Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Congrats to the granddaddy!

Welcome back, CBBB, and high five on the weight loss. I signed up for that Wellcoin app, too – it syncs with my Fitbit. I’ve earned a lot of points, but there’s nothing local to me so I’m not sure how I’m going to use them!

I’ve lost track of people with foot aches and pains, so hoping all of you feel better.

PG, I’m retired too, I work out a lot, but what you’re doing is amazing. I will say that having a regular exercising schedule makes retirement work for me – I’m rarely bored. Today I did weights and went swimming for an hour in the morning, and I have a board meeting tonight that I’m walking to, so that’ll be about 4 miles. Yesterday I walked to my yoga class, and then took another walk in the afternoon because it was so beautiful.

I still have some of that smooshy stuff around my waste. Skin or fat don’t really know. I keep thinking of how much weight I might lose if I had a tummy tuck. Mind you this would be for performance reasons only and not for vanity. Based on that I’m sure I could get insurance to pay for it if I had my sports med doc perform the procedure to prevent running injuries like stress fractures!

I met with my advisor and our graduate student guardian angel (I don’t know her exact title but she’s the one who makes sure our lives are as easy as possible). We worked out a plan so that I could do a modified PhD schedule. It means putting off teaching for another semester which makes me sad because I love teaching… but we all agreed that my health was the most important thing.

So that is a little less stress on my mind.

Today was a little funny. I switched to another pain med and I feel quite a bit better (knees are almost painless but my back is bugging me quite a bit), but I am just absolutely wiped out. My energy level had been a little bit better but this week it plummeted.

I have almost hit my 5k steps today though! I am about 650 short right now and I will get it today even if I have to use my walker and walk in circles around the house lol.

Romani, good decisions on the academic part- you will “catch up” when the time is right. Wonderful your preceptors are understanding and accommodating!

Squishy stuff around the waist? Wait. Doesn’t most EVERYONE (especially females, in their 50’s who have had children) have squishy areas? Seriously! I don’t expect (because I don’t want the stress of that expectation) to have a fully firm body - I do like to eat and treat from time to time! I don’t think I’ve EVER seen (significant) body changes in a short period of time - I mean, over months - yes. Weeks, not really unless I would not be eating!

Rainy day. Gym time after work. Track and arc trainer. Lots of sweat it was too warm in there!

Welcome back, CBB. Good job on the steps, Romani- and with sorting out your obligations. Make care of yourself.

Keep in mind I am now working out where the “real housewives of (my area)” have been working out. These women are gorgeous, toned, and perfectly turned out! They’ve got years of this that I haven’t!

I really can’t blame childbirth, even twins, for squishy stomach, though. That was 23 years ago, I lost the weight immediately (actually too quickly from stress). I can’t really “blame” any tummy there! This is pure stress eating, too many lattes, cookies … !

Went to the doctor today. Stress fracture in my foot. :(. Good news is that it should be healed after 2 to 3 weeks in a boot. Bad news I’m going on vacation Saturday. Guess I won’t be packing those super cute sandals I bought.

Deb, you can still pack them and wear just one. thank goodness you checked it before the trip! Speedy healing.

So sorry, Deb. It should heal up fine, though. I would wear the cute sandal!

Aww man! Bad timing! Is this a vacation with lots of walking or a vacation where you just prop up in a lounge chair with a fruity drink?!

Get well soon!

So sorry deb :(. I fractured my foot before vacationing in Florida last year. It meant lots of time by the pool, but traveling was a pain!

Wishing you the best!

Thank you everyone for all the additional good wishes. Mom and Dad are a bit frazzled from fatigue and because the baby has jaundice and is spending all her time in the nursery under a light and can only be visited there by the parents. I started to tell them my story about how I was born 8 weeks premature and spent the first 6 weeks of my life in an incubator and therefore not to worry. But then I realized it sounded like the old “When I was a kid I walked 6 Miles to School in the Snow in my Bare Feet” tale so I just nodded my head in sympathy and kept my mouth shut.

Sorry to hear about the foot Deb. Definitely wear at least one of those sandals! Have a great time.

I worked out with my trainer today and went to a relax and restore yoga class earlier in the evening.
Congratulations on your new granddaughter, Michael. Very exciting!!
Hang-in there, Romani. You’re doing a great job all around.

So much easier to treat jaundice just after delivery than to go home and have to return to the hospital. I’m sure the new parents are worried, but it’s so common and treatable and then before long…forget-able!!! Hope they can get a little rest!

Thank you all for the well wishes.

I just received a wonderful, heartfelt email from the head of my department letting me know that the entire department is behind me. I might’ve cried a little. I’ve been really emotional lately- not sure if it’s from the meds or just being overwhelmed, but they were happy tears.

AND I hit my 5k steps! Woo!!! Only needed the walker for about the last 100 steps (back was starting to really hurt). The dog is still distrustful of the walker but now at least she doesn’t run away from it.

Best wishes to the baby (and parents!)

This was me 2 years ago! Because of my foot, H had said we’d take an Uber to the airport, instead of the T (subway). On the day we left Boston it was snowing/raining, though, so Uber rates were higher due to the increased demand. H decided that was too much so we’d go back to Plan A and take the T. I was SO angry, having to hobble along. Grrrrr!!

I really have no idea what’s going on with my foot now. When I had that broken bone 2 years ago, I know exactly what I did – missed the bottom step coming downstairs in the early morning. But now? Nothing I can think of. Can you get a fracture just from regular running?

Ankle is worse. Took a long walk yesterday and then walked around at the open house and I was in pain. Woke up in the middle of the night and had to take motrin. Have decided to stick with yoga and a little bit of lifting weights this weekend and see. If I still hurt like this next week I’ll see my doctor. I am really disappointed but I know I need to take care of myself. Running program doesn’t start until April 18, so I have some time.

CBB- Yes, you can. I know lots of runners who have gotten fractures in their feet from running. In my first foray into minimalist shoes in 2005 when Inwas heavier, Ingot a stress fracture right above the ankle bone protrusion. They heal well, though.

FallGirl- I hope your ankle comes around. I think we are all falling apart! My left hip tweaked just a little at the end of my run today. Otherwise, lovely south Florida run. Flat, flat, flat. Lots of old people walking little dogs. Heading to the beach soon. 5 miles done in my strange Nikes.
