"I feel a bit like I’m in CC-land here in my D’s neighborhood - something I haven’t seen before - big banners in front of the home of every graduating high school senior saying “congrats Susie! Cornell bound!” “Congrats charlie! Fordham bound!” - wow, this is a new tradition for me - seemed a little awkward to me! Another “do you rate?” Measure. Anyone have this in their hometown?? "
Wow, that would be unusual around here - in my neck of the woods, it is a rare exception that someone does not have a large purple flag or sign with a big W proudly displayed year round!
It is a gorgeous day, just perfect for a run/walk/weeding, so I will try to do something outdoors, but it will not be a run - I know my limits.
Made to 8,300 steps yesterday.
Two hour holiday yoga this AM.
We have training group tonight and I’m excited because we are meeting where the 5K will be (less than 2 weeks) and run/walking the actual race course. This will be my very first race so I like the idea of becoming familiar with the course before the event.
Good luck with the race. May try to run an actual 5K some day. Until then, I will just stick to the treadmill.
Nice and easy 5 mile run this morning - felt great. I feel like I’m finally getting into a rhythm. Finally decided to bite the bullet and signed up for a four week foundational yoga class that starts next week. I might like yoga more if I knew what I was doing! I figured if FallGirl was turning into a runner I might as well try to be a yogi.
Way too go, sabaray. I was thinking about giving yoga another shot, but first I need to stop stepping on (glass, rakes, snakes, etc.).
This isn’t going to become a YOGA thread is it?!!!
Completing a 5k running is a “bucket list” item for many I believe - and it is - if you have never run before - a real kick to say “I DID IT!!!” It was for me!
Running a 5K has actually been a bucket list item for me for quite some time.
Sabaray - I hope you find that you enjoy yoga. I admit that I was not too sure about it the first few times I went. And for me progress has been steady, but slow. I have learned to be very patient with my body, which has helped with running because that is another area in which I have had to be patient.
Yay, sabaray!
I have never seen college choice signs! We have the high school graduation yard signs, here, though.
5 miles this morning. - hot and humid. Want to finish out May with high mileage month for the year, so need another mile or so today and about 5 tomorrow. Then I taper for the race.
Wrapped my foot in a plastic bag and did some major weeding. It is finally nice and sunny and feels like summer! Now I want to retreat to my front porch with a glass of something nice, but I still have more yard work to do!
@BunsenBurner: Can I say, with just the slightest sarcasm, thank you for that sushi nutritional breakdown menu?
BB, your determination to get stuff done and make your step count with injuries is really impressive. Or compulsive. Maybe we’re all just nuts.
I have a friend who used to exercise a lot, and then in the past few year she’s started to have problems. First heart problems, now foot problems. The foot stuff actually slowed her down more – she’s really had to curtail her exercise. She can go about 2 miles and then the pain starts, so she stops. I’m not sure what I would do in that situation – whether I’d give into the pain, insist on finding a solution, or just walk through the pain.
I’ve never seen banners announcing where kids are going to college. This is not a good trend, I think.
I ran a really, really slow 7 miles today, in hot sticky soupy conditions. Tomorrow is yoga, first time in three weeks. I can’t say that I like yoga – but I really appreciate its benefits. My studio starts its outside sessions next week; I’m looking forward to those – it’s a beautiful setting.
^^^Outside is kind of cool - as long as no bugs!!!
BB, I tag teamed you on the gardening - we have had NO rain and the ground is rock hard - hard to even get the weeds out. Finally have MOST of my flower pots/window boxes planted - and half of one perennial garden. After 3 hours I realized I still need 3 full days to be caught up - which I don’t have available anytime soon!
Incidentally, this neighborhood I mentioned with the “where our kid is going to college!” sign ALSO puts signs in front of the homes where kids who are athletes live - and the families leave them up all year - not just a few weeks like the grad signs MOWC mentioned (we have those too). So walking down the street I can tell you the name of the teen who lives at that house, which school they go to and what their sport is…“Susie, School High, Competitive Dancing”. “Andy, School High, Tennis” - with little icons of a tennis racket, etc. It’s so obnoxious to me!!! It’s an upscale area - full of families - and apparently lots of “bragging”!
