The toughest part of hydrating for me is not during physical activity but all the time in between. During a resistance training workout, 24 oz, no problem. On a bike ride, 48-96 oz, depending on length, no big deal. But sitting in an office all day, it’s just tough to keep focused on drinking. I keep a 24 oz water bottle at my desk now but even so, I constantly need to remind myself to drink. MOWC, have you tried Hammer Nutrition’s Endurolyte capsules? Sodium and potassium. I have found them to be a life saver on long hot bike rides.
I agree about the work day hydration, Michael.
I’m feeling horrible in 3 mile runs!
Ouch, deb. Hope you’re not too sore tomorrow. Safe travels, bromfield
I sympathize MoWC! This morning was just brutal here and accordingly, I had my worst workout in ages. I set out to do 4 miles of run walk, but bagged the run part after about a mile. HR was too high and I felt overheated quickly. H and I walked slowly tonight–ugh, still 95–but it felt better than this morning’s sauna.
Interesting chart, sabaray. Quinoa’s position at the top of the list inspired a dinner creation of a quinoa vegetable gratin pie with roasted eggplant, onions, garlic, tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, and a light amount of moz and parm cheese. Delicious!
I almost had a Fitbit crisis–thought the charging cord had been lost! I ordered another last night, but fortunately found the original today under the desk.
Just got back from walking the pups - 79 degrees and 83% humidity. They are each lying on top of an a/c vent.
I just cannot get excited about quinoa - probably because I haven’t been adding cheese to it! I like black rice with orange segments and a citrus vinaigrette - supposedly it is better for you than other varieties.
Sabaray, quinoa always tastes better with cheese!! Any cheese will do. I personally like feta.
And some butter. And fresh herbs. With quinoa, that is!
So darn hot here! I’m too wimpy to walk outside so did a Pilates and a yoga. It’s hot even if not deliberately.
I have a lot of feta - I want to make spanikopita but it’s just been too humid. Quinoa with feta it is! I’ll add some mint and I might even like it.
I’ve had mixed feelings about quinoa because the grain itself seems so variable. The plain white quinoa from the bulk bins at Whole Foods has had the best, most consistent flavor, imo. In my quinoa gratin pie, I added freshly grated parm to the cooked quinoa, pressed it into the bottom of a glass pie pan lightly coated with olive oil, and then layered on roasted eggplant, a mix of roasted peppers, onions, zucchini, and garlic, followed by a layer of sliced roma tomatoes and topped it with mozzarella and parm. I drizzled on a fresh chimichurri sauce, and sprinkled it with basil and red pepper flakes. The pie baked for about an hour, allowing the top to brown and all the vegetable juices and oil to drip down on the quinoa. Feta would be a great substitute for the moz and parm.
That sounds so great.
Yumm, PlantMom!
90+ degree heat, 3 cardio assessments scheduled for today and the air conditioning broke last night! Yikes!
Oh no! My spouse’s a/c at work was busted for 2 weeks. I had to go buy room fans and “airlift” them in. At least the patients are naked
Ugh, Michael! I hope they can get it fixed soon. I guess that will be your cardio assessment version of hot yoga!
5.6 miles. It went somewhat better, but my pace was still not slow enough to feel really comfortable. I think I have too much of a “get it done” mentality and don’t slow down enough. Not that I’m whipping along by any means! It was cloudy, humid and 72- felt a little better humidity-wise than the last few days.
Today was tough - and I hear you on the get it done mentality. The struggle is real to keep the HR down - we’re still at 94% humidity, but it was 64 when I started, warmed up to 72 by the end. Legs are tired. Sabapup likes to help “massage” my quads when I’m done running by jumping into my lap and standing on them! Not the best feeling!
Edited to ask @PlantMom what temperature she baked the quinoa gratin at?
Another hot day on the track. Brenda Martinez said “the track has no feelings” and it’s true! 1st in the 1500 meters, 1st in the 800 meters and a 2nd in the 400 meters. West Virginia Senior Classic. Now the toughest part—the 4 hour drive home.
That’s great ohiopublic! Congrats!
Congrats, Ohio!!!
Awesome job, Ohio! Congratulations!
Happened to be at Target today - for my fitness find of the day - the Slendertone. 20 minutes of wearing this belt that delivers jolts of electricity to your abdomen will give you abs of steel! I can’t believe people fall for this stuff.
Great job, Ohio!
@sabaray–I baked the gratin/pie at 350 for an hour. All the vegetables, except the tomatoes, had been roasted with olive oil and seasoning for about 30 minutes at 400.
H and I walked 4 before lunch. Super hot. We waited all morning for the sprinkler repair guys to finish up some work. At least that gave us an excuse to watch The Tour de France–exciting finish today!
