Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Online news blogs often bring out the worst behavior in people or perhaps just induce the worst people to post comments. My daughter stopped doing online videos and photo spreads for a major print publication in Philly that has an online presence because the comments made by many viewers were just so offensive and snarky that she decided the negative vibes were just not worth the publicity.

Been on the sidelines for the last 5 days–with all the gardening I did, I must have touched poison ivy, even though I was careful about covering up. I really react to the stuff.

One area on my shin was really itchy and I foolishly kept scratching it. Looked at it the next morning and it was flaming red and hot. I thought it would go away if I applied neosporin but it was even worse by night.

H insisted on taking me to the ER where I was diagnosed with cellulitis. I got IV antibiotics right away and a prescription for oral antibiotics. Instructions from the
doctor–dont do anything for a 3-4 days, keep the leg up (higher than your heart–not easy to find a way to do this). Said it would look a lot worse before it got better.

I am finishing up the 3rd day of this routine and feel like a slug. Today I did some walking–not very far–just a mile and it was fine. Leg is still red and the doc was right–it looks a lot worse. I hope I will turn the corner soon. It is hard to stay still becsuse it isnt painful to do so. I have a walk for a non-profit group where I am a board member so my goal is to rest until that walk on the weekend–it is only 3.5 miles. I raised $1500 so I feel like I’d be a fraud if I didnt walk.

Sorry for the long tale of woe–needed to vent a bit. FWIW I love my Fitbit Charge HR.

Wow, Bromfield. Glad you went to the ER. Sorry that happened.

Bromfield, so sorry! I’m so glad you had it checked right away. I hope you see some improvement tomorrow.

That’s terrible, Bromfield. Hope it resolves quickly.

Well, I must have really returned to my strength training routine with unbridled enthusiasm - my arms, shoulders and chest have a delightful case of DOMS, lol. But it’s raining here again!!! My cycling training partners and I just spent a half hour texting each other about how much we hate indoor training. I’m going down to my studio now to attempt to discipline myself to do it, one partner gave up and lifted instead and the other, who is the most diligent did a grueling 95% lactate threshold interval ride - but she has to, she’s competing in the Masters’ Nationals in June ;).

P.S. She just texted us a picture of her bike on the indoor trainer. In her water bottle cage is an “adult” sippy cup. It’s a wine glass full of white wine inside a clear plastic no spill sippy cup. That girl really knows how to train :)!

Oh my goodness, Bromfield. It is so hard to make these calls: does it warrant an ER trip now or can it wait? So glad you did not wait!

Bromfield, how awful! I hope you feel better soon.

Good call by your hubby, Bromfield! Hope you feel better soon.

Bromfield, I’m call you were persuaded to go to the ER - cellulitis can be tricky - and the sooner you get care the better! Follow the doctor’s orders!!!

Raining here too a little earlier so I did cardio/interval training inside - those push ups KILL ME!!! Polished off the night with a leisurely pup walk when the rain finally stopped - just now , at dusk!

Feel better Bromfield!

@Bromfield2 : I had to google cellulitis. It sounds like the ER was a good choice, and I hope recovery is quick, complete, and straightforward.

Bromfield - speedy recovery!

Rainy and cold tonight. Did intervals on the treadmill. 8x400s at :75. .2 walk/jog in between.

Hypothyroid levels have gone up (TSH levels.) Increasing my synthroid dosage. Hope it’s nothing to be concerned about. Doc asked if I was tired, cold and irritable. Told him I was a 59 year old man living in snowy, 30 degree weather in NEOhio. Hell yes I’m tired, cold and irritable!

Got my REI flyer!! Yes, there is that lovely Garmin 235 on sale plus the 20% off coupons…

There is also a $20 REI giftcard to Fitbit blaze or Alta buyers.

Decided to run a short loop through the neighborhood, about 2.5 miles. Hip was not happy. However, I think I can squeak a half on it if needed. Appointment is coming up soon!

What a story!

That’s incredible!

Love that story. Some important thoughts for anyone facing daunting challenges.

Get well soon, bromfield! D had cellulitis in her knee when she was in HS (she was on two dance teams).

Got my training run in this AM and it felt really good.

Last Boardwalk run. Heading home this afternoon. 5 miles done. Not much wind this morning.