So exciting, Fallgirl! And abasket is right, saillakeerie. There’s definitely a sense of accomplishment that far outweighs some of the dread of the race event.
I can’t wait to hear about your yoga training, sabaray. I’d like to find a similar offering locally.
Thanks for the appreciative comments about the nature report. Each time I get out to walk on the trail I need remember that hiking is the activity I’d like to do years from now, and the other fitness activities are in support of a general health that’ll allow that hiking and walking.
I had a happy end to the flat tire story. We took the tire up to the bike store today for repair, and came home with the mended item AND a new bike for me! I’ve put many miles on my comfort bike–a very heavy Specialized cruiser–but have known that I’m ready for a bike I can ride in a more forward position. The new bike is a hybrid Felt, a bike I can ride on rougher surfaces (sidewalks, pavers, etc.), with a much lighter frame and larger wheels, better gearing, etc. than the old bike. The “comfort” I’ve sacrificed in losing the upright cruiser bike (with large seat, basket, and bell
) is compensated for by the increased speed with way less effort. But it is a comfortable bike–some nice handlebars to lean on. And yikes, I can actually keep up with my husband now! I still have the old bike but am looking forward to riding the new machine.
Today felt like a fitness extravaganza. I was up early to send off my son for the summer, I ran 8 slow, difficult miles, walked 4 more miles with DH, and rode test bikes and the new bike. I completed my triathlon of sorts by flopping into the pool late in the afternoon. I was craving an easy dinner tonight along with the carbs so it was a breakfast evening with blueberry, banana, walnut whole wheat buttermilk pancakes and a fried egg. I got everything except the kitchen sink in those things. Added fresh cold Florida watermelon on the side.
What a wonderful day Plantmom! And a shiny new bike! How awesome! Kudos to you for getting through 8 miles even when they were difficult.
Sounds like a perfect day, Plantmom! Enjoy the new bike! Are you naming it?
I think I’ve only seen football signs in yards and not other sports. My one concern was one of our smaller magnet schools put first and last names on the graduation signs. There was one on my street. I do talks on privacy and security, and my first thought was- Now you have the kid’s name and address and a really good guess at his birth year. Heading for identity theft!
18000 steps including my 6 running miles. We were worn out and made Bisquick strawberry shortcake for our entire dinner. Serious lack of protein, but it was good!
Enjoy the new bike Plantmom! Felts are very nice bikes. With the higher performance factor, without sacrificing comfort, you will have all sorts of new biking vistas open up for you.
Should have had some bacon with those strawberry shortcakes - or just a big glass of protein filled milk!!
MOWC I said the same thing - ok, you have the student’s first name, address, school and future college - why not just add in DOB and SSN!!!
“BB, your determination to get stuff done and make your step count with injuries is really impressive. Or compulsive. Maybe we’re all just nuts.”
Fireandrain - yes to all?
I know my limits, so when I really do not feel well, I definitely dial back, but minor stuff that gets in the way of my normal roll drives me batty. The foot is actually healing, or I would not be digging in the dirt.
So sorry to hear that your friend is having to deal with health issues. When it comes to picking among the three options, I usually try to find a solution that eliminates the root cause of the issue. If that is not possible, then I would modify my routine to and/or find another way to keep myself busy and productive.
Fingers crossed FallGirl has a fun course scouting run-walk!
PlantMom, enjoy your new bike!
MOfWC, sometimes, strawberry shortcake is what’s for dinner. B-) I am grilling steaks because my body demands meat. It is half an hour until the kitties’ dinner, and the kitties are going bonkers! I’m afraid my grilling activities will leave me with claw scratchmarks on my legs!
Hmmm. I think I will call it “the new bike”. Do bikes get names?
In our neighborhood we see only signs announcing a graduate of school X. I’m glad that trend for college attendance selection hasn’t spread although I think we’d see an abundance of “F” university banners if it did.
PlantMom, you should name your bike Bikey McBikeface.
