Nice, Ohio! I hope you don’t cramp up on the way home.
Sabaray- did you buy one?
$100? No way! That’s a month of unlimited mat, barre and TRX classes!
^^I love the way you think.
Congrats Ohio- you will crash when you get home!
The heat went away today - what a relief - looking forward to a run later this evening.
Did some upper body exercises. Visibly concerned Mr. asked me if I wanted to go into body building, but I told him that he has nothing to worry - I am not that enthused about eating green beans and boiled chicken breast every day.
Ohio, great job, congratulations. You have become a terror on the track :)!
MOWC, I love it, hot yoga cardio assessment, lol. As luck would have it, our HVAC guy arrived at 3:10 and had it fixed by 3:30 by replacing a blown electrical condenser unit. Just in time for my 3:30 client who I knew was going to be a sweaty mess.
BB, why no body building? Don’t you want to eat 5000 calories/day and work out 6 hours/day to gain weight and add all the muscle and then cut to lean out and eat zero carbs other than veggies?

This made me laugh way too hard, mainly because I go through bulk and cut cycles and know the struggle of macros.
Pokemon Go has been such a welcome blast from the past! Catching all the Pokemon in all the places. Already have plans in place to try and level up on a couple upcoming hikes and city adventures.
Yeah, Niquii77, it’s really no fun. Body builders are inherently are so very disciplined to extremes that most people don’t really understand. It may not be for everyone but you have to appreciate the focused sacrifices and dedication to achieving those goals.
On another note, my son competed in BBJ again today in a tap out only competition. I was kinda worried because since you can’t win on points, the focus is on bringing an opponent to the point of potential damage causing the opponent to tap out. And if you misjudge your limits, bad stuff gets torn to shreds. He took 1st place in his class, beating a pro MMA fighter. My son is scary - until you see him holding his daughter who turned 4 months old today, then he’s just a mush ball ;).
That Slendertone reminds me: A long time ago – the 1970s, before Jane Fonda – I joined a fitness center for the summer and went during lunch. I don’t remember it very well. They took my measurements and kept a chart to show how many inches I dropped. What I do recall best was the “machine” that wrapped a belt around your waist and then vibrated.
You were supposed to unhook the belt when you were done, but most people just stepped out. The last time I went, I fell and broke my wrist.
Wish I could remember the name of the place. It was a franchise, I do remember that, so they were in more than one place.
I also remember getting a special cast that I could go swimming in – which I did.
Ft Note: He was just informed that he has qualified for Worlds in his division and his registration will be comped. I am so happy for him.
That’s awesome about your son, Michael! Congratulations to him!
fireandrain- I SO remember the vibrating belts! Those were The Bomb at the time!
I had to hide a couple of friends on facebook who are seriously into body building and competing. I respect what they do, but I was tired of the selfies with the flexed muscles and not much clothes on and all the discussion about macros and calories. It’s a different world.
Most definitely, MichaelNKat! Sacrifices and dedication produce some truly admirable feats. Some of my friends have tried body building, although I don’t have any girl friends that are into lifting as I am. Body builders put in consistent time and effort.
Throughout adjusting my macros and trying different ratios, I’ve learned I have zero self-restraint when it comes to food that tastes good. If my mind is set on having a chocolate bar, I’m going to fit a chocolate bar some way or another into my macros. It’s quite sad, but I’m more proud of myself of realizing that and accepting it. If I want cheesecake, I’m going to eat some cheesecake. No need in depriving myself, so I’ve gotten better at moderation…and bargaining.
Personally, I workout and feel best on a low-ish carb diet (30g-50g a day). I don’t have any rices, breads, crackers, and calorie dense foods. I stick to meats, eggs, and veggies, especially if I’m on a cut or a bulk. At maintenance, I’ll usually have a dinner that includes pasta and a lot of veggies, adjusting my macros as fit. It doesn’t work for everyone, but through trial and error I get the best results that way and have less carb related mood swings. Honestly, getting to lower my carbs was the hardest thing to do.
One thing that I’ve been happy to see is less women being afraid to lift weights because they’ll get “bulky”. Women should be lifting weights. Period. I’m happy there’s a better understanding on what truly makes a woman “bulk” up and how to tailor your diet and fitness to garner the results you want.
I love lifting weights, seriously. I do so three times a week with a trainer. I can tell the difference – today I took a 2 hour bike ride and I can just tell how strong my quads are. I still have some upper-arm mush from being of European peasant stock
but my shoulders and biceps and triceps are more defined so I feel I can wear sleeveless, which I never used to do.
Michael, that is so cool!! Congrats to your son.
LOL, I am not even going to touch that bodybuilding stuff. I saw a pretty good show about female bodybuilders on TV awhile ago. I have huge respect for that kind of discipline. I did buy green beans and chicken today, but those items will be turned into tasty, flavorful dishes to be enjoyed for dinner.
Michael - again congrats on your son. Where can I find more info on the sport? How did he get involved in it?
Pizzagirl, if my European peasant stock mush could be turned into nice looking arms, there is hope for yours! I had pretty nasty flaps and ailerons a while ago. Now, I am not sure if I will be cleared for takeoff.
My cycling training partner who just won the Nationals used to be a ranked body builder. She trained me during the time she was competing (22 years ago, lol) and I remember well just how structured her life needed to be to be competitive and successful. And now that she’s a National Champion, I get to be her domestique on the bike and pull her up all the hills
.
Thanks Ohio. I don’t really know how he stumbled onto BJJ and his school in particular. I was involved with martial arts for many years (various forms of Karate) and fought in both points and full contact matches. So he had exposure to martial arts from an early age but was never particularly interested in Karate. BJJ really clicked with him. Here’s a link to the school where he trains.

There’s a lot of info on what BJJ is all about. My son is featured in a blog on the home page. In addition to his BJJ training, he does extensive heavy strength training based on 5x5 programing and also does Insanity for cardio several days per week. His eating program is very structured, particularly as a fight approaches and he needs to make weight. Nothing but protein and vegetables!
I don’t see the link.
I forgot to post it, lol. Just fixed that!
I think my cold is FINALLY leaving the premises - bout time!
3 mile run last night - which was plenty since I still have a little rattling in my chest.
Today will be a high steps day hopefully - long pup walk this morning, a trip to Ikea planned for the day with D2 and her roommate shopping for sophomore year and cutting the grass later today. I"m just so grateful to be feeling better!
