Sabaray, I have an older pair of the less modest version (yeah, last summer was brutal!), and I bought an 8 instead of my regular 6, because I wanted to have more room for my bloated from the constant water drinking and the heat belly. Go for them! Now, the most important decision: which “colour” to buy!
Heat belly! I like that! Now I have an excuse!
DaVinci Board and a Pilates in the can.
Ok ladies. Gentlemen look away
I’m 51. You know the drill. Certain things appear to have stopped. Anyway, I am finding that in the past week, whenever I exercise, the sweat just pours from my forehead and crown of my head - well beyond the amount of sweat that I “should” have based on the exertion. Seriously, it is so distracting that I fantasize about plunging my head into a bucket of ice water - and miss the cues of the instructor! Drinking cold water helps some - but I can’t drink too much otherwise my stomach sloshes and that isn’t good either. I’m wearing a sweatband holding my hair back in addition to a ponytail. It’s not happening in non-exercise situations.
Any clever hacks other than exercising in a commercial freezer? (I don’t want this to discuss how to handle the issue in general - just hacks to deal with when exercising.)
Yup, heat belly is my summer problem. I swear I swell around my midriff when it is hot outside, and it is not from earing. Last summer was brutal here, so I feel your pain. This summer, the weather in the PNW is much, much cooler and runner-friendly, but I have to deal with the dagnabbit hip. Life is not fair.
They have liners, right? (Hotty Hot) Yeah- maybe go up a size. Also consider the Oiselle Roga long shorts. My daughter has bigger quads and is thrilled with them and said they aren’t as long as they look online. She said they are perfect. The waist band of the Roga is really smooth, wide and nice- very forgiving.
Pizzagirl- it might be a reaction to the increased humidity- even inside. I think we women “of a certain age” are more sensitive to that. I used to take a VERY cold water bottle (filled with ice) with me to hot yoga or spin. I would put it on my face and neck during breaks.
I have the long Rogas and I hate them. I like the waistband, but the length is just very awkward on me.
I got a couple of pairs of the really short ones. They are REALLY short. I mainly use them for my treadmill, although I did go out in them this morning.
Pizzagirl, maybe one of these towels could help?

It is supposed to stay cool as water evaporates from it in a controlled manner.
Frogg Toggs makes several awesome products - I have a towel from them that I love (similar to Enduracool, which I have also seen at Target) but it looks like they also have headbands, wristbands, etc. that might be good to wear while exercising at Pilates, etc.
I too wondered if the sweating might just be a temporary thing due to the extreme heat/humidity the midwest has been having. Maybe bring a cool wet washcloth in a ziplock bag with you to class and keep it out and nearby to wipe off?
260.2 this morning. So close to being under 260. I should be there tomorrow. :D/
I’m feeling really good today- no longer sore from my long walk on Sunday. I’m going to a concert tomorrow but I want to go to another art fair today. But then I’ll probably be sore tomorrow if I do that. Decisions, decisions!
Pretty cool, Romani.
Your post reminded me of what a friend of one of my acquaintances did while trying to lose weight: every week when a certain number of pounds came off according to the weigh-in at the end if the week, an object of the same weight was placed into a backpack. After a few months, that backpack became verrrrry heavy. It worked as a motivational tool of sorts by reminding how much weight the person used to carry around 24/7. If the person gained N pounds, N pounds came out of the backpack and was placed in a basket next to it. Then the game was on to get that object back into the backpack.
Oh that’s a cool idea. I can definitely already feel the difference that almost 10 lb less makes.
That would absolutely be motivational for me. Guess Mr R has a new project
Can’t remember if I mentioned last week that I’d done the first run of a trail running/racing series in Portland’s Forest Park (it’s five Wednesday nights)? Of course I tripped and fell and ended up bruised (but not at all broken), then overdid it all weekend at a dog agility trial (6 runs/day ==> 23K steps/day), and today is the first day I feel myself again, and I have another trail run/race tonight. And this one is 6.5 miles, long for me–and about 1000 feet of elevation gain/loss… feeling slightly panicky but I will be fine. The good news/bad news about the series is that I’m the only one in my age group, so I won my age group last week (my daughter reminds me that I was also last in my age group)–but I’m also the oldest person participating, which is a bit intimidating. However, I was NOT DFL last week, and I’m determined not to be DFL this week.
I signed up because I’ve been feeling intimidated at the prospect of running trails that aren’t my “home trails” – the ones in the park next to our house – but I do enjoy trail runs. Forest Park has many many miles of lovely trails, and this group runs a really good series–they have a sweeper, check off every runner as they finish, and wait for the last people to finish, no matter how late it is.
Ohio- my son’s vote was for Flagstaff.
Good luck with the race tonight, dmd! I think it’s great that you are challenging yourself this way. Also very cool to be the oldest person participating!
DMD - I think I know what DFL means!
Good luck tonight. No need to tell anyone you are the only one in your age group! P
Let’s put it this way: you OWN the group, dmd.
Run fast, and don’t trip on the trail! Be safe and have fun.
Go DMD!!! Yes, have fun.
Good luck, dmd!
