Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Hmmm, regarding my post above, I am being prevented from posting a working link to an article posted on Facebook.

Ok slightly OT but tapping into the CC knowledge-base. The sticky stuff (it was like a gel) from the hotler monitor has left a very painful spot on my chest. It looks like the skin was torn off. I don’t know if it was an allergic reaction or what.

Has anyone had something like this happen? I have benadryl and antibiotic cream but I don’t know which to use and I’m afraid of irritating it more lol.

MaterS - I’m concerned that you need to take days off. The key words that you mentioned were feet stress fracture, banked track and late Fifties. I have navicular problems and it is always a result of overtraining. Running on inclines can be a problem too. I’d try two different kinds of shoes to strengthen different parts of your feet. If stress fractures have been a problem you might want to try Hokas for your alternate shoe. Also consider cross training such as cycling, swimming, rowing. I worry more about feet that I do knees, calves, thighs or hips for a runner in their late fifties.

Michael - I just googled it and if this was the article, I thought it was excellent. https://gmb.io/self-knowledge/

Yes, that is it! Thank you! GMB has a very good approach to movement based body weight training, focusing on developing strength, coordination and flexibility as outcomes of training for sequences of movements. They offer programs without any equipment, with basic equipment like pull-up bars and with specialty equipment like parallettes and rings. For the last 6 months, I’ve been training with their parallettes program and will take a crack at their rings program starting in a couple of weeks. Their website has a ton of free info both in text and video formats.

Lovely, lovely day here in my neck of the woods! I did my homework, and then Mr. and I decided that it would be a waste of a summer-like day to spend the rest of it indoors (or weeding). So we skipped lunch and opted out for an early dinner at a local cafe with an outdoor patio, then went for a long walk along the river.

I am somewhat ticked off that I missed my Fitbit-assigned calorie burn by 2 (!) calories yesterday. Lol.

Congrats, plantmom on your first race!

Another beautiful day here - if I didn’t have a big work meeting I’d be playing hooky!

Garmin tells me 5.65 miles this morning. Glad I took a rest day yesterday.

Good article, Michael - ohio, thanks for linking it for us!

Thanks all. I will try to get to the running store this week for a new fitting.

I am not overtraining, but I have been guilty of it in the past. I also gave up any kind of incline training and with the help of a PT modified my stroke on the rowing machines.

I am interested why everyone said to give up the banked track. It isn’t a competition banked track. There are seniors who push walkers around the track. My problem with the track is the fools who wave dumbbells around while walking.

The banked track can stress parts of your feet. If you weren’t having any problems, it would probably be ok, but you are. If you are doing any significant mileage on it, there can be a problem. Do they change directions on it every other day? That’s important, too.

Ahh, so that’s the reason our gym changes direction every couple of days! Good to know!

Mater, I don’t think you shared how often/far you are running as well - clearly, you are having issues so whatever the frequency/distance is, you’re having issues - but might be also good to know the full pic of what you’re running.

Romani, I have no idea of the chest sore - hope it goes away quickly!

So the pain is mostly in my head… literally

Pain doctor said I probably have Central Pain Syndrome which can be caused by autoimmune disorders like RA and Lupus. They explained it as my brain now amplifies pain signals which wouldn’t bother most people. Apparently it often happens when there is brain trauma.

They’re trying me on a new med so fingers crossed as always

So many posts to catch up on! I’m glad to hear that the Nashville crew had successful races and a fun time! My marathon on Saturday went OK, I improved my time by 5 minutes so that’s a good thing and I feel as if I learned a lot also. I ran with a pace group for the first 18 miles and that was a great experience. The pacer was fantastic - he talked us through everything and had so much good information. I know a lot of pacers don’t really say much and are just there to keep a given pace, but this guy was like running with a personal coach. I was trying for a 3:50 race but the closest pacer was this guy at 3:45. So I went with him and it was great, but by mile 18 I just couldn’t keep it up. I dropped back and I remember that it actually felt good to have some quiet time and be running by myself instead of the cluster of people with the pacer and the constant talking. I ended up at 3:50:44 so a little bit over my goal. There’s always the next race…

Unfortunately H did not have a good race. It was a beautiful sunny day but it got very warm and he has more trouble in the heat. He also went out too fast and so he ended up not getting the BQ qualify that he had hoped for, and in fact he was 3 minutes slower than his last (first) marathon which really bummed him out. It was hard to be happy about how I did when he was so down about his race. A day later he was feeling a little better about things and already talking about what training he needs to work on and how he could improve.

Today is a very busy day at work but I am planning a short run tonight to loosen up these tight muscles.

Congrats, C3Baker! That’s really interesting about the pacer - how cool of him to mentor everyone along. Sorry that your DH was disappointed with his race, but it sounds like he’s taking the right attitude for next time.

The heat does seem to be back - we will hit 90 here in the inland areas of San Diego today. I’m heading into work feeling refreshed & revitalized - just hope that feeling will last past the first hour!

I have history of stress fractures. I currently do not have any issues and I want to keep it that way.

I am not overtraining. I have learned my lesson.

You know, the pitfalls of competing (from a non-competing person’s point of view… ) - finishing a 26 mile run - 26 miles!!! - and still feeling you didn’t succeed - that’s so tough! I applaud you and your H C3Baker for your vim and vigor getting out there and completing that marathon!

Nice race, C3Baker! I’m sad for your H, but it sounds like he has the right attitude going ahead. Heat can really sap your energy.

C3B- we were talking about you and wondering how your (and your H’s) race went! 44 seconds over goal is extremely good- especially on a warmer day. Congratulations. I’m sorry your husband is disappointed, but such is marathoning! There are SO many variables, and there is never a guarantee of improving or hitting your goal. It sometimes seems like blind luck if everything goes well.

Great job, C3Baker and H! Heat is a killer for me. With these really long races, so much could happen during training and during the race. You never know what kind of weather Mother Nature will dish out, too. I’m glad to hear your H is not giving up because of this setback. It took my friend 5 races to qualify for her Boston, and with every race she learned something new. Fingers crossed for him.

If anyone likes to run downhill, there is a good marathon held here in WA called Light at the end of the tunnel. It is a Boston qualifier run on a gravel trail, and there is a decent elevation drop, but it does not feel like you are barreling down the mountain! I have not done it, but my friend was raving about it.

Great job, c3baker!
