Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Wheelbarrows, core, arms, shoulders and back. Almost a full body exercise, lol. And that’s not counter your partner!

Here is a part of the abstarct of one relatively recent paper summarizing the findings of a number of low-carb diet (LCD) studies:

I will see if I can get it through my library access…

Michael- Still on the iPad?

Right now I have computer access.

I was just wondering about Water Mellon.

Lol, MOfWC. I was womdering, Dragon Naturally Speaking or Siri?

Haha, I didn’t even see that. Yes, I was using my eye pad (sorry, couldn’t resist) and it auto corrected.

I had a pleasant bike ride over to the park on this gorgeous Sunday morning. H and I took an easy hike through the nature preserve where we saw tortoises, brilliant scarlet milkweeds, sticky huge tarflowers, the first tiny mustached tiger beetle of the season, a red-tailed hawk soaring with the vultures, paths yellow with large bachelor buttons, butterflies on redroot, and tiny, ripe native blueberries we could not resist stopping to snack on for oh…15-20 minutes. All was wonderful until I returned to my bike and found the front tire completely flattened. H rode home and got the car to give my poor bike and me a lift home! We’re not sure what happened to the tire but thank goodness it didn’t collapse while I was riding. I spent more time in the pool this afternoon swiping up debris and cooling off.

Our healthy and somewhat frugal dinner, son’s last supper request, was mussels marinara. This is such a simple but tasty dish–a quick sauce of garlic, white wine, tomatoes, and fresh herbs cooks the mussels in minutes. Served it over whole wheat pasta with sides of garlic bread and a quick green salad.

Wow, @PlantMom. I think I could close my eyes and listen to you narrate the sights of your day all day long. That was a real treat.

That sounds like a wonderful afternoon, PlantMom - we need you to do a podcast for us! I love mussels. Our dinner tonight was the first Chef’d experiment - tandoori shrimp. Marinade of yogurt, cumin, garlic, ginger, turmeric and coriander for the shrimp; sauteed and then served over a salad of cucumber, tomato, cilantro, red onion, lime zest and juice and drizzled with a dressing of yogurt and fresh mint. It was tasty and I will definitely make it again using my own ingredients (all things I had on hand!) Already one snafu - I was going to make grilled ribs today. To make things “easier” they send you meat that is precooked and you just finish it on the grill. One problem - one rack was precooked, the other is definitely raw. I’ll have to precook it to use it. So much for convenience!

After all the diet discussion, I have been taking another look at Racing Weight. I ordered a few things from REI - the Patagonia Houdini jacket, some of the MOWC oatmeal, socks and a shirt for Mr. Sabaray. Not sure how Coach thinks I am doing with the training - pretty light week planned. I need to get back to my regular routes - the ones I’m doing now are killing me! I am cheating tomorrow and doing a group run that is in excess of what she’s suggested.

BB–sending healing mojo. Hope you’re back running very soon.

Two short walks this weekend (3 miles on Friday and today–skipped Saturday because it was 97 degrees, which never happens in central MA). Spent the rest of the time planting–we have big containers on our deck.
Planted 14 pepper plants (mostly hot varieties that I’ll pickle or use for sauce) and 13 tomato plants. Also planted basil in herb garden and hibiscus and dahlias in very large pots.

PlantMom, even with that minor flat tire glitch, that still sounds like a perfect outing. What Waiting2exhale said.

My day was much less exciting. Miraculously, I am able to hop around OK. I had to pick up a thing for kiddo ASAP at the mall and also decided to get some mule-type shoes to wear while my foot is healing. Because I cannot drive, Mr. volunteered to get me there. We even went out for sushi… My lunch was under 500 calories: a plate of tofu with chili sauce and a plate of Philly rolls, made me happy:

I rescheduled our dinner with friends for tonight. I am secretly hoping to get my step (hop?) count to 8,000. It is currently at 5,600.

Sounds like you had a wonderful day PlantMom not withstanding that pesky flat. At least you had your own SAG vehicle to come get you :).

As far as I could tell, I was the only person out of 30,000 in my town walking at 11:30 pm. Am I the strange one or is it the other 29,999?

Ah, how to respond. A simple yes? A more contemplative delving into the existential meaning of life and the quest for self-actualization? The latter makes my head hurt. I think I’ll stick with a simple yes! But no more so than so many of us on this thread.

Late night walks are the best! As long as there are no creepy lurkers!

Took the pup for a long walk this morning then went on my own comfortable 15 minute pace walk for another 3 miles - anticipating next a 2.5 hour drive home and then gardening at home!

I feel a bit like I’m in CC-land here in my D’s neighborhood - something I haven’t seen before - big banners in front of the home of every graduating high school senior saying “congrats Susie! Cornell bound!” “Congrats charlie! Fordham bound!” - wow, this is a new tradition for me - seemed a little awkward to me! Another “do you rate?” Measure. Anyone have this in their hometown??

@ohiopublic , Before answering your question, tell me again if you are seriously considering buying (or renting) an altitude training tent? I thought of you the other day when I saw a commercial for the “elevation training mask” see the website trainingmask dotcom. Supposedly provides similar benefits to the altitude tent for around $80, but you have to wear it (it looks really weird, like a gas mask) and train with it, vs sleeping in the altitude training tent.

Actually I have a mask! Never really used it seriously though. Some of the studies that I read say that it is not truly reflective of high altitude. But I am seriously contemplating the tent. In addition, I might consider training for a month in high altitude before next year’s nationals.

A work colleague has one of those masks. He looks like Hannibal Lecter. If I were out walking at 11:30 at night, while the other 29,999 people in town were sleeping, and I encountered him, I would be terrified!

Really good article on the efficacy (or lack thereof) of so called high altitude training masks:
