Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I’m tired just reading all that DMD!!!

Going to have to use most of my free “minutes” this week to take care of outside yard needs. We’ll see what I can manage besides gardening exercise wise. Told myself not to fret over this. We’ll see if I listen to “my self”.

I think my body is craving healthy food after conference food and weekend food the last several days. My lunch: roasted beets and beet greens with clementines - it’s colorful!!!

I tried to rescue the ill-fated sock. I was too slow.

Fingers crossed for your appointments BB. Is there anything worse than the butt pain from gardening? It gets me and tortures my husband every time.

Tough exercising, dmd77. Sorry to hear about the trip and fall.

sabaray, I felt like donning a cone of shame after dropping the sock! I envy your lemon oiled clean house as well as your easy run.

MoWC continues to inspire  Hope you’re having a great time!

I planned a long run today after the beach week of generally short interval runs (1-2 miles). This morning I bandaged up the toes and made it to 9.5-10 miles (Fitbit tracker crashed several times). I’m building a serious case for a Garmin. Recommendations welcome  I am feeling pretty tired now. This distance, coupled with the heat (72-82 during the run), is definitely a challenge for me. I took some Clif gels along with me and ate a few of the squares at water breaks starting after the first hour. They seemed to help, I think?

PlantMom, this made me ill to see, but REI has the Garmin 235 on sale during their anniversary sale that begins ont the 20th. $80 off, so $249 instead of the $330 that I just paid. I just got the catalog and of course it’s at home - I don’t know if you need to be a member to get the deals, but if so, it might be worth spending the $20 to join.

Wow, sabaray! That seems like an awesome deal.

I am now getting into a worry mode. What if my hip sidelines me for a while and will not have enough time to train for the half in August? I do not want to be known as a person who signed up for the race just to get the shorts! So my plan is to run it hell or high water…

PlantMom, you are definitely ready for a Garmin. Running in 80 degree heat is a huge challenge, so kudos for sticking with your distance.

I love my (brand-new) Garmin 235 (it replaces the 225 I broke when I fell last week). @PlantMom — just a note that if you get the 235 at REI, you’d get about 9% back next year on your payment, as a member rebate (which you can use next year to buy something else at REI).

I am now itching to check my mailbox for that REI flyer, LOL!

Well, Ms. Fitbit is NOT syncing again - hasn’t for the last couple of weeks but I’ve not found the time to call in. Called in today and the next step is to wait for some Fitbit employee to contact me about options. I’m hoping that one “option” is to replace the Charge HR and maybe replace it with the Alta.

If anyone has any reason to sway me from not getting the Alta - please let me know! I will lose the HR and the stairs - wish I could keep the HR but not heartbroken about it. Will gain the hourly reminders which I am a big fan of and looks like it also is more waterproof - another plus (for splashes, rain, etc. , not swimming!)

Hoping to have an end to this saga soon!!

One question for any Alta owners - how do you find the read-ability of the Alta screen. I have horrible eyes without my readers - but I can manage to make out the Charge HR screen.

Garmin is releasing a new tracker with HR and GPS. Rainmaker reviewed it today. It looks really great. Readability of Alta is good inside but bad in outdoor light. I look at my phone if I want a count outdoors. The Garmin (new tracker) has stairs.

MOWC, yes, I have ridden those bridges! For many years I did the City to Shore MS 150 that went to Ocean City NJ and back. I would stay overnight at my parents’ condo in Atlantic City so after doing the 100 mile option the first day, I would sling my duffle bag over my back and ride the bridges from Ocean City into Summers Point and again into Atlantic City. The worst thing about all of those bridges was always the wind. It always seemed to be blowing in the wrong direction and was fierce. One year the group I was with had a 22 mph avg for the first 90 miles and as we hit the bridges going into Ocean City it felt like we were in a high speed wind tunnel. By the time we arrived at the Convention Center, our avg speed had dropped to the mid 15’s. It was ridiculous!

BTW, it’s so funny that my old neighbor Wendy, from when we were teens, is one of the friends you were with. Such a small world.

Wow:

I figured you could relate, Michael! Yes, it is funny that you and Wendy were neighbors. She just made us great banana daiquiris.

I think the new Vivifit sounds really great.

Wow, what a device! Wonder if it can do the laundry for me!!!

Well, I am TICKED OFF at Fitbit. I got an email (what they told me to expect to start the process of next steps since the agent on the phone after multiple calls has no more options for me). The email is all apologetic but says that they want me to do ONE MORE THING before they can consider “options under warranty” - a factory reset. Apparently different than the multiple other resets I’ve done!!! So. Annoying!!!

Why did they not suggest this on the phone? How many dances do I have to do to get a working product?! I’ve spent more months with this not working than working!

Not sure if I’m going to do it. I really want to send an email back saying NO - YOUR problem to fix.

My Alta charger broke- the clamp snapped off on one side. I called Fitbit and then are overnighting me a new one- no charge. I’m happy with that. I can charge it only if I hold the charger on- for now.

Thanks for the Garmin and REI info. The vivosmart HR GPS sounds great! What would be the advantage of the Garmin 235 watch over the new vivosmart? The large watch face itself, or is there more functionality in the watch?

I feel your aggravation, abasket. I wish Fitbit would devote some time to fixing its tracking app. My Charge HR would be almost perfect if it worked the way it was supposed to.

Over 21000 steps Saturday. Tired, but no trouble. Not bad for a 62 yr. old lady.

Kudos, morrismm! Are you also a Fitbit user?

It looks like Fitbit is going through some growing pains. I like the tech and the device, but they might lose ground to competition if these little snafus continue.

For running, you want the 235. Display, better GPS, better HR. The customization of the screens, too.

It was a crazy weekend and I left early this morning on a business trip so this is my first opportunity to post. I am very happy to report that my friend did great in the Cleveland marathon! He ran 3:25:25 and he needs a 3:30 to qualify for Boston, so he should be good. I’ve only exchanged texts with him and he said it was a fun day - I’m sure that’s because he was able to meet his goal. I’ll see him Friday morning and hear more details then.

I am in El Paso right now which is like being in a giant convection oven. I went for a run when I got in and it was 90 degrees with 20 mph winds. I only did 3.1 miles and it was awful! It’s going to take me too long to get acclimated here but I am hoping to struggle through a short run tomorrow after work. It was suggested that it is better to run in the morning, but I need to be ready to leave at 7:00am which would mean running at 5:00am and I’m just not comfortable running in the dark in an unfamiliar location. It doesn’t seem safe to me.

Well, we got talked into doing a RAGNAR race in Washington DC with our Back on My Feet team. Actually, I got talked into it - H wanted to do it all along. It’s in September but I need to get busy with the planning.

MOWC - it sounds as if you had a great time and it’s really cool that you met up with CC friends!

abasket - I’m really sorry to hear about your Fitbit woes. I would be really ticked about it.

Bunsen - I hope you get good news on your hip issues and can get back to running before long. You’re in such great shape, it won’t be any trouble for you to get yourself ready to run a half.
