Happy run-iversary, abasket!!!
abasket, doesn’t feel good to look back, remember where you started and realize how much you’ve accomplished! Happy Run-versary :).
Just for BB! http://www.athleticsweekly.com/featured/mary-decker-slaney-runs-again-50805#YfADq0i52u67oBiU.01
Mary Decker fascinates me.
Thanks for sharing that Deb. I hadn’t thought about Mary Decker Slaney in years.
Happy Runaversay, abasket!
It is my 2 year yogaversary this weekend.
Hope all are ok with the dangerous storms. Please check in if you can.
Ran 2.7 this AM and was happy that at least for the first mile I am almost at my previous pace (not that it is fast
).
It was humid but cooler with a hint of fall in the air. Going for my final chest xray this AM.
Happy yogavirsary, Fall Girl! I hope your xray is fine!
IT HAPPENED! It was 63 degrees and much less humid. I actually wore a thin t-shirt to run this morning.
Last night’s 5K went well, I had a pretty good time and it was a nice course with good weather. This morning was a good 3.3 mile run with Back on My Feet - it was cool and breezy, what a change from previous weeks! Tomorrow morning will be a long run and then we will head out for the first home football game of the season. Our team is so bad that long ago the games became way more about the tailgate and watching the marching band than the actual football. I really enjoyed the years that our daughter was in the marching band - it was fun to watch their shows and we always fed the saxaphone section. Those were fun kids and good times!
abasket - congratulations on your runiversary! I think it’s great that you’re starting the 5K-10K program!
FallGirl - congrats on your yogaversary! I am surprised that it is your 2 year anniversary - you seem so accomplished at it that I thought you have been doing it for years. Maybe there is hope for me to give it a try this late in life!
I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend! Safe travels to all who will be hitting the road.
C3 - I was terrible at yoga when I started. Was not nearly as flexible as I thought I was and my arm and core strength as well as balance were very lacking. With my lack of coordination it took awhile to learn the flow. What helped was going on a regular basis ( 3x/week). That commitment made a huge difference. One of the fitness lessions I have learned.
^^ There ya go!!! Yes, last night I was like “wow, I don’t HAVE TO choose a tank top tonight!!” 57 here this morning earlier - warming up to a PERFECT 75. Yeah, September! (although 90 again next week!)
Speaking of the “anniversaries”, if I remember correctly we have a few September birthdays here - happy birthday month to the September babies - I was/am one of them! - we will be celebrating my mom’s 83rd tonight with a bash at my house. She is herself a living example of D/E/W and the quality of life it can bring to you. 83 and still working part time at her local YMCA, swims laps (albeit slow she says!) several times a week and goes out walking twice a day. Still cuts her grass sometimes, though we YELL at her for it!
Happy Birthday to all of our September birthday folks.
Kudos to your mom, abasket. Wish her a happy 83rd from me.
Mine is Sept 12! Happy Birthday to the rest of us September folks. My father would have been 91 today but he made it just past 90!
I have a houseguest for 6 weeks (she’s waiting to get into an apartment that isn’t available yet) and it’s scaring the cr$p out of me. She’s turning 72 (so, basically, my hustand’s age) and is in terrible condition all the way around. She is a lovely person, but has huge limitations on what she can do physically. She’s had serious back problems for years with multiple surgeries, and 2 years ago had a major fusion of most of her spine. So- she can’t bend easily. She still has pain, and is on a regimen of pain pills. She doesn’t abuse them, but they are the controlled ones that are in the news right now (Oxy…). She has NO energy, because she can’t really do anything. Going out for a few errands wears her out. She reclines in the lounge chair most of the day when she isn’t working (she’s a realtor, but has no real business right now) and watches political news shows. I know it is hard for her to be active at all, but I honestly feel that if she would do SOMETHING (walk at 2 mph pace on my treadmill or go to a water class for seniors) that she would have more energy and feel better. She fixes food and does normal errands, but comparing her life to mine just scares me. I don’t think I could live like that. I don’t think she understands that she would feel better if she could manage some activity- at first she would feel exhausted, but it would get better.
And mine the day before MOWC - and it is on a weekend! I can’t think of the last time that happened. Mr. Sabaray’s birthday is the day before mine (albeit separated by several years).
Pilates this morning - it’s finally cooler and of course I’m indoors! I’ve been doing Pilates for close to two years, about a year and a half with my current trainer. Really working on stretching my left hamstring - it’s quite a bit tighter than my right.
