in or run. Oh, and misery loves company. I’ve really enjoyed Barre so far - it’s a lot of fun.
Pup walk early this morning, then worked with my Pilates trainer - I am working on pikes. My 2016 goals are to achieve a full pike and teaser, stretch more regularly, and give myself a break from running when I need to. No more running through pain.
Our nearby gym just got new equipment, but sheesh, no monitors on them or fans on the treadmills! Whats up with that? The TVs still hang from the ceiling and the choices to plug in to watch are only 3- CNBC (which often is an infomercial of some sort) fox news (blech) and a sports channel (which also often has infomercials). I really don’t want to watch a vacuum informercial while working out.
Today I will use our elliptical as the weather is awful and I have to be somewhere shortly. My weight has been stuck on a plateau. Its frustrating…
Excellent, Fall Girl. Good progress and goals. sabaray- pikes sound hard! jym- some people bring their own iPads to watch shows. I had trouble at our gym (part of why I broke down 2 years ago and got the treadmill at home) because the treadmills were way in the back of the cardio section and the TVs (there were 8) that were hanging up were sort of far away. Some shows worked, but I couldn’t watch games because it was just too far away. At our gym you could ask for a certain channel, though.
It looks like we were too busy yesterday to celebrate the 6th anniversary of this thread! Congrats to all and big thanks to sabaray who got us rolling here!
JYM, you might not be losing poundage, but if you’re exercising you are still getting toning benefits - which will eventually result in less inches - an even better thing in my book! You’ve developed the routine, keep it up!
Our gym is not the most up to date - tv’s are fine but no fans on treadmills! In fact, I didn’t know that was a think - built in fans - until I was on my last trip in Denver! But our gym is VERY roomy, lots of machines, lots of options, free classes (university facility and free for staff) - and, the price ($0) and convenience is great - so, still a pretty good option.
Sabaray-
There is a newer club not far from us, so I usually go to that one. ANd today’s workout was very brief, on the elliptical… More later, I hope.
Hard to believe we’ve been here for 6 years, Bunsen. I miss quite a few posters who’ve left us but am glad so many new folks have joined us! It’s nice to have a positive, knowledgeable community. Makes a big difference.
I am trying to decide if I’m doing a 5k tomorrow night or not. Also trying to decide what to prepare for dinner. I’m hoping for a clear night so we can grill.
Jym, remember that the scale is just a tool and while you may have a specific weight goal, the number you get is perhaps more importantly a way of monitoring trends. As you continue to work out, you can lose fat, gain lean muscle and perhaps not lose as much weight as you expected or can hit a plateau. How your cloths are fitting, what you see when you look in the mirror, can be even more important indicia of what you are achieving than just a number on a scale.
