Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Thanks, abasket. I do know my limits and play it safe when it is gonna hurt. I am learning from MOfWC!

BB you are really resourceful!

LOL, I was worried about getting my bandages disturbed by socks/shoes, but then I remembered the Tarahumara way… Jokes aside, I now see how people can run in “sandals.” If one runs slow and carefully enough, it can be done safely. Oofos are very cushioned and stay put on the feet, so all I needed were the straps to secure them even further. I would not run this way on unpaved trails, because I guarantee that I would trip and bloody my toes!

I wasn’t able to participate with Back on My Feet this morning for their National Running Day event because of a work issue that came up late yesterday. Instead I had to host a global meeting/teleconference early this morning. I was pretty bummed about missing it, and then I come on here and read about everyone getting their run in this morning and I’m even more bummed! This whole job thing is for the birds - I’m ready to retire! Work keeps getting in the way of the fun stuff! Haha, retirement won’t happen for a few more years and I really can’t complain about my job. Fortunately there’s another event tonight with our local running club so I will get some mileage in to celebrate the day. If we don’t get rained out - thunderstorms are predicted but it’s anybody’s guess if/when they will happen. This time of year the weather can be so unpredictable.

Bunsen - I have been eyeing the Oofos flip flops at our local running store. They look really comfortable! I’m glad you were able to get a mile in this morning and that you were careful doing it.

MOWC - impressive mileage for May! I think dialing it back for June is a good idea!

I eat my breakfast–a fruit/yogurt/protein powder/chia seed smoothie–as soon as I get up (I get up quite early). I then run about two and a half hours later, once the smoothie has left my stomach. I used to be able to run about an hour after my smoothie, but the addition of the chia seed has increased the bulk and delayed the ability to run. This is okay, since I don’t run until after DH has left for work. (The chia seed also delays hunger until lunchtime.) If I need to run earlier (on the mornings I meet a friend to swim early, for example), I run without eating anything–I actually really enjoy that feeling of leanness and serious hunger that results from running empty.

Bunsen- how was the hip? C3B- I would really recommend Oofos. I have the slides and the flip flops. And the clogs for winter…

Hard to say I feel any significant improvement in the hip… But that’s the same leg that stepped on the glass! Two more days…

I wear Oofos flipflops as my house slippers. I got them at the expo before the last race and because I heard MOfWC saying how great they were. They really are comfy. I cannot wear any other flipflop, but these stay put on my feet and feel like walking on clouds. I think I need to get a blue pair for better wardrobe coordination.

Nice May mileage, MoWC and great exercising so far today, especially all the runners/joggers/walkers! BB you are truly amazing and inventive

Hi, NMinn. Glad to see you back and hope you get to a doc for the leg burning. That sounds so painful :frowning:

I got in my own running miles–6.5–early this morning after rising to see off DH. I’ve been following a guideline for myself about eating and morning running of going on an empty stomach for 3 miles or less, but needing to eat a little if I’m planning a longer run. Today I had a coffee yogurt (with fat) and a few sips of green tea before the run. When I came back, I had a leftover ww pancake spread with almond butter and a tiny bit of maple syrup, the rest of the tea, half of a banana, and then coffee.

I found out this weekend that our local Sports Authority is going out of business and liquidating its merchandise. The store is not all that old and the employees were told rather abruptly about the store closing. I feel so bad for them. The retail area is home to a number of big box stores including anchors of Lowes, a Super Target, BB and B, along with lower to mid-range retail. Not too, too long ago, the enormous B and N book store was shuttered in favor of Forever XXI. I don’t know what will replace the Sports Authority, but it makes me worry for us, the locals, to have lost critically important storefront for books and fitness for the sake of?? (more cheap clothing for youngsters?). After my run I took a trip up to the soon-to-be shuttered store and left after buying discounted items including 2 pairs of shoes (Brooks Ghost 8, Nike walkers), 2 pairs of Teva sandals, 2 pairs of flipflops (Teva and Nike), padded biking shorts, a Columbia sunscreen shirt, a set of Nike running shorts and a top.

I saw this in today’s NYT. Benefits of yoga on brain health:

Yoga class this morning (vinyasa flow) and then walked home (2 miles). Spent the rest of the day moving stuff back into the guest house at our vacation place. We had the inside of the house painted; H and I emptied everything into a storage pod. Got my steps in easily–I am finished for the day. Should get it all back in tomorrow. It is amazing what a difference a new paint job makes.

I have a Fitbit Charge HR–have not had problems.
Abaset–hope you have better luck with your replacement. It is easy to transfer over to a new model

PlantMom, sorry to hear about the store closing. Hope the folks working there will be able to find work quickly. Sigh. Forever 21 is one of the stores where even my teens would not shop… Only for tees and maybe an occasional summer dress.

Speaking of shoes, I just received my online loot - a pair of really cool Eileen Fisher sandals! If I had gotten them before my “run,” I would have tried to jog in them. Comfy!! Bloomies had them on sale for almost 50% off!

They are going to see Europe this summer.

I love those sandals, Bunsen. They look really comfortable.

The whole Sports Authority chain is in bankruptcy. Those kinds of retail chains are really hurting right now due to online sales.

Those are pretty sandals, Bunsen. Here are the sporty Tevas I got today. They’re really comfortable, especially with my high arches, but I like the brand and its durability–I have a few pairs of old Tevas I still wear regularly.

Yeah, online retail is tough to beat–I’m part of the problem. It just was easy to be able to run up to big ol’ box, SA, with its broad sporting good assortment to pick up or try on something quickly.

Hi all! Missed you!

What is this - MOWC wants me on roller skates? Are you trying to KILL me, MOWC? Lol. (No, it’s true - am going to give this a whirl,)

Have been great w the exercising - not as disciplined on food, unfortunately. I am doing my day of fitness w my (30 yo) girlfriend on Sunday and we are going to try SoulCycle and also one of the BBG/Kayla Itsines workouts (has anyone seen those? She’s an Australian girl who has built a fitness empire)

I know! Many times, I had to do emergency goggles shopping for kiddo - there usually were no vendors at her late-evening summer league meets. Those gradient blue Tevas are gorgeous!!!

The UPS guy probably hates driving up my narrow street… but I keep him in business.

I didn’t think about the ripple effects, either. Here, a brief CNN video clip about two large name brand creditors feeling the impact of SA bankruptcy and store closing, Nike and Under Armour.

I like those Tevas, too.

Pizzagirl is BAAAACK!!! Yay. <:-P <:-P

I am all ears about your fitness adventures, especially the rollerskating.

My push/pull sled finally arrived, yay! First it was supposed to come last Friday. Then it got pushed back to yesterday. Yesterday it was out on the truck for delivery but never arrived. Today it was supposed to be delivered at 11:30 but wasn’t until 1:45. I couldn’t understand the delays until I saw the packaging. UPS needed all that extra time to dump it off trucks several dozen times. Fortunately, it’s 68 lbs of steel plates, runners and tubing that you could drive a truck over and not damage. Assembly will have to await my return from the WSSC conference that I’m leaving for tomorrow. 4 days in Miami with my daughter and 3 other instructors from her studio attending fitness seminars and workshops of every variety. Gonna be a blast!

Glad you got the sled! Enjoy Miami. Sounds very hot, though!
