Today I met my sil for 90 minutes of XC skiing. We had a ton of fun. May have burned up as many calories talking as we did skiing. As others have said it was really cold and windy today. I wore too many clothes though, got to figure out how to dress properly.
So skiing on Saturday, treadmill yesterday and more skiing today.
Did 1 1/2 hours on bike trainer. Scaled back the heart rate to 125 after re-reading portions of the Maffetone book on low HR training. Going to a MAF 5 mile test tomorrow at 125 hr and see what my mile paces are. Hope the pace is faster than a fast walk. I’m committed through February. This is the third time in trying this program so hopefully it works and I stick with it.
Fail at getting outside this morning as I had intended. Didn’t sleep well and couldn’t face the 12 degrees. Speedwork on the dreadmill instead for a short run. More after work, hopefully.
MNKat - I’m tempted. I’m afraid once I go down that rabbit hole I’ll never come back. Probably should have listened to your advice and installed the special trainer tire on the rear wheel. I can see the wear already. Too lazy. Thought I would install new tires in the spring anyway.
I have an older Gsc10 garmin device that I never did anything with. Don’t even know if it is compatible with the garmin 235. Would this device measure wattage?
I was at 9875 steps before bed last night and had to walk a couple of rooms to put me over 10k.
Once the temp gets into single digits my body wants to go into shutdown mode. Real hard to stay motivated.
Ohio, the GSC 10 is a speed/cadence sensor and does not measure wattage. For that, you need a power meter of some type and a compatible head unit for the display. The Garmin Edge series of GPS Bike computers will suffice as a head unit for any power meter that is ANT+ compatible The Garmin 235 is not power meter compatible but us compatible with Garmin’s newer speed/cadence sensor.
I am very protective of my time outside as much as I am protective of routines. 99% of the time, I take the dog for his morning walk - I should say, “our” morning walk - I need it as much as him even if it’s not long!
Yesterday morning I woke up just a little after H. I hear him downstairs and I think I can hear the clinking of the dog leash. I hear the back door open. WHAT?! I went to the window and saw him heading out with the dog. I start frantically knocking on the upstairs window - “wth are you doing?!!” - that’s MY walk!!! I’ve told him over and over again that that morning walk is as much my mental health as the dogs! MAYBE he was trying to do me a favor in the cold, but I sure reacted in a way that I don’t think he’ll be doing it again soon!!
That’s funny, abasket - these past few days I’ve seen more “dads” walking their pups than usual. Our two are better behaved with me and I’m like you - I enjoy the time out with them a great deal more than Mr. Sabaray. Today I forced him out for a walk with us - only a mile as it is really, really cold. My pups would benefit from paw protection but I think I’d rather wrestle an alligator than try to get booties on them.
Pilates class yesterday did not kick my butt for once. I’m either getting stronger or she took it easy on us! I made a new recipe in the crockpot yesterday - beef with broccoli which was very good, surprisingly. I always think of the crockpot as something where you dump all the ingredients in at once - this required additions along the way, but the result was quite good.
sabaray- Did you feel Pilates was easier because you didn’t run in the morning?
abasket- that’s funny. I love walking my dog, but I just don’t have time in the morning because of having to get to work, so my husband does the walk later in the morning or afternoon. My old guy only wants one walk a day. I really enjoy walking him on the weekends, though. We are supposed to get some snow/ice in the morning and I’m worried about how my doggie will react. We haven’t had him in snow yet. He’s really picky about his footing and will not go down any stairs anymore except our 3 gentle front steps.
That could be, MOWC - Monday’s are usually 5 to 7 miles with hills - tiring. Honestly though, I don’t think the class was as difficult as usual - quite a few newbies. Still, it’s worth thinking about switching the run to Tuesday.
We are potentially going to get up to 24 inches of snow. I don’t think anyone is excited about that! Our pups still want two walks- in snow that’s a lot of work!
abasket, there are so many models - right now the weather channel is saying snow starts Friday, 1-3 inches, then 8 -12 Friday night and more (3-5) Saturday! So, maybe only 20 inches. Of course then it warms right up so there will be mud to look forward to! Hoping to get an outdoor run in Thursday before the snowpocalypse.
I got a fast 3.8 mile run in this evening. It was only 17 degrees, but no wind. It felt great! I was glad my pace was back to where it normally is, lately I have been pretty slow in the cold.
abasket-I am the same way with my dog walks. Don’t mess with my routine!
Well, it’s really cold but I just couldn’t face the treadmill - so I headed out for a run. 5 mile and change loop - wanted to try out my new shoes. I need to work on lacing a bit but they felt good, no ankle issues at all. Incredibly slow but it was nice to be outside.
Good job people! You are inspiring me to try and make it outside tomorrow after work - I can get out by 4:30 or so and it will only be low 20’s but if no wind, it might be ok. I walked the dog today and all sidewalks were clear - I admit I was itchy to run!!!
