Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

So in the other thread we are talking about DNA testing for both ancestry and health. @BunsenBurner, you will appreciate this given your knowledge: Through Promethease (another service that augments the learning from 23andme), I found out that I have this (gene? allele? not sure I can articulate the difference) …

Better performing muscles. Likely sprinter. This genotype indicates better performing muscles, particularly for sprinting and power sports. Fast-twitch muscle fibers are able to produce alpha-actinin-3. Professional sprinters usually have this, although it is less common for endurance athletes.*

I’m not remotely a professional sprinter, but this makes perfect sense, because I’m more “explosive” than I am endurance, and every trainer I’ve ever had has articulated that idea in one way or another. I thought it was pretty cool!

MoWC is right. PG, you have great arms!

I did a four mile run outside run today. I was slow and my HR was high. I just wanted it to be over because of the temperature, humidity, and the sun beating down on me. I need to wake up earlier!

Edit to add note: Based on a friend’s recipe recommendation, I made oven baked onion rings tonight for a dinner side that were pretty good. I sliced three onions into thick rounds, dipped the rounds/rings in flour, then a beaten egg; the wet rounds were placed on an oiled baking sheet, then covered lightly with a seasoned panko blend, and sprayed lightly with olive oil. The onion rounds baked for about 25 minutes at 400. Voila, kind of deconstructed onion rings minus the deep frying hassle.

Yum!!! Those sound awesome. I will have to try them.

Those do sound good!

Huge thunderstorms just moved through and thunderstorm predicted for early morning, so running will have to wait for after work which means an afternoon run on Thursday - too hard to do the higher intensity almost back to back. I have Pilates with my trainer in the morning which I am looking forward to.

Bunsen, I was just thinking about you as I wandered around my living room to get to 20,000 steps for the day. I also wanted to report I’ve been wearing the long Hotty Hot short and I love them. Super comfy - lower waistband is not a problem. Plenty of room in the legs. Highly recommended.

That sounds really good, PlantMom!

I didn’t make my 6000 steps over my running steps today due to unavoidable butt planting at work. Missed by 500 steps, which I’m not interested in doing right now!

500 - so close! All is forgiven.

A litltle bug juice with that run abasket? Yuck. Tonight’s run was enhanced by what seemed like a constant stream of nats or something in my eyes, ears, mouth and hair - totally gross. I broke no records in distance but sweated a lot and maybe ingested a little bug protein.

Ah, onion rings, I could eat them in prodigious quantities once upon a time. I still succumb once in a while for vidalias. Plantmom, your recipe could lead me astray!

I am stuffing my face in anticipation of the tomorrow’s restricted calorie day… and decompressing after quite a ride of the last 24 hours. I think I need to start a new thread about the dangers of BC pills in certain populations.

In the mean time, enjoy!

202 reviewers giving it 5 stars can’t be wrong, can they?

Hope you got plenty to eat yesterday, Bunsen! And I can say without a doubt the yoga contraption would not end well for me.

That Amazon yoga inversion product actually reminded me a bit of the wall yoga I did at Woodloch Lodge fitness spa in the Poconos. Imagine a wall that has slots into which you can lock slings and straps to do a combination of dispersion training and yoga. The best movement was at the end when we hung upside down by a sling placed at our hips, knees akimbo to provide secure support. I felt like Spider-Man hanging from his webbing, lol. It was actually a lot of fun and an interesting melding of disciplines.

I hate autocorrect. ^ suspension training, not dispersion training, lol.

That kind of just looks like a TRX to me – no?

There is a studio near me that does that kind of thing – here are the types of classes they offer. http://www.risinggoddessfitness.com/adults/

I tried the Aerial Hammock with a Groupon - interesting to do once but you spent so much time futzing with the fabric that I didn’t think it was a great workout. I’m all about gimmicks to keep me motivated and interested but it was even too gimmicky for me.

Knee still kind of cranky so I think I’ll either bike or walk this week. Going to enter a maintenance phase with my McMillan training run club schedule. I am going to do another triathlon in 2 weeks but it substitutes swimming with kayaking. The run club that I’m an unofficial member of is putting this on. 4 mile kayaking/5 mile run/10 mile bike. This is supposed to be a “fun” event but 2 of the guys are top ranked nationally in their age groups. Plus other uber competitive men/women so we’ll see how “fun” it is. I’d like to train with them but it is the 5:30 am group. Going to try and alter my routine.

I had to move my daughter from one apt to another apt at Ohio State after Sunday’s tri. Would rather run 3 triathlons. I was thinking I would have had a tough time doing that 5 years ago, during my couch potato days. Still I’m trying to determine what age you have to be to retire from “moving”.

My daughter was a good runner in HS and my triathlon has kind of piqued her interest in running again. She said it is hard for to run unless their is something to compete for. I think she’s going to sign up for a 5k. We both are wired the same in that we need some sort of race to go out and run. I think for me, it would be hard to work out if there wasn’t a goal.

Ha! I have two moves coming up – this Friday I am helping my son move out of his apartment, and then 2 weeks from now I am helping my daughter move into her new place. S’s apartment is ground floor, but D is moving from a garden apt to a 3rd floor walk-up, so look for some potential quads-of-steel action!

What a dad Ohio! At least you weren’t doing it with 50,000 other OSU residents later in August!

Ohio, my husband just retired from moving assistant a few years ago. Moving is hard work!

Didn’t run this morning and it’s a good thing because I had the world’s toughest Pilates workout. Used the chair for footwork, armwork, pelvic curls, ab work and pikes. Stretches, tricep work and back extensions on the Reformer. I am ordering a massage stick today to take with me next week. I have a quick 45 minute PLYO workout for today that I will do after work.

Ohio, I don’t think the moving ever ends, lol. When my daughter was 25 (2 years ago), my wife and I and her now fiancee’s parents helped both “kids” move their stuff into an apartment they got together. Even though a mover was used for the big stuff, there was a ton of boxes of fragiles, clothing and small furniture we took. Now, I’m helping my 88 year old parents move stuff from their house to an apartment in a retirement community. That’s been a multi month project. I can’t remember ever relying on my parents to move me, even into college dorms. Talk about functional exercising :).

We will do our moving duties later this month at college move in for sophomore D! My H is distraught that S won’t be able to come help this year!

I’m starting to think about getting a race on the calendar for fall. Racing is really not my favorite “thing”… But, this made me think that some of “us” have events coming up soon - if you’re willing to share, post when your “next big event” is scheduled so that I/we can have a frame of mind for cheering you on!
