Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I think Mr. Sabaray and Mr. Bunsen need to become new Oiselle customers!

Sabaray, I hear you about the trigger foods. It’s like the old Pringles jingle – once you start, you can’t stop! (not that I like Pringles, yuk)

Am trying to climb back on the wagon. You’d think that after four years of good, slow weight loss, it wouldn’t pile back on so quickly. Not good!

@CountingDown, I’m in the same boat you are. I have piled on an incredible amount of weight the past year. So I joined Weight Watchers for the accountability and am starting over. I really think that our empty nest in the fall is going to help GREATLY. Our two kids are gone for a week or two now, then they’ll be home until they leave for school mid to late August. My husband and I work at home, and we are finding life SO much easier with them out of the house! Things stay picked up, and there’s no daily drama to deal with. Plus all the food they leave out is not around to tempt us. I am feeling encouraged.

I’ve gotten very lazy about food - while I exercise a lot, I don’t exercise enough to justify everything I’ve been eating lately. I am supposed to have my thyroid tested but misplaced the lab requisition, so need to call and get that ordered again. I eat when I’m bored, lonely or stressed - and I’ve been all three of those quite a bit over the course of the last year! Occasionally I even eat when I’m just hungry.

ML, that is so true about empty nest. Our little niece is staying with us this summer, and I my maternal instincts kicked it. I no longer can make just a salad for dinner and serve it after our exercise, which would push our dinner times to a pretty late hour. The poor kid is starving after being in classes all day long! I feel like I need to provide a variety of tasty snacks and dinner foods and feed everyone when we get home. So we eat, and then we are too full to exercise.

^^Isn’t it ok to eat when you are hungry??!"

So share your weak moments. What is “lazy about food” for you? (directed at everyone, not just Sabaray  ). Do you have a worst meal? Worst time of day? Worst trigger item? Too much take out? - how often is that? Too much snacking? Poor snacks?

I think when you can aloud say where your issues are, you can be better make and be motivated to make solutions - small solutions - to better habits. Cause that’s mostly it, right - habits???

My weak moment/area of improvement is the nightly snack. I AM going to have a nightly snack. I don’t generally overeat at dinner, but enjoy and want that nightly snack - I also don’t eat breakfast until about 2 hours after I wake in the morning so the nightly snack MAYBE helps tide me over? So, I have to watch the SIZE of the nightly snack - keep it “snack size”, not meal size.

My laziness is with meal planning. I used to plan exactly what was going to be eaten at every meal, purchase only those items and dedicate time to prepping for the week ahead. Precook grain, portion out proteins, chop vegetables so healthy meals were quick and easy to prepare. Now it seems I am running to the store after work to pick up something for dinner. Honestly I am just resentful of having a demanding job and having to do all the meal planning, prep and household maintenance so have been slacking on the meal end of things.

@abasket, I am going to try that chicken in foil dish you posted on the other thread. It has everything I like.

My worst trigger item is crusty, freshly-baked bread with salty butter! I make sure to never buy freshly baked bread because I could eat a whole loaf. I can have a bowl of fancy chocolates on the kitchen counter and never dip my hand into it. I just tossed a couple of half-eaten gelato jars (Talenti?) because they were getting that nasty freezer burn. Not a sweet-toothed person by any standards, but bread and roasted potatoes (not chips, yuck) are my downfall items. Ditto cheese with wine. So I made a habit to never open a bottle on Sunday evening. That way, we don’t have an excuse to have leftover wine on Monday evening. And I serve veggies and fruit with our wine instead of cheese and crackers.

Who has leftover wine?

Lol, sabaray!

Here is my “wine math.” A bottle amounts to 3 large glasses (or 4 small ones). If the two of us each have a glass, we end up with a leftover glass (the alternative is no leftovers and a major headache, lol). Can’t have just a half a glass, need to open another bottle, and so on. So we open a bottle on Friday, each have a glass, open another on Saturday, again, each have a glass, then we have 2 glasses left to have on Sunday. Boom.

And niece is 21, so now we can’t have her left out of the wine equation, which means my wine math is all screwed up!

Yeah, I thought that foil packet recipe looked AWESOME. If you make let me know how it turns out - I’d make it tonight but it’s something I’ll have to save for when people other than my D2 and H are home - because neither would TOUCH it!

Meal planning is tough. Sometimes I feel like I just want a constant stream of “10 minute meals” - cause I don’t have the time or energy for more than that. H doesn’t cook at all. Not at all. I don’t even ask him to grill anymore (I do it) because he insists on overcooking anything he puts on the grill!

Lunch is my downfall. I get lazy and overeat. I do ok at breakfast and dinner but seem to eat a lot for lunch.

