Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I would mourn the loss of Barnes and Noble - maybe even more than the Sports Authority! But you seemed to benefit with a nice haul of stuff today!

Welcome back PG! - can’t wait to hear about the roller skating!

My just turned 19 year old D was excited to buy her first pair of Tevas at Nordstrom Rack - I knew I loved that girl! She is a shoe hound but really needed something for when we take long walks etc.

Welp, we (mr r and I) finally finally got a pass to the rec center at the city over from us (our city doesn’t have one :frowning: ). Mr R and I went swimming for about a half hour today- which was as much as I physically could. I’m still not ready for land exercises yet but baby steps.

I felt horrible after seeing pictures of me from Mr R’s brother’s wedding this past weekend. I looked horrible- I didn’t even recognize myself. So I’m making Mr R force me to go swimming every day.

Luckily, the pool was beautiful and there were places I could walk (in the water), places I could swim, and there are even water weights and other things. It’s also very disability-friendly so I’ll be able to go by myself even if it’s a day where I’m wheelchair bound (I still can’t push myself well enough to go places by myself in the chair).

Sounds like things are going in the right direction, Romani! Hope you’re able to enjoy swimming soon.

I spent most of the day at work sitting under an air conditioning vent that would not turn off. Our building has chronic problems with heating/cooling and I seem to be getting the entire second floor’s share of a/c. Was glad to leave and get to Pilates. Nice class with only three of us and for once, I was the one who knew what I was doing and didn’t need a lot of help or guidance! Yay! Came home and walked the pups - am trying now to restrain myself from ordering a whole lot of clothes after reading about all the purchases. Tomorrow will be a light running day.

The rollerskating doesn’t start till July. But I gotta say - it was expensive to register for - as it was not only the class fee, but skates (it was cheaper to buy than to rent-to-buy) and all the mouth guard / elbow guard / knee guard stuff!

Good report, Romani. sabaray- I can not STAND heavy air-conditioning. I would have to work outside. We have some really cold areas in our offices, but my office tends to be on the warm side, which is fine with me.

Sounds like some good news, Romani. I wonder if there are aquajogging classes you can sign up for when you get some strength back. Glad you have a good support team (Mr. R)!

I hate blasting AC, too. The first thing I do when we arrive to HI and walk into our hotel room is turn off the AC, open windows and turn on the ceiling fan.

Made a dash to the mall and… found a shoe sale! Leopard flats and bright red wedge heels in 1/2 size bigger than what the store had are on their way to my house. Made sure that they are runnable; as usual, the sales guy looked very amused. With the mile run, got my 10,000 steps already. Heel is healing.

PG, the NYTimes did a story on Kayla Itsines – www.nytimes.com/2016/03/17/fashion/kayla-itsines-instagram-fitness-star.html?_r=0. I’d never heard of her before that. I checked out her website and her Instagram feed.

Thanks, Fireandrain! I like her attitude, “I do not have a sob story.” Also, liked that:

Nice article, @fireandrain - thanks for posting! Here’s my favorite part:

Really short 2.3 miles this morning - the humidity is killing me! I’ve been paying a lot more attention to my HR though. I am soooo sloooooow.

It’s true that it’s rare to see a “pounds lost” figure among her followers, but some of them get VERY tiny. All the same, it appears to be a well thought out program - has both heavy and light cardio, has a lot of what I’ll call “classic” moves (lunges, squats, etc.), doesn’t shy away from weights.

sabaray- I ran 2.2 this morning. The humidity is killing me and if it is this humid Sat morning for my race, I’m in big trouble. Slow is fine. Don’t worry. It’s not who wins the workout!

Sabaray - I’m sure you are faster than me

sabaray…think of how far you have come since you started this thread! You are crushing it!

This thread is so inspirational!

I would like to get back to lifting weights regularly, 3x a week. I fell off the wagon about two years ago, and it’s been so very hard to get back to it.

UK–if you are having trouble starting weight workouts again, get a personal trainer. I found that paying someone made a difference for me–I would show up. It was the best money I ever spent. I didnt have the self-discipline to do it on my own. Find a trainer with whom you feel comfortable. I had a couple of trainers before I found the one! I still work with the same trainer–have cut back to 1x a week. Do the other workouts on my own.

Thanks for that good reminder, NM - and FallGirl, I wouldn’t be so sure! I know this is helping me with some good training habits.

@Midwest67, set little goals. “I will lift weights twice this week” - and then schedule when you’re going to do it. See if you can do that four weeks in a row before you try to increase it to three. In my limited experience, it has taken me four weeks to build a habit. My established habits are running five times a week (which I have to do because I have a commitment and a coach) and my Pilates practice (supported by trainer and studio to keep me accountable). Now I’m going to try and add yoga once a week (I have four weeks scheduled). Will yoga become a new habit? I don’t know, because my Pilates studio has added new classes that I am going to work into my schedule too. Checking in here with like minded individuals has really helped me stay consistent with exercise.

@Bromfield2 had a great suggestion with the trainer! That’s what has really helped me build my Pilates practice. The trainer has given me confidence to go ahead and try other classes that I never would have done on my own.

Midwest67, I found that the same strategy as the Instagram’s star dad used (e.g., 10 pushups before you can do XYZ) works for me. I have a set of free weights (15 lb dumbbells) that I work with 10-15 min 3-4 times a week. I do not have a preset time, but my weights are bright green and are kept in the living room in plain view, so it is not easy to “forget” about them. I also agree with the posters above who said a trainer could be a good way to start. Good luck!

Interesting study - it is still ongoing - that may shed some light on what behaviors result in “healthy”:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2016/05/26/is-10000-steps-goal-more-myth-than-science-study-seeks-fitness-truths-through-our-phones-and-more/

As usual, the headline is misleading. It is definitely not based on scientific rationale, but no one knows if it is a “myth.”

Getting 10,000 steps a day is better than getting 1,500, which is what I did when I was still “chained” to a corporate job and walking primarily from home to car to office and back. It doesn’t really matter to me if it’s a magic number or not.

And this,

.

Indeed!
