Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Romaini, not to diminish your feelings but I also think that LOTS of people have a shockeroo when they look in the mirror after a long winter - and see (white) skin again!!! Maybe you should treat yourself to one loose fitting outfit that can be worn lots of places - some comfy pants and loose shirt or something - that will make you feel less focussed on this temporary weight gain.

Sabaray, melons and watermelons are good banana substitutes.

My non-running kid just texted me that she finished a 10k! I am shocked that there are organized races and CrossFit gyms in that forgotten part of the planet!

Plantmom and Fireandrain did a long walk this morning while I ran and then walked back with them. Beautiful morning.

Thanks all. I’m feeling much better this morning. My Holter device is off

I think yesterday was just a poopy day because I was hooked up to the device and feeling gross from that.

Another beautiful day today and my windows are open. I’ll be staying inside but I can feel the warmth coming in with the breeze

Re: clothes. I have always been one to wear super baggy clothes so luckily I still have several shirts that fit (though only one pair of jeans…). I absolutely hate shopping with a passion so having to go out and shop would feel like a punishment :stuck_out_tongue:

Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday!

Bunsen, would you believe that I really don’t like melons? At Costco this morning they were sampling “watermelon water”. I’m thinking why? And coconut coffee? 150 calories a cup? And everywhere I looked there were these significantly overweight individuals loading coconut coffee and watermelon water into their carts. They had heard watermelon water and “bulletproof” coffee was good for them. They also had Coke and Fritos. Sigh.

On a completely unrelated note, I have probably had 100+ blood tests (without exaggeration) in the last several months. Without a doubt, my favorite title of a blood test came from my last round: “Dilute Russell’s viper venom time”

I just have so many questions about how this test came into existence…

D’s cross fit gym sponsored a 5k today. D helped pace her friend to her very first race. And they ran the whole way, no walking. D felt proud that she was able to slow down and help her friend.

Went for a nice walk this morning and going golfing this afternoon. Love this burst of warm weather!

What a cool thing your daughter did, @deb922 ! Enjoy golfing.

Congrats to your D, bunsen! In a similar story my D was a who was a competitive dancer in HS never understood her friends who were cross country/track athletes. She started running about 2 years ago, has run several 5K’s and will run her first 10K next Sat. She ran 10 miles with her BFF (the former cross county captain) last weekend. She is my biggest cheerleader.

Ran 1/2 mile than walked 3 1/2 , then ran another 1/2 today. Plan to go to yoga later. Training program starts tomorrow and I can’t wait!

Kudos to Bunsen’s and Deb’s daughters. Great reports!

My daughter was funny about the 10K yesterday. Being the offspring of a running snob, she said she was griping to herself about the fact that they were giving out finisher medals for the 5K and 10K. She thought “That’s ridiculous. A medal for a 5K/10K! I’m not even going to take one!” Then after she put it all out there and had a 2 minute PR, she snatched that medal right up!

I had a high school friend-boy who ran cross country back when nobody exactly did that or cared anything about it. He’s the first person I consciously remember as being a runner. I could not WAIT to see him again at a class meet up a few years ago and tell him all my running stories and how I was now a runner. (We actually emailed a few times in advance of the party since I was on the committee.) Well- he’s a lovely man, but short and very overweight. I remembered him as a tall beanpole! People change… He was surprised I was a runner now.

Thanks, BB that was really helpful. I had no idea there was detergent that could help!

I pulled out the SPF 50 today and am going to play around with pup in the back yard for a bit. She went to the puppy park for the first time in months yesterday and she was a very, very happy pup.

Spent about an hour outdoors (mostly in the shade) with pup. I managed to pull out and fill up her baby pool and played fetch for a bit.

This is by far the most activity that I’ve done in a while. My back was bothering in the end but I was mostly ok. And no sun effects!

The whole Romani family is very much enjoying the sun after a very gray winter.

Outside time is good for us all physically and mentally!

And I got a lot of it today - lots of digging, wheelbarrowing, shoveling, raking, etc. at my community garden today. Worked outside at home a couple hours too - those pesky fall leaves and myrtle DO NOT mix - down on my hands and knees with a hand rake to try to get those suckers out!

Figured I had abused my knees enough today so instead of a run took a WONDERFUL 5 mile bike ride - wanted to go longer but I had a little panic attack that the “burning” smell I was smelling as I rode past my house was my sweet potato in the oven! - so cut the ride “short.”

About to take the dog out for a nice evening walk and will surpass 20,000 steps today. Man, I need another day of weekend!!!

I pop in and out of this thread because I cannot keep up with it.

I have a question for the runners.

About 12 years ago I went to a running store and they fitted me with a shoe. So I have been buying the same shoe and just the newer model when they wear out. I never need to break in the new ones.

Recently I read that you should mix up your shoes. I have had numerous problems with stress fractures in my feet over the years so I don’t want additional problems. I have even had fractures in the navicular bones in both feet. I do not have the good sense to take a couple of days off if I experience pain. I feel like if I asked at the store they would just try to sell more shoes because that is what they do.

I run 90 percent of the time on the treadmill and the rest on the banked track at the gym. I also limit the incline to prevent stress on the navicular bone. I am in my late 50’s. I also fall a lot for my age.

TIA.

I think we should have a three day weekend every week!

Costco, grocery shopping, took Mr. Sabaray to the big box athletic store for new shoes, dog walk, grilled chicken, dog walk, now cleaning up said kitchen mess! Whew!

I’m a slacker today with barely over 10,000 steps. Oh well.

Congrats to your D’s, BB and deb922. I’m glad the weather is cooperating for so many of you. Romani, I’m happy you had some fun time outside with the pup.

Alrighty. Race report follows. Oh but first I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed meeting fellow people of the thread over the weekend. They’re a great group, even more so IRL than here on the page. With their patient guidance, I was able to make it through the 10K race with results I couldn’t be happier about. I finished with a time under 1:04 and an average pace of 10:16m/m. Woohoo! As DH said, your were NOT DFL, DNF, or DNS. Whew. And I now have a PR, a medal, and a shirt. Yeah, my face was red and sweaty, but I made it. It’s kind of like childbirth–the more time that passes, the easier it all seems  So who knows? Maybe there will be another race in my lifetime, lol. In all seriousness, I’m grateful for this whole group. The support I’ve received–me, who said once on this thread she’d never be able to run a mile without collapsing into a sweaty, red-faced, heaving puddle–is something special. Thank you everyone here for the years of assistance, beginning with the C25K suggestions, and special thanks to MoWC, Pizzagirl, FireandRain, and Gertrude! I wouldn’t havedone it without you all.

Just a walking day today. Started with 5 miles in the park w/ Fireandrain and MoWC, and capped it with 1.5 on a very mild Florida evening with DH.

Yay, PlantMom. Got you got home without incident.

MaterS- Lots of times newer models of shoes have significant changes and no longer work for someone. I would recommend going to a good specialty running store. I also would avoid the banked track. How often do you change out your shoes? 300 miles is what I would suggest- or 6 months. I happen to believe in having at least 2 pairs of shoes to rotate- and I do believe in having different models, but some people prefer to stick to the same model that works for them. Why do you fall? I fall, too, but I wouldn’t say “a lot” and I would be concerned. At our ages falling is not a good thing! Keep posting!

Ditto what MOWC said Mater! When you are on the treadmill, how far/long are you running on average? How many days a week - I’m wondering if your feet need some days off!

Plantmom, I am SO impressed that your first race was a 10K - what?! Crazy! Good for you - a 5k will be a piece of cake now! The most I’ve done is 10k - and I’m OK with that!!!