I admit that I am a 3 meal a day person. When I was at my sisters she was annoyed that I’d want to eat lunch. I usually have a Greek yogurt and fruit for breakfast so by 1 or so, I am hungry. I don’t snack much but sister would and then sometimes we wouldn’t eat until 7 or 8 at night. By then I am over hungry and over eat.

I tend to make the same meals for dinner over and over again. Meat, rice or potato, vegetables. My H is pretty picky and never complains. I’m the griller though, H never grills. Or cooks if I’m home.

I never mow the grass. I refuse to, I figure he needs one chore.

“So share your weak moments. What is “lazy about food” for you? (directed at everyone, not just Sabaray ). Do you have a worst meal? Worst time of day? Worst trigger item? Too much take out? - how often is that? Too much snacking? Poor snacks?”

My worst habit is that I will eat when I’m doing something else - playing on the computer or reading - and thus eat large quantities of food without realizing how much. I need to be more disciplined about sitting down at a table and being focused on the food itself.

My good habits are that I do eat breakfast, and I’m not tempted to eat when watching TV after dinner or late at night; I “shut down” right after dinner.

Sweets are my downfall. Maybe I should go on a sugar fast like I did a couple of years ago. It really did reduce my sugar craving.

Oh, and I also do really well on regimented plans like WW, but once I’ve lost the weight, I go back to my old patterns. So I know what I need to do differently, it’s just DOING IT!!

My weak moment is the period between four o clock and dinner. If we would reliably eat at seven, I would be okay. I get crazy hungry and eat everything sweet in the house if we go later (or if I think we might). I know I ought to schedule a substantial snack, like a pbj sandwich, and then I would be fine. I love chocolate and cookies. Chocolate ON cookies…you get the picture.

Good habits? I do eat three squares, protein and fresh fruits and veggies at each. We eat lots of fresh produce and fish.

A nascent bad habit now that I am an empty nester is that if I am alone for dinner I don’t always have a plan and so either don’t eat or eat crap. Breakfast and lunch I eat alone just fine, but dinner seems to catch me by surprise if i am alone.

This!!! When Mr. is out of town, I often end up eating crap for dinner. Like a slice of cheese melted on a piece of toast, some guacamole, a handful of almonds, and a glass of milk (or wine if it is Friday or weekend). Or I will eat a cup of ice cream and call it dinner. I am just not motivated to nourish my own body properly when no other humans are around to take care of (cats get their Tiki Cat chicken dinner rain or shine, 7 days a week).

I tried to remedy the situation by going to a Nordstrom cafe… I end up shopping and forgetting that the cafe closes at 8!

Love all the meal discussion! I just finished up our second week of Hello Fresh (similar to the box meals Sabaray has been posting about) and it has been great. So nice to have meals that somebody has already figured out for me! I think I’ll continue with it for a few months to build up a base of menu options. For the past 5 years I have been in a very predictable rut of dinners - makes for easy mindless cooking, but not much variety.

A very hot and humid 6.5 mile run last night. Tonight is a workout at the gym with my trainer. Tomorrow we head to Cleveland for a family reunion. I’m really looking forward to it, especially since our kids will all be there. I’m looking forward to congratulating D and her fiance on their engagement in person! There will be a lot of time in the car tomorrow and Sunday, but plenty of activity while we’re there, so I think I’ll be OK maintaining over the weekend.

I can completely relate to eating crap when on my own. I have definitely been known to have ice cream for dinner.

Workout for me today: 30 minutes on the Cybex arc–working on cardio.

I’m not usually star-struck, but have to report that when H and I went out to dinner last night we sat at a table next to Kevin Spacey. Didn’t recognize him until H whispered in my ear and said “do you know who is at the next table?”

I almost asked for an autograph, but figured since he was eating alone, he probably wanted to be left alone. He is one of my favorite actors.

H and I are leaving our vacation place for Ohio tomorrow–going to a family reunion with H’s sisters and their kids and grandkids. Will have to get up early so I can get in some walking.

BB–hope you won’t be grounded for too long and that the doc figures out your hip problem.

Is everyone coming to see me and @ohiopublic in Ohio!!!

Hot and steamy in Ohio these days - pack light!

So cool on the celeb siting Bromfield! I love hearing celebrity stories!

So I’m faced with what to make for dinner tonight…I’m thinking a veggie, shrimp, little-bit-o-pasta stirfry…

Taco salads at our house. Ground chicken breast, romaine, spinach, tomatoes, avocado, onion, little bit of cheese and salsa. I love those Frontera sauce packets - if they’re not good for me, I do not want to know!
