abasket- I would remove the other device. Mine were switching back and forth during setup and charging, and it was annoying. My steps were recording on both.
Will do - can’t wait to throw my current one in a box and say “good riddance!”
You don’t have to remove the other device. I have both my Surge and Blaze on my Fitbit app. I wear the Blaze all day, but when I run I change to the Surge because it has GPS and I think it is more accurate than the Blaze using the phone’s GPS (or at least the Surge GPS is closer to what Garmin shows than the Blaze does using my phone’s GPS and for whatever reason, I consider the Garmin to be the gold standard). The app will pick up either device and update accordingly. But I suppose if your Charge has been flaky anyway, maybe it is safer to remove it. And since you aren’t likely to go back and forth between the Charge and the Alta, there’s probably no reason to keep it on your account anyway. I just wanted to mention that it isn’t necessary.
Thanks for the info on running at higher elevation. I am totally considering these half marathons to be all about the scenery and not planning to push for any kind of time. It should be a lot of fun!
dmd77 - you are at a perfect place. You’ve reached your goal weight, you are maintaining, and you’re able to do it without being obsessed. I’m really impressed by your mental state. And I’m really impressed with your dog ignoring a squirrel.
I hear you- but I want to emphasize that it isn’t about pushing for a particular time. It’s about being able to breathe!
Thanks, all. No, I’m not actually at goal weight–maybe 7 or so pounds theoretically to go–but I don’t want to fight it right now, so I’m going to let my body settle in at this weight for a while.
Re: high altitude running. To add to what MOfWC said. Run at the same level of effort, not at the same speed.

I recalled our hike into the crater on Haleakala; the downhill hike was fine, but the hike out of it was tough. Some folks underestimated their level of fitness and were in real trouble, stopping every 200 yards or so. We were in pretty good shape and still had to slow down significantly.
C3Baker - sounds like a great trip. Both national parks are beautiful.
I just returned from high altitude – there’s no way I could have gone running at 10,000 feet. The lack of oxygen knocked me out entirely. You’re not as high as I was – but take it easy!
Welcome, yellowgranite, and congrats on your weight loss!
Sorry to hear about your foot, @BunsenBurner – but glad it’s healing.
Woot, woot on the new bike, @PlantMom! I like Bikey McBikeface! (We all are voting on the name for YOUR bike, right?)
Welcome, @yellowgranite56 – and kudos on the weight loss.
I’m a couple days late reporting in. Friday I ran 3.8+ miles. I’d been doing about 5 every other day, but have decided to back off a little bit to see if that helps the “hitch in my gait.” I’ve been having issues for a while now. It didn’t seem to bother much tramping all over South Korea & Japan, but more recently it’s back. I’m thinking it may be tight muscles and am actually considering trying either yoga or pilates … (Really, I’m not trying to turn this into a yoga thread!)
We did a big triangle drive on Saturday/Sunday for graduation parties, birthday brunches, carillon dedications, etc. – RI to Fairfield County, CT (where we stayed overnight); then to my hometown in western MA on Sunday morning; then back to RI. Yesterday it rained most of the day – my exercise consisted of housecleaning.
Today I walked 18 holes of golf and had a decent round. I’ve been in the money for 2 weeks in a row! Just finished a couple hours of weeding – my back and knees were complaining! I dislike actually doing both cleaning and weeding, but like the results. H, of course, can’t help with the weeding because he’s still working on the (wooden) sailboat to get it ready to go in the water. (Grrrrr!)
I’m amused by the naming of bikes. I know lots of people who name their cars and their bikes… A friend of mine, years ago, named his car “Cognito” so he could drive around “in Cognito.” (Seriously.) The closest I ever came to a named car was one my friends (?) named “the rolling wreck.” I’m very fond of my bike, but it doesn’t have a name, other than “my bike.”
Bikey McBikeface is growing on me. The name definitely makes me smile

Sounds like a tough workout weekend, C3B. That’s a lot of mulch!
Nice golfing, CBB. Do you sail with your husband? The wooden boat must be a beauty.
My replacement Fitbit Charge HR arrived in today’s mail. No fancy box, no new charger, no instructions for the swap. Sigh. The new one’s on the charger. I think it’s activated, but the app crashed while taking off the old one. I’m not going to think about them until tomorrow.
My lower legs/upper feet are feeling a tad sore today too–right on the top of the foot where it meets the leg. Maybe this is from all the bike trial riding I did yesterday? I walked 5 miles today and took the bike out for a short (30 minute) ride. No time or inclination for much other outside activity on this hot day, except a quick dip in the pool tonight before the rain set in.
PlantMom, it is very likely that the trail riding worked your leg muscles in a slightly different way. Enjoy some well-deserved rest!
Tested the waters gently today by walking a mile/3 mph pace on the Precor - in my favorite Oofos flip flops.
I think it was “trial” riding, right?
So- how did the mile feel?
I got my highest mileage month this year- 166.7.
18 mile bike ride and later tonight a 4 mile trail walk. Good day, had ice cream for dessert. Got to love the summer, don’t ya!
Hello to all ! I am still following along and trying to get motivated again! Trying to get back to longer walks outside but I am having some difficulty with pain in my right calf. I took time off and it hasn’t improved. It is a pain that occurs only when I try to walk at a speed that is little over a comfortable stroll. More like a burning pain than sharp and stabbing. I really need to workout more due to some bad lab tests but I can barely make it around the block! Any ideas? I’ve tried stretching, new shoes and massage.
I don’t know what that could be, NM? It sounds painful, though. Does elliptical bother it?
[Calf burning sensation](Healthgrades Health Library)
Some of the stuff on that list is pretty unlikely (leprosy?) but some of them are pretty serious.
Honestly, I think this is doctor territory and not “ask my buds on the internet” territory.
NM - at risk of being an Internet doctor, when you mentioned “burning” I thought of compartment syndrome. A girl on my daughter’s CC team had it- and burning pain was one of the symptoms. They had to open the muscle fascia to relieve the pressure. Something that a good sports med Doctor could investigate? Family practitioner probably wouldn’t know about it.
After my midnight walk, I’ve felt like I’ve had “young legs” the past couple days. 2:35 800 meter at the track last night and a fast 4 miles tonight without the “effort” that’s usually needed (at 59!)
Good job, Ohio! And good suggestion about compartment syndrome, although isn’t it usually in the front of the leg?
The girl on our team had it in the calf as I recall? I just remember that the fascia incision relieved the muscle pressure. Seemed to help and not running with pain anymore.
Welcome back NM - I agree, good idea to talk to a doc about this one - just so you don’t waste any more time off your feet!
Plantmom, we can break in our new Fitbits together. My Alta came in the mail and I just charged it up. Tomorrow I’ll give it an official whirl. LIke that it’s thinner. The “tapping” is a little annoying but I figure my taps will get more sufficient. Anxious to see how the movement reminders work tomorrow while I’m at work.
