Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

All bikes should have names. They have personalities, so they should have names. My race bike is named Giselle. Sleek, lean, graceful speed in motion.

I learned on another thread that there is a magic elixir for fasting days called bone broth! I wonder if it would also cure my osteoporosis?

Sorry, no such luck MOWC :frowning:

It sounds disgusting.

Have lost 27 lbs. since February 9th on the old Weight Watchers Points Plus program. Absolutely hated the new Smart Points … Felt like I was starving! Now that I’m down to goal weight, don’t know what to do about the cellulite on my upper legs. Any ideas? I do the elliptical on a regular basis, but it doesn’t do much to firm up my legs.

Lol, lol BB-- Bikey McBikeface!

Bone broth is suspiciously similar to what I call stock.

Sore legs today from yesterday’s steps, sore bum from the bike seats. Clearly I need to move, ASAP.

Congrats on the weight loss, yellowgranite. I’d suggest adding some other body weight bearing exercises to your routine–squats, lunges, etc.

Great job @yellowgranite56 !

Yeah, usually good to pair that cardio with some strength training or other forms of exercise. You can probably tone your legs but cellulite can be hard to get rid of entirely I believe!

Congrats on the weight loss, yellowgranite - I like hearing that you were also exercising while dieting. We talked a while back about “spot reducing” and sadly it’s not possible - I have the same problem with my legs. PlantMom gave you some great suggestions for bodyweight exercises - some of the things I have added to my workouts are classes like Barre and TRX - and happily I’ve lost some inches from my thighs.

“Easy” 30 minute recovery run this morning followed by a session with my Pilates trainer. My right calf has been bothering me and it is noticeably more developed than the left. Clearly I’ve been working that leg harder! My left leg is just the littlest big longer than the right. Today was tough.

This whole bone broth thing is just a silly repackaging of grandma’s traditional soup stock made with the meat on the bones. Nothing mystical about it. The articles I linked in my post discuss some of the actual science behind the supposed benefits. Some of it is legit, much of it is hype. But if you put a new label on it and have TV docs toute it for ratings, suddenly it’s a miraculous nutritional break through.

Welcome yellowgranite56 and congrats on your successes! I have a lot of ambivalence about the current incarnation of Weight Watchers too. I find that the new user interface is very cumbersome and not nearly as intuitive as older versions. I find that the USDA’s Supertracker site and MyFitnessPal are much sleeker and more elegant, user friendly online trackers. With regard to the cellulite, unfortunately there is no magic bullet to eliminate it. Cellulite is fat cells. You can reduce the size of the fat cells and thereby the visibility of the cellulite through proper nutrition, exercise and hydration but that won’t eliminate the number of them. Here’re some links to some pretty good articles on it.

@yellowgranite56, welcome! Big congrats on your weight loss. Michael’s links have good info; cellulite is really hard to deal with. It also could be that in addition to cellulite, you have some loose skin due to rapid weight loss, and that adds to the wrinkly appearance. Those stretch marks that exacerbate the cellulite appearance could either bounce back with time or linger depending on your skin’s elasticity/amount of collagen. Here is a link that describes some specific exercises for firming the muscle in the thighs and legs that could help reduce the appearance of whrinkled skin:

Also, your dermatologist might be able to suggest some cosmetic approaches to reducing the appearance of cellulite.

It really takes time for the body to change, so be patient… Easier said than done… but it sounds like you can stick with a plan. Keep up the good work, and again, congrats on losing 27 pounds.

Bone broth sounds like my grandpa’s signature borscht. Meaty bones boiled to perfection to make stock, then heaps of cabbage, beets, carrots, green peas, onions, and tomatoes… Maybe that’s why I was rail-thin in my youth! B-)

I had a fabulous long weekend and now back to over 100 posts to catch up on! We had perfect weather for the three day weekend and I took full advantage of it. Saturday morning was a hot and steamy 11 mile run. Then I spent Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday spreading 12 yards of mulch. Wow, that was a lot of mulch! And that seems to use muscles in my back that I never knew I had! Yesterday was less intense, but fun planting flowers and general yardwork. I spent some time floating in the pool in the afternoon and that was just perfect. (Note, I have to admit to just floating, no active swimming for any exercise!)

