Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Good racing everyone! Hope the swag was good! MOWC - nothing like spectator pressure. (I bet the 9 seconds are killing you!)

I still need to catch up on this thread.

Yoga early this AM, then spent 5 hours working at the church rummage sale. Not a traditional workout, but got my steps in and lifted a lot of heavy bags/boxes when we were taking it down. I’m done for the day.

It’s absolutely beautiful, so am thinking a long walk tomorrow.

Sounds like a great time at the race - now we need to know if PlantMom is hooked on racing!

Easy 7 miles today - shoes are nice and roomy with plenty of height in the toebox - don’t think I’ll be having any issues with my big toe peeping through. Little bit of slippage in the heel that I’ll remedy by lacing. I’m going to try them with my inserts on Monday but overall a winner. Followed up with Reformer class this morning and then had a private cooking class at a friend’s house.

And my Lulu stuff arrived - I love that bra! Just snug enough. It is a beautiful day here as well - I am voting for dinner out - somewhere with an outdoor patio.

Good job Sabaray!
I got 3.15 on my Garmin. I thought I sprinted fast enough to get under 28, but I clearly didn’t!
I got a cool cowbell with the race logo on it.

10 seconds or not, the cowbell is yours! 5k are tough!

I managed a 10K PR today - 1:05. It was MOWC chasing me that did it. I would love to feel smug about coming in ahead of her, except that she a) had just run an all-out 5K while I stood around and b) she started later than me.

Such a fun race with great company!

I would just like to clarify that I* finished first out of the 5 of us.

(That’s because I only ran a 5k and they all did 10ks. And mine started a half hour earlier than theirs. But still. I take my victories where I can!)

Great job, Pizzagirl You were quite fast.

Gertrude, congrats on the PR!

MOfWC, pretty awesome job to place second in the grandmasters. Kudos to your daughter - 2 min off 10k time is HUUUGE.

Waiting for a report from @C3Baker ! I think her race was today…

Track day. Mile warmup/warm down. Easy striding. 4x100, 4x200, 2x400. Felt good. Last 100/200/400 in spikes. Need new spikes. Both have torn uppers. Too bad. Loved these spikes. Fit like a glove. Probably will do a harder track workout tomorrow.

Ran a (very unofficial) 10k on the Beer Trail in about 49 min. I felt terrible for the first mile and a half, then my queasiness disappeared, and I finished strong and timed the finish just perfectly: I finished my run as Mr. was making the turn towards the parking lot. Sadly, we could not get any beer after the run - the wait at the brewery was loooong. So we stopped at a grocery store, and I picked up some imported from Germany grapefruit beer. Brats and beer on the front porch - that’s the dinner plan!

Wow, all that exercise today! I’m feeling like a lout! Congrats and extreme jealousy to the Nashville crew ! I too am waiting to hear from PlantMom about her thoughts from beginning to end of the race!

Spend 5-6 hours in the car driving today but still managed to get in…let me check…12,500 steps - guess I’ll have to take it! Lousy luck looking for shoes and athletic wear today - didn’t get to all the places we hoped and the spots we went just didn’t have the selection I was looking for. It was almost 80 in central Ohio today.

I’m so glad all of those who were able to make it to MOWC’s for the race and festivities had such a great time. I think it is very special that our online community has morphed into a community of real friendships.

Today was a great day. Led a 40 mile ride at 9:00 from my local bike shop bedecked in my new Sturdy Girls kit. Pink and blue bib shorts, jersey, windbreaker, socks and cap. When I got back to the shop, some of the whispered comments were priceless. The best I overheard was “He must be very secure about his masculinity to dress like that.” Lol. After helping with the BBQ (all the Sturdy Girls finally fessed up that they keep me around for my BBQ grill skills), I went home and finally got my playground open for the season. It was harder work than I remembered and took me a full 2 hours!

Tomorrow will be my day off from training, other than training how to overeat. Food tasting for my daughter’s wedding st 11:00. After that, getting her 3 pairs of shoes for indoor cycling as her B-Day present, then a birthday BBQ at the future in-laws house with my son and his wife and baby daughter as well as her finance’s sister with her twin 11 month olds and 4 year old also in attendance. Doesn’t get any better than that!

Michael, LOL about the pink outfit!! The comment was priceless. Mr. B gives you high fives and says that he too would have no issues with riding his decrepit mountain bike in that kind of outfit.

