You all are making me feel so lucky! DH is a cyclist and very fit. He thinks my running is great, and wants me to bike more with him (as in, let’s go to Europe and bike 50 miles a day)… Besides that, he eats whatever I cook, and mostly says he likes it. Sometimes he says he likes things a lot and would I make them again, but that’s as far as he goes.
Our weather has shifted from cool nights and hot afternoons to cooler nights and gray cool days. I’m enjoying the running but it was hard to persuade myself to swim yesterday! The dogs love this weather, though.
My husband and I met in the late 70s when we were both on our employer’s national running team. (Texas Instruments) We probably wouldn’t have met through our work. As he aged, he switched over to much more cycling but runs in the winter when the weather is too cold for him to want to cycle outdoors. We both did triathlon for awhile, including one on the dreaded tandem bike. He’s still very active and fit, and we do really appreciate that about each other. We get tired, though- very tired. Sometimes I wonder if we didn’t train so much for our sports would we be more energetic for going out in the evenings!
Gertrude, your mother sounds eerily like my mother, except she didn’t have dogs to walk. (She’s dead, now.)
I had a wonderful 1.5 mile swim this morning and then did weights. Yesterday, thanks to thunderstorms, I had to run on the treadmill at the gym. This is when I saw the most jaw-dropping outfit I’ve ever seen in a gym. College-age guy, on the rower, in a loud blue-and-yellow plaid one-piece jumpsuit that was skintight. I actually took a photo I was so taken aback by this.
I just did a google image search to see if this was a thing, and it doesn’t come up. Don’t know where this guy found this outfit. If anyone wants to see it for a laugh, just PM me (just got a back view).
I am blessed with a life partner who likes to stay active. He is totally onboard with the “eat healthy” stuff, too. He actually keeps me in check - would not let me bake. My only issue is that he eats too much fruit!!! 6-7 pieces a day or even more is not uncommon. He thinks my couple of apples and a bowl of berries in the morning is too little. Other than that, we are both on the same page when it comes to food.
I am proud that my wife is up to walking 6-7 miles per day. I’m trying to get her do more occasional bursts of speed during her walks and she seems to have adopted doing that as well. When I go with her I’m dragging the last hour!
She has always had a healthy diet and has helped me adopt healthy eating habits. I’m also grateful that she is supportive of my training and the time commitment. I think she’s noticed that I like myself more (and probably a better person)the past 5 years since I’ve rediscovered my desire to compete again. Happy husband…Happy life! Right?!
Looking forward to men and women’s 5th ave mile tomorrow. The field includes past and current Olympians. Centrowitz, Murphy, manzano, Blankenship. Simpson, coburn, grace and more. They also have age group runs and based on last year’s times a medal might be doable next year in the age 60 category. Wonder if the age group runners get to mix with the elites?!
Walk today–3,5 miles to beach and back. Mellow yoga tomorrow. Weatherman says Hermine will bring heavy rains and 50-60 mph winds to MA coast starting on Sunday. Looks like I will be exercising inside for the rest of the weekend.
On fitness and aging–I am convinced a fitness program helps keep one feeling younger and definitely stronger. Tao Porchon Lynch is a yoga teacher who I have heard at Kripalu and at the Nantucket Yoga festival. The woman is 98 and still practices and lectures around the country. She is still in flexible and looks pretty good.
Another September birthday here. 63 on the 22nd. Planning out my fitness goals for the next year and how to achieve them. A 12 ft high climbing wall in the back yard perhaps as a birthday gift to myself? Will no doubt drive my wife (who will be 63 on the 23rd) insane.
Yay me! Gorgeous morning (finally) for 9 miles. 64-71 degrees while I ran with lower humidity and a slight breeze. Had 8 on the schedule but 9 was better. I have a 5K on Monday so I can run very short tomorrow and still make my week. I didn’t look at my splits and tried to keep it easy (which didn’t really work since the last few miles felt hard) and did a 10:37 pace. That is faster than my longer runs should be, but since it was cooler I don’t feel trashed.
“Sabaray - just fyi - I received my credit card reverse charge for my returned Garmin. Looked on my credit card website and saw that it went through.”
That is good. Sounds like these Garmins can have a lot of problems. Mine freezes up every time I use it, when I save my run. You can’t even turn it off, and the only thing you can do is let it run the battery down. It’s very aggravating, but the next time it happens, I’m going to take it back to REI and see if I can get another. Though I don’t have the receipt, it’s within the year, and they are very good about returns, and keep records of purchases.
" Beautiful in that unique Southern European, old Roman, Mediterranean way. I’ve gotta say though, it is WARM! Over 90. Good thing we’re hardened Floridians. The husband is now taking a very long nap but I feel okay. I thank you fitness buddies for keeping me honest and able to chug along."
Ahhhhh! So jealous, @PlantMom. If you can manage to get some exercise in that heat, good for you. If not, a glass or two of red wine might be substituted. You know, I find that taking long, fast walks in Europe, with all those stairs and so many beautiful things to look at, is awesome exercise. There are so many stairs everywhere, and you can just walk for miles, no need to run, just enjoy and burn calories. You are so lucky!
Fingers crossed- My husband and I (both kids, too, come to think of it) have been using all sorts of Garmins for well over a decade and have had very few issues- just some minor problems with aging devices. I like Garmin technology a lot.