This will be a good running week. Tonight is a group run with running club. Tomorrow is two runs to celebrate National Running Day. Early morning with Back on My Feet and then again in the evening with the local running club. Thursday is a one mile race downtown that is a lot of fun - it’s a kickoff event for a marathon in November. On Friday, we leave on vacation. We’re running the Grand Teton Half Marathon on Saturday and then spending a week hiking in the Tetons and visiting Yellowstone. We’ll finish up with running the Yellowstone Half Marathon the following Saturday. I’m really looking forward to the vacation but these races will be for the scenery, not hoping for any stellar times. It will be my first experience running at altitude (6400 ft) so I am not sure what to expect.

BB - sorry to hear about your foot injury, that sounds awful! I did like the visual of you doing the watermelon hop, though! I hope that you start feeling some relief in your hip from the injection soon.

C3B- running at altitude is very challenging, so be warned. It is very hard to catch your breath once you lose it. Any incline feels like a mountain. I find that I have to stop and walk to get my breath back. Your first race will be harder. You will be adjusted somewhat by the 2nd one. It will be beautiful and fun- just be prepared for much less oxygen! I run at elevation over 9000 feet every summer when we go to Crested Butte, and it is killer. I love it, though. It sounds like a great trip. P.S. Floating in the pool would be logged as strenuous exercise by some on CC.

@C3Baker, I did some training runs in Denver (ca. 5,600-6,000 ft). Make sure to hydrate well - throughout your entire trip - and take it easy for the first couple of miles to see how your body does at such altitudes. @MomofWildChild is correct that your body will feel more adjusted by your second race, so take your first race as a training run. Have fun! I am jealous in the good sense of the word.

^^Yeah, if you’re floating in the pool you still have to haul your behind on top of that floating mat/tube!!!

That sounds like a running lover’s perfect week C3B!

And thanks for the reminder of National Running Day tomorrow! I would have forgot!

National Running Day! Thanks for the reminder. For me, it will be a one mile slow hobble on my Precor. My foot is doing better, and I am able to gently step on the heel instead of just the tip of my toes.

About a week ago I woke up and realized that I just no longer cared about losing weight. It’s such hard work, and I’ve worked at it for four years, and right now, I don’t care. I keep forgetting to do my daily morning weigh-in, and I forget to track my food, and I’m eating because I’m hungry. I’m eating the same things I’ve eaten for the last four years, and I’m not gaining weight (at least so far), so I think I’m going to take a weight-loss-effort vacation until my triathlon (sprint) in late August, and just focus on enjoying all my workouts and maintaining my current weight. I feel really good, physically, and am mostly startled by this sudden change in mental status: I’m simply no longer obsessed.

I notice Runner’'s World is promoting a Memorial Day to July 4 run streak (at least a mile a day), so I’m thinking I’ll give that a try. I’m finding a quick morning two miles to be a real pleasure right now! (Sometimes I do more, but the dog and I are doing at least two, for the last week, and we’re both pretty happy with it. This morning he ignored a squirrel.)

dmd, it sounds like you achieved your “perfect racing weight.” And the fact that your dog enjoyed the run with you so much he ignored a squirrel says a lot. B-) Congrats on all fronts!!!

UPS Tracking says my Fitbit Alta should arrive today! Hope it sets up simply (guess I’ll just disconnect the Charge HR?) , smoothly and SYNCS!!!

oohh, exciting, abasket! Hope it will behave. On my Fitbit dashboard (via their website), under settings/devices there is an option “remove this device”. Maybe you will have to do that first on your app or via the website dashboard.

I still have not solved the time display mystery. Tried the recommended fixes to no avail. I will wait for the new firmware update, and if that does not solve the mystery, I will pursue the tech support.