@abasket, happy birthday to your mom! I bet that will be a really fun party.
I agree MOWC - that is scary. I fully intend to be one of those 90 year olds who are completing half marathons (albeit slowly!) like a woman who is a beloved figure here in SD (but she does FULL marathons). I worry about my DH. He too has back problems, is in pain a lot of the time, & that removes most of his motivation to exercise. He’s not particularly interested in healthy eating. There is nothing I can tell him that he doesn’t already know though - it’s up to him if he wants to make changes. He is a happy person & I want him around as long as possible.
My 78 year old mother walks every morning with her dogs & works in her yard a lot. However, she doesn’t do much to exercise her mind - no hobbies or real interests other than those above, no real friendships. She struggles with depression and some other mental health issues, has poor relationships with most of the family due to a bitter, angry attitude, She seems to exist crisis to crisis (health, financial, etc.) This is my nightmare.
MOWC, you will be tested to observe this friend over the next few weeks for sure. It’s difficult to see this AND to imagine having to deal with it personally. Maybe you and your H will inspire her just a bit! You’re very kind to house her for that period of time.
I think my mom still works, exercises - because those have always been her hobbies. She doesn’t have much else - or interest in much else besides spending time with family and there aren’t a lot of us close by. So winters are very hard. Too much time indoors in front of the tube. I think this is why she is afraid to quit working. Her work people are her second family.
Gertrude - I am in the same situation as you regarding a spouse who isn’t interested in fitness/ healthy habits. Not much I can do but very frustrating. I try to remind him of the fun we had when we used to walk/hike/bike together.
I have seen a huge difference in older family members- the ones who are physically, mentally and socially active have a much better quality of life. That’s what I am striving for.
Funny, many of us are in that same spouse boat I think. My H is at the fitness center right now - he mostly goes to chat and to get his insurance reimbursement for wellness. Sometimes he just goes and takes a shower! Ticks me off! He is one to putter outside but organized exercise - not a lot. I swear my retirement present for him sometime in the next year will be a Fitbit! Not sure how excited he’d be about that though!
I am a huge believer in the power of a daily walk for mental and physical health. Part of this is based on family history. My older brother (age 86) and sister (84) walk every day–and take no drugs, amazingly. They are both fully compos mentis, as well. (My nearer-in-age sisters are also walkers (as I am, in addition to my running) and I see what an effect that has, too.)
This is purely a vent: I have a friend who has migraines. Bad ones. Has had them for years. Takes serious drugs for them. Is overweight. Has two dogs, which she exercises by throwing balls off her porch. Constantly complains “I wish I could manage a walk but I just can’t”–but she literally never tries. I’ve suggested walking with her (I’ll slow walk with anyone if they ask) but “it’s impossible.” OTOH, I have another friend, also two dogs. Shattered her ankle about three months ago. I’m slow walking with her now (and managing her dogs’ leashes for her while we do it) twice a week. It’s important to her, and I can see how hard it is for her, but she’s doing it.
I had really hoped when planning our trip that it would be the kick in the rear H needed to start dieting and exercising, just living more healthfully. Unfortunately it was not to be. There was a lot we couldn’t do because of his physical limitations. I don’t see things improving, unfortunately. What is interesting is that quite a few of the women I know (and run with) fill their spare time with physical activity - and the vast majority of us have very overweight, unhealthy spouses. That would be a study, wouldn’t it?
We have a family friend in his late 80s who still goes for long bike rides throughout various countries. He is our inspiration.
I’m here in Barcelona for the night. Thanks for the safe travel wishes. We made it out before the nastiest storm bands charged through. Apparently lots of damage in our area so our fingers are crossed our house is okay. H and I spent long hours in the airport in DC yesterday walking up and down the C-D terminals. Fortunately, like Pizzagirl, we snagged very last minute upgrades to business/first with the lie flat seats. We arrived this morning and spent a good part of the day exploring the old city. Beautiful in that unique Southern European, old Roman, Mediterranean way. I’ve gotta say though, it is WARM! Over 90. Good thing we’re hardened Floridians. The husband is now taking a very long nap but I feel okay. I thank you fitness buddies for keeping me honest and able to chug along.
Happy anniversaries to you runner yoga people (abasket, FG), and anticipated birthday folks (MoWC’ sabaray). Sending you some luck, romani).
Internet’s going to be limited and for some reason my last mites att cell plan is NOT working. Grrrr. Just know I’ll be walking, walking, walking
