“How many marathons have you done?”
Maybe a dozen. Maybe one. Maybe none. Running a marathon doesn’t make you a runner. Running makes you a runner.

(clapping hands!)

I am perpetually in awe of people who can run marathons. Or swim marathons. Or do anything with that level of stamina lol. =D>

Well, I went off the RA med and I am hurting. I am hurting in joints I didn’t even know existed lol. My joints have also started “popping” so that’s fun.

But no stomach problems! I will take it! (I hate, hate, hate GI problems.)

I have to make the decision this week of whether or not I want to teach in the fall. I’m supposed to and I LOVE teaching but I will be useless to my students in this state.

romani, I’m so happy and was touched to read that your father is getting on board with his research and will be there for your treatment.

I walked today outside–about 6.5 miles in all. In a moment of weakness, though, I made a beeline for the excellent tiny French bakery near to us. My trigger? On top of having a hungry day, I’m reading Reading Lolita in Tehran with the CC book group. The author of our book has talked a number of times about discussing literature over Persian tea or coffee with pastries. Oh, that beautiful word: Pastry! One chocolate croissant later… Dinner, however, was an eggplant. squash, and spinach gratin and half of a small game hen.

5.5 mile day. I know we will have a little more cold weather, but today was SO nice! Low 50s for my morning run and 71 after work for 3 miles from the office. So- no treadmill today! There are some good race pictures from Saturday (even though I was wearing a LOT of clothes) of me and my husband running together. Well, we were racing each other as opposed to running “together”, but we don’t get many of those. My daughter’s race picture was fantastic. I’m saying that because often our race pictures are horrific- knees are buckling, both feet flat on the ground, grimace on the face etc. Of course, in my finishing shots my right hand is squarely on the Garmin getting ready to stop it!

Romani- hang in there. Also glad you have good family support.

Same here weather wise. 70 lovely degrees. Ahhh! Ran in shorts and a tshirt. What a pleasure! Rain on and off for the next several days - but at least it’s not snow!

I had a treadmill, years ago. It sat unused, because I hated it enough that I found myself outside regardless of the weather. Sold it to an ultra-running friend who loves it. Today I had a dog agility lesson that left me literally dripping sweat–lots of small sprints–and then drove home and went for a three-mile run with the dog in the very light Pacific Northwest 50s and drizzling rain (i.e., our normal weather, October to March). In keeping with my determination not to let my very fit daughter beat me in our next race, I even did a set of the evil stairs (282 steps) in the local park. It’s been an incredibly wet winter here–we’ve set some sort of record for most rain ever recorded in December and January was only a bit better–but at this point we have daffodils and forsythia blooming, and my favorite is flourishing: Daphne. I have modified my regular route slightly to make sure I pass by all the Daphne in our neighborhood–it smells so good it makes me feel good.

I planted a daphne bush in my front yard to combat the disgusting smell of something I thought was horse manure… Wrong! It was the neighbor’s septic tank, because the wretched tank pumping co forgot to screw the lids on!!! Finally, I followed the smell, went there, and investigated… Sent Mr., our diplomacy personality, to talk to the neighbors who were not aware that they were gassing the entire 'hood. He brought some rubber gaskets and fasteners from Tacoma Screw (his favorite store, lol!) - problem solved. Guess what he did this past weekend?! He chopped 1/2 off the daphne bush claiming it was growing too close to the house!!! I was not happy.

My treadmill got some good action this winter even though I do prefer to be outside.

Thanks all for the support

I have been sore, sore, sore today BUT I managed to get out to vote in the Michigan primary. Steps to the voting booth are about the most important steps one can make IMO.

I’m hoping I’m feeling a little better tomorrow. I’d like to enjoy this unseasonably warm weather while it lasts (even though I’m supposed to avoid the sun… boo.)

I just really want to swim. I miss the water so much. I will get there!!

Keep up the good work, Romani! Someday, it will be your day.

Unseasonably warm weather here too and with Day Light Savings Time starting this weekend, outdoor cycling season is right around the corner. In the meantime, I’m taking advantage of the sun and clear weather to keep my new rubber bumper plates outside this week. The virgin rubber (as opposed to composite recycled rubber) stinks horribly at first until it airs out for a few days and there’s no way those plates are coming into my studio until the smell abates, lol.

“Day Light Savings Time starting this weekend…”

Oh those dirty little time thieves!!

Daughter-in-law is in labor. Have to run to court for my son and get continuance for a case he has, lol. He’s calmer than I am, haha.

romani, the best medicine for the body pains - swimming. I got rid of the huge lower back issues that I had for years, probably couple decades, I was even taken to ER on the stretcher once, the worst drive in my life, my back felt every little stone under the ambulance wheels. That happened because I simply could not get up from the floor at all. From this to now when I do not feel anything in my back, what a great relief!

Yay, Michael! Tell them good luck and congratulations from all their aunties and uncles here in the Exercise thread! Congrats to Grandpa Michael, of course.

How exciting, Michael! Good luck and fingers crossed.

I got a 6.5 mile run in last night, it was so nice outside! I’m hoping to run again tonight, it just depends on how hard it is raining.

MOWC - glad your race photos turned out well! The picture of me crossing the finish line at my first half marathon was so awful. I’m sure that if I had been a bystander seeing me cross the finish line that I would have been yelling for medics - I really looked like I was about to collapse and die!

Looking forward to hearing good grandbaby news later today, Michael!

I’d love to be able to swim to relieve pain but when I can’t even get in and out of the pool, swimming is just not gonna happen.

But one day!

My return to marathoning was in April 2009 after a 5 year break. I had a really good day (Country Music Marathon here in Nashville) on the first 80 degree day of the year when many others were dropping like flies. I really gathered myself up for the finish stretch through the cheering crowds (about 200 yards). I couldn’t wait to see the finish video, since I knew I was just flying! Well- it was hilarious. My feet were barely moving and I looked like I was about to die. I didn’t order a copy…

Lol!!! In my photos from one of my marathons, it looks like I am making a final stretch push to pass a woman twice my age who looks like she is just shuffling along. Of course, she was the fast one in her age group - in half-marathon. I ran the full, but most folks looking at the photo do not notice that our bib colors were different.

I have a friend who ran a terrific marathon up in Massachusetts at Bay State a few years ago. He placed in his age group and got a Boston qualifying time. His finish photo (ran around 2:45) with both feet off the ground, included an overweight male half-marathoner just ahead of my friend wearing sweatpants with a jacket tied around his waist.