(Did I mention how I hate that bike? No one would even steal it from the bed of our truck no matter where we park it! No one!)

Mr. B and I should start a new CC thread titled Men in Pink. Wonder how many participants we would have, lol.

Mr R would happily join that thread. He owns more pink things than I do (2 vs 0) and has worn more dresses since we’ve been together than I have.

My joints are feeling better. I’m not sure if I’m getting used to the pain or if my medication is finally starting to work.

I went outside and enjoyed the weather today… and have the butterfly rash on my face to show for it :(. Luckily it seems like that’s my only sun reaction so I’ll definitely take it!

This holter monitor is freaking annoying though… 10.5 hours until I can take it off (not that I’m counting or anything).

Today is the first day that I’ve really been super unhappy with the way I look. Putting on so much weight so quickly has led to this weird thing of not recognizing the person in the mirror. I think that because the pain is going away, I’m starting to focus on other things… and this happens to be one of them. The only thing that’s helping me stay positive about it is everyone telling me that the weight comes off very quickly once the prednisone is done.

I’m just ready to stabilize. I can deal with all of this if I just know what is in store for me tomorrow. I don’t like making plans to do something (like swimming) only to wake up in the morning feeling like crap.

Just needed to vent a bit.

Romani, good to hear the pain gradually decreases. I know it is frustrating to even think about the weight, but it is true that what you gained on the medication should come off when you are off the steroid. So ignore the mirror for a bit. You need a good hat with a wide brim, like some hats sported at the horse races, to keep your face protected in addition to sunblock. Also, think of a higher SPF sunblock for the face because it is the part of the body that gets the most sun exposure.

Romani, I’m glad your joints are feeling better. Hopefully that’s a sign that everything your new doc has you doing is effective in managing your symptoms.

With the sunblock, keep in mind that not all sunblock is equal. With all the cycling I do, I get a lot of sun exposure. Historically, I’ve used sports sprays that are water resistant with a SPF of either 30 or 50. Thought I had the bases covered. Imagine my surprise when a dermatologist recently told me I had some pre-cancerous stuff on my nose. She advised me that the spray on sunblock is not nearly as effective as lotions and that I should use a lotion with zinc or titanium in it to create a physical barrier to the UV rays and not just a chemical one. For the face, she recommended a sunblock called Glytone with an SPF of 40. I’ve always hated putting creams and lotions on my skin. So last week I did a ride and used the SPF 50 spray. Nose ended up red from sun exposure. Yesterday I used the lotion. No sun reaction at all. Lesson learned. For my nose, which apparently is particularly sensitive now from the treatment I underwent, the lotion is it. The Glytone is not at all greasy feeling and rubs in very well so that you don’t feel like you have a clown face in white on when you apply it.

Something else for all of us who are active outside to think about is to make sure to wear good high quality sunglasses. Per the dermatologist, you want not only lenses that are UVA and UVB rated but also polarized. I had always associated polarized lenses as glare and comfort related but apparently polarization serves an important protective function too.

And Mr R is welcome to join my Men in Pink Club!

Lots going on while I’ve been sleeping! Love the outfit, Michael!
Romani- steroid weight gain is frustrating but will go away.
Abasket- driving is a step killer! So is flying. Good job anyway. Sorry the shopping was a bust.
Bunsen- I love grapefruit beer. We all went to a winery last night and picnicked on the grounds. We really lucked out with weather.
Plantmom will update when she has better electronics!

Finally read this MOWC. That’s so cool that the 5 of you had a fitness meet-up. Congrats to all and way to go Plantmom on your first race!

Count me in the grapefruit beer fan club! I love the Ballast Point grapefruit sculpin - not German, but really good.

It is another beautiful day here but I just plan on some light stretching today to work out the kinks. Romani, glad you could enjoy the outdoors yesterday - I know the weight issue is discouraging but it will come off. Continue to eat a healthy, balanced diet - your body needs it!

I have cut way back on my banana consumption and as a result, have been experiencing some painful lower extremity cramping. I think part of it is psychological (no banana, therefore I should be getting these) but I am leary of supplementing with potassium. I am already drinking a lot of water so am wondering if it could be an issue with salt intake. I don’t add table salt to anything . For cooking I use Maldon sea salt. I reviewed a list of potassium rich foods from Mayo and feel like I am getting enough through diet. In case you can’t tell, April is my clean-up/fix-up the body month!
