Gertrude- that was the big problem with our group runs here that were set up by Nashville Striders. I was OK back in 2009 or so when I was faster, but still was pretty much at the back. Starting in 2011, my daughter and I could barely keep anyone in sight that was doing the full distance. Slower folks tended to be shortening the runs. We felt like there was almost no point in going to the runs, except for the aid stations and the fact that it helped to know others were out there! We weren’t all that slow, either, but for that group we were! One 12 miler we did it was clear that the orgnanizers were waiting for us to come through to pick up the aid station. They were very nice about it- and encouraging- but it was still a little discouraging since we were doing pretty well for us!
I’m at 24000 steps and not sure 30000 will happen. I’m really not in the mood to do a bunch of extraneous walking and I’m going to watch my daughter’s track meet tonight where my butt will be firmly planted in the bleachers!
This is all your fault, all of you. Went to Lululemon today to buy two tank tops–a self-reward for finishing a nasty yard project–and came home with two tank tops and the Align Crops. “I’ll just try them on, I thought. They can’t be that nice.” Well, hellfire and darnation, they were. Fortunately, I deserve them. It really was a nasty yard project.
Great job on the long runs, MoWC and Gertrude!! I’m impressed with your par 4, deb! And keep it up, Fallgirl.
I had no step goals for the day, but walked with H this morning (had to interrupt our walk to run home for the camera–our osprey chicks have hatched. Crummy photos, but I can’t resist trying to snap fierce mom and the really gawky baby). After the walk I did a 5K run–11’15" pace in a sunny 82 humid degrees. We’re having a little celebration for a friend’s 18 yo birthday/graduation. My steps will be curtailed by KP I think.
I made the 30000 steps! Turns out I was running around the infield cheering for my daughter and walked enough to and from the car and restaurant to make it!
My daughter did really well, the track meet was so much fun. There were little bitty kids in some of the heats, and old people! Also some 4:30 milers who lapped my daughter while she still had well over a lap to go. She was just under 7:30 in the mile and I think about 1:38 in the 400. She wasn’t anywhere near last! She said it was a whole new level of hurt, but she had fun. It was all very congenial and fun to watch.
^^That had to be fun to watch. Did watching give you any desire to compete yourself with either the little kids OR the old people?!!
I was a little short on my challenge steps - I made a wild goal of 26,200 steps on this thread last night. The day ended up including several “have to” activities - including 2.5 hours of driving so I didn’t make 26K steps. Did get 22-23 k though so there’s that. A beautiful, amazingly enjoyable run at dusk - sometimes I wonder what makes the “magic” happen on a run.
Wow, MOfWC, your non-runner daughter ran an under 7:30 mile? And also ran a 400? Awesome! You must be very proud of her. Mile is a tough event, IMO. It is one heck of a looooong sprint.
We ended up being stuck in traffic, stuck at the airport, stuck in traffic again… Too much sitting and too little walking/moving. Oh well. Mr says it was meant for me to give my hip a rest. I think sitting hurts it more than any moving activities.
I hit 21,000 steps yesterday. 1/2 running and 1/2 walking. I haven’t done hills for awhile so I did some treadmill hills yesterday. I’d ramp up the treadmill to 15 degrees incline and 5 mph. When my HR got above 160, I’d ramp it down to 0 degrees incline and 3.5 mph and continue at that level until my HR got below 115. I repeated the same 15 degree/5 mph and 0 degree/3.5 mph for an hour. Probably did over 10 treadmill “hills” at approximately .15 miles each.
Decided to walk 4 miles during the evening to walk off a Ben & Jerrys weak moment.
Looking to do an 800 meter time trial late this afternoon for a “gut check”.
I don’t really want to race on the track. The kind of training I would want to do (like Ohio does) scares me due to the risk of injury. Plus- you are just so…visible…on the track! This would have been a perfect meet for that kind of thing, though.
Great workout, Ohio, and good job on the steps, everyone.
I’m not surprised about the HR issue with the FitBits. I just don’t see how that technology at that price point can be very accurate.
I’ll one up you on the Ben and Jerry’s, but at least it isn’t in my house! We went to Jeni’s ice cream last night after dinner/track meet and it was fantastic. It’s very fresh ingredients and about as healthy as ice cream can be. Fortunately, it isn’t very convenient for me. The flavors are incredible, though.
My daughter doesn’t have spikes or racing flats, and she said she felt like her Brooks Launches looked like Hokas compared to everyone in their flats/spikes.
Also- I got reminded yesterday in my long run how helpful gels/fuel can be. I often don’t use nutrition for a 10 mile run, because it just isn’t that long, but I did take a Huma with my yesterday and ate it around 5 1/2 miles at a water stop. I really think it helped. I finished strong with my fastest splits in my last couple of miles on the hardest part of the course.
Angry email sent back the “Fitbit Team” regarding my Charge HR. I followed their directions to a tee for the “last ditch effort” and now my watch has no time on it. I AM DONE.
Feeling kind of gleeful this morning–first time ever, I did a two-mile training run at sub-11-minute pace (keep in mind all my routes have hills). I run with the dog and this morning we walked out of the house (I’d warmed up inside, because I always do, because these things happen) and he immediately saw a dog he really doesn’t like (who really doesn’t like him), so I took off fast to get us out of there… and then I realized I felt pretty good, so I figured I’d just keep pushing and see how we did. The dog wanted to run, I wanted to run, and we did our two miles in just under 22 minutes, and that’s counting the dog’s tree breaks. Now off for a short swim before DH and I go wine tasting–which is just an excuse to drive out into the countryside.
I’ve always felt that spikes were more of a mental thing for middle distance runners on all-weather tracks. Don’t really know if they have a technical advantage or not? I couldn’t race without them.
Abasket- I would call them again and demand (nicely) that your call be escalated. You clearly need a replacement.
Ohio- I think she needed road racing flats for the mile. Something like Skoras or Salmings. When you are running faster than usual you are on your forefoot more and the clunky trainers aren’t the best- plus they are heavier.
Fun, albeit brief weekend visit with D and her SO - yesterday we visited the farmer’s market (homemade goat cheese and bread - yum!), he got a tour of our town, we had a huge dinner at our local wood fired pizza place and then visited our local craft beer tasting room. So not the best weekend diet wise, but it was fun! One of our dogs is absolutely in love with him - wouldn’t leave him alone for an instant! It was very cute but I think D was upset that the dogs were so interested in him and not her!
abasket, I hope the Fitbit issue is resolved soon. Absolutely ridiculous. I haven’t been wearing mine today because I was getting too fixated on the steps. I haven’t been allowing any rest time and I need it. Every day doesn’t need to be a 15,000+ day.
Congrats to your D, MOWC - I love seeing and hearing about her progress! My legs feel much better today after some rest - I need to figure out how to balance Pilates and running because what I’m doing now just isn’t working well. I keep telling myself I can do this.
Sounds like a wonderful way to spend the evening/weekend Sabaray - food and drink with family - really, a great way to spend time. You gotta eat, right? And you stay plenty busy during the week .
I did send a very direct email to the Fitbit team that emailed me last week with the last ditch effort to try. I was clear and firm in that I have paid enough of my time, energy and patience in trying to get the dang thing to work, now it was time for them to step up to the plate. I told them that I wasn’t a “casual” user of the device and that I was relying on it to truly be part of my daily fitness routine.
My last paragraph to them: Please recognize my effort and stand behind your product and work with me to replace this unit with another Fitbit product. It is totally unacceptable that my fitness band is not doing what it’s intended purpose is - to keep track of my fitness, build a history of change or progress and keep me motivated to better my health and movement."
